Warren Buffett

In 2009, shortly after investment advisor Daniel Pecaut had mailed out his bi-annual newsletter covering the best insights and information from the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meetings, one of the newsletters was returned to him. On the back was a handwritten note from Warren Buffett.

Pecaut was thrilled. The Oracle of Omaha had been reading his newsletter!

Mr. Pecaut and his partner, Corey Wrenn, had been attending Berkshire Hathaway’s shareholders meetings for decades where they feverishly took notes, and studied Buffett’s mindset, strategies and investing insights. After his first two meetings, Mr. Pecaut began sharing his notes and insights with his clients and investment luminaries via his firm’s newsletter.

Three decades later, those newsletters have now been organized into a new book: UNIVERSITY OF BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY. The investment insights in this book unfold as a journey. Readers will be quickly be swept up by the highlight reel of what has been a fascinating, informative, and often hilarious ride through 30 years of the Warren and Charlie show. You will see how Buffett and Munger responded to their own mistakes and faced challenges as the world changed around them.

UNIVERSITY OF BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY provides an invaluable resource for investors;

•    It reveals the results of Berkshire Hathaway’s genius at identifying and evaluating the intangibles of companies to invest in successful investing. The key to their value investing approach is finding and recognizing the ideal situation for a value investor, which is to find companies increasing their intrinsic value with a declining stock price.

•    Although their principles are simple and clear, Berkshire Hathaway’s investment strategy is an inexact science. Mastery comes from seeing the success AND failures of these principles being applied over time. The book provides investors with hindsight—three decades worth, showing how Berkshire Hathaway figured it out as they went.

•    You’ll see how Berkshire Hathaway applies the same timeless principles to vastly changing landscapes and circumstances (i.e., the internet, the demise of newspapers, booms and busts, and so on).

•    As value investors themselves, Corey Wrenn and  Daniel Pecaut’s critical assessment of the meetings often go beyond the surface to address what was unsaid, inferred, or implied.

•    Heeding Warren Buffett’s advice that smaller and individual investors need to act on Berkshire Hathaway’s principles of investing differently. Because of Berkshire Hathaway’s size, smaller and individual investors need to apply these principles differently. There are many timeless lessons any investor can apply to improve their own portfolio.

•    Corey Wrenn & Daniel Pecaut’s critical assessment of the meetings, often addressing what was unsaid, inferred, or implied.

UNIVERSITY OF BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY is a three-decade, year-by-year analysis of history unfolding. Readers will be able to view Buffett and Munger’s decision- making process from a unique vantage point: a collection of insights about what went on beneath the surface of those decisions over time.
