STJ – It doesn't make me feel any better that we aren't the worst.  This government – executive, and legislative branches have acted irresponsibly for years.  When Clinton left office we were in good shape.  Unfortunately, we had 9-11 which created a whole new layer of expense to protect this country.  Then we had George W. getting us into a war in IRAQ which wasted billions, and for what ?  I think it might have been to satisfy his father who didn't go in and clean them out after the Kuwait invasion.  Later, we decided that we needed to move into Afghanistan for a war, even tho the Russians proved in the 1980s that there is no way to win a war over there.  We were trying to protect and unite a bunch of warlords who only cared about their poppy crops.  They cared nothing about democracy and national unity.

Next we have layered on entitlements up the wazoo so that each year most of our budget is already spent before Jan 1.

Personally, I think the answer is  higher taxes on the rich, and as shadowfax says on corporations. Also mandatory cutbacks until we balance the budget.  People will feel the pain, but what's the alternative ?  Bury out heads in the sand ?

We also need a higher minimum wage.  Don't the Republicans know that if we allow lower wage earners to make  more money, more money goes into the economy to buy the goods and services that our corporations produce ?  This money is not saved for the most part, it's spent.  Don't forget the multiplier effect of money.

What a mess.  OMG, I'm starting to sound like a Democrat, except for the part of getting a grip on entitlements !
