Earlier today, when commenting on the latest global criminal scandal, that of “rampant corruption” at FIFA, we – jokingly – said: “And now we just sit back and wait to see how many of the defendants sent “donations” to the Clinton Foundation and how many speeches Hillary and/or Bill gave at the Baur au Lac in the past two decades.”

Then we decided to make sure the joke wouldn’t be on us and that FIFA hadn’t indeed donated to the Clinton foundation.

The joke was on us… because not only did FIFA donate to the Clinton Foundation

Adding the following:

FIFA Joins Clinton Global Initiative CGI

In response to the invitation to join the Clinton Global Initiative, FIFA has announced their three Commitments to Action ahead of the meeting of the group scheduled for later this week in New York

The CGI represents a partnership between the private sector, non-governmental organisations and other global leaders who seek solutions for the world’s most significant issues including poverty relief, education, environmental assistance and healthcare.

CGI was founded in 2005 by former US President Bill Clinton.

The following are FIFA’s Commitments to Action that will be announced at the annual meeting:

  • 20 Centres for 2010: The twenty Football for Hope Centres will be built across Africa.
  • 1 Goal: “Education for All”: A pledge to sign up 30 million people to support universal education through the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.
  • Sports for Youth Development programme – this initiative plans to use football as a vehicle for social development in Latin America and the Caribbean

FIFA’s Secretary General, Jérôme Valcke, said of FIFA’s role in humanitarian work

Our mission as world football’s governing body is to develop the game all around the world and to use the power of football for positive social change”.

… Not to mention engage in massive corruption on a global scale.

As well as this:

FIFA has participated in the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting, which took place in New York from 21 to 23 September.

The Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting is a premier gathering for heads of state, business executives, and leaders of the non-profit sector from around the world, and this year it took place in New York City, with FIFA represented.

“CGI members come from 90 different countries, speak many languages, work in all sectors, and approach problems in unique ways,” President Clinton said. “But together, their desire and capacity to build a better world for our children and grandchildren has resulted in 1,946 commitments, valued at $63 billion, which have already improved nearly 300 million lives.”

Around the same time last year, at the 2009 CGI Annual Meeting, which was also held in the Big Apple, FIFA made three commitments to the world and was present again this year at the meeting to show that the world governing body has kept its word.

One of the main projects announced last year was the ‘20 Centers for 2010’ programme, which was a grand plan to build 20 community centres across Africa over the coming years. A progress report on the centres was given to the CGI participants at one of yesterday’s plenary sessions.

“FIFA is proud to be at the CGI Annual Meeting for the second time and to provide an update on the Football for Hope Centres in Africa as well as to participate in a new commitment in cooperation with the Inter-American Development Bank,” said Federico Addiechi, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at FIFA.

… but so did the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, responsible for organizing and winning the 2022 World Cup, a world cup hosting which was also contested by the United States:

And from the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee:

Commitment by Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee

In 2013, The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee (Q22), in partnership with the Qatar National Food Security Programme (QNFSP), committed to utilizing its research and development for sustainable infrastructure at the 2022 FIFA World Cup to improve food security in Qatar, the Middle East, and other arid and water-stressed regions throughout the world. Q22 and QNFSP will build on their carbon-neutral stadium prototype, successfully built in 2010, that can be cooled in the environmental conditions of the Middle East with sustainable technology. Through this commitment they seek to prove the effectiveness and affordability of using both solar-powered hybrid cooling applications and converted football training facilities as housing for high-efficiency greenhouse food production in humid climates. If successful, the application of this innovative technology will allow for year-round food production and will enable farmers to increase the quality, consistency, and productivity of crops while decreasing the amount of water and energy consumed by agricultural production.

As a reminder, the reason why in addition to the DOJ indictment, the Swiss opened a criminal probe into alleged graft linked to the to the 2010 award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar. Perhaps the Swiss should have a chat with Hillary: she may be able to provide them with some “clues” on just how the decision was made.

Because what better way to mask pervasive global, criminal corruption than to “hide” it in plain view and to dress it in the most noble of causes?
