Penn Gaming joins casino-movers – put options in action

www.interactivebrokers.com

Today’s tickers: PENN, CIT, EXPE, RF, XRT, FITB, UNH, UNG & MU

PENN – Shares of the gaming and racing company have lifted 8% to $30.79 amid gains experienced by a number of casino operators today. PENN edged onto our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner after one investor initiated a put spread in the October contract. The spread was established through the purchase of 6,550 puts at the October 25 strike price for 2.02 each against the sale of 6,550 puts at the lower October 20 strike for a premium of 79 cents. The net cost of the transaction amounts to 1.23 and yields a maximum potential profit of 3.77 if shares declined to $20.00 by expiration. Such a trade could represent downside protection by an individual who is long the stock. Or, it could potentially represent a medium-term bearish position by a trader hoping to profit in the event of a 22% decline in shares through the breakeven point at $23.77 by expiration. – Penn National Gaming, Inc.

CIT – The bank holding company’s shares have rallied nearly 7% to $3.38 today, attracting some bullish option players seeking to benefit from further gains in the stock. Call-volume at the near-term June 5.0 strike price ballooned upward by more than 48,000 as investors purchased at least 37,200 contracts for an average premium of 23 cents each. The calls will begin to yield profits to investors if the underlying shares can increase 55% from the current price and surpass the breakeven point at $5.23 by expiration. Optimism spread to the July 5.0 strike where 5,500 calls were coveted for 40 cents apiece. Finally, the October 5.0 strike attracted some bullish action as well as some 2,000 calls appear to have been bought for 65 cents per contract. Option implied volatility climbed as high as 192% during the trading day up from Friday’s closing value of 151%. – CIT Group, Inc.

EXPE– Shares of the online travel company have climbed more than 6% to $15.88 amid renewed takeover chatter reported by one source. Option traders on EXPE have braced themselves for bullish movement in the stock as some 2,300 calls were purchased at the near-term June 17.5 strike price for an average premium of 35 cents per contract. In order to profit from a long-call position by expiration shares of Expedia must double today’s rally in order to breach the…

Financials continue to rally

www.interactivebrokers.com

Today’s tickers: CIT, CSCO, AMX, STI, XTO, NTES & MCHP

CIT CIT Group, Inc. – Shares of the North American bank holding company has jumped more than 10% to $3.01 amid the broad gains enjoyed by the financial sector today. CIT appeared on our ‘most active by options volume’ market scanner after one investor initiated a reversal on the stock. The trader sold 21,200 calls at the in-the-money October 2.5 strike price for 1.15 and then purchased 21,200 puts at the same strike price for 40 cents each. Perhaps the investor is looking to bank gains on today’s rally and protect the profits by getting long of puts. The trade resulted in a credit of 75 cents to the individual who is prepared to gain to the downside at any share price below $2.50 by expiration in October.

CSCO Cisco Systems, Inc. – The networking and communications products company is off slightly by about 2% to $19.26. However, we observed bullish option traders looking for a rise in shares by expiration this month. At the May 20 strike price more than 18,900 calls were picked up for an average premium of 40 cents apiece. The breakeven on the trade at $20.40 requires that shares rise by just 6% from the current price in order for call-buyers to begin to profit to the upside by expiration. One month further, the in-the-money June 19 strike price attracted a trader to bank gains by selling 8,200 calls for a premium of 1.24. Perhaps this individual decided to throw in the towel and take in profits today for fear that shares may fall further over the next month and a half and erode the call premium even more.

AMX America Movil SAB de CV ADR – The Mexican local and long-distance telephone services company has experienced a slight 1.5% rally in shares to stand at $36.88 today. We observed option traders loading up on puts in the May, June, and August contracts. The activity drove up the put-to-call ratio to more than 6-to-1 indicating that 6 puts were traded to each call option in action. At the near-term May 34 strike price some 4,500 puts were purchased for an average premium of 28 cents apiece. Further along in the June contract, bearish traders coveted 2,500 puts at the 35 strike for 1.50 each. Finally, the largest purchase was a chunk of 20,000 puts…

S&P 500 Snapshot: Another Save at the Bell

Courtesy of Doug Short.

The S&P 500 got off to weak start and, after retracing a modest morning rally, spent most of the day in the shallow red with an intraday low of 0.63%. But in the last seven minutes of trading, the index recovered enough to a make a small gain of 0.14%. This is the fourth advance, the first was Monday's 1.60 surge, but the last three have ranged from 0.05% to 0.17% with today's close near the high of the miserly three-day series.

The index is now up 5.02% for 2012, which is 6.93% off the interim closing high.

From an intermediate perspective, the S&P 500 is 95.2% above the March 2009 closing low and 15.6% below the nominal all-time high of October 2007.

Below are two charts of the index, with and without the 50 and 200-day moving averages.

OCCUPY YOUR RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE: BILL MOYERS INTERVIEWS TOM MORELLO

Courtesy of Dangerous Mind's Richard Metzger

Bill Moyers continues to make astonishing television with his truly great new PBS series, Moyers and Company. It’s unmissable, the most intelligent hour of programming on American TV today, bar none.

In the latest episode, Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello—a man I have a lot of admiration for—joined Bill Moyers for a particularly moving and inspiring conversation. From the show’s website

Songs of social protest—music and the quest for justice—have long been intertwined, and the troubadours of troubling times—Guthrie, Seeger, Baez, Dylan, and Springsteen among them—have become famous for their dedication to both. Now we can add a name to the ranks of those who l...

May Hedge Funds Performance Update: Red Is Bad

Courtesy of ZeroHedge. View original post here.

Submitted by Tyler Durden.

And it was shaping up to be such a good year. According to the latest just released HSBC hedge fund performance update, increasingly more funds are starting to lose it, certainly for the month, but increasingly more for the year. How many LPs will be eager to keep on paying 2% management fees (forget performance) to funds who at best are long AAPL (at least 226 of them), and at worst have underperformed the S&P, for the second year in a row, by anywhere from 5 to 15%?

Chinese, European Data Continues to Weaken as Market Potentially Forming New Bear Flag

Submitted by Mark Hanna

Courtesy of MarketMontage. View original post here.

First we'll go to the technicals.  Back in mid April I had opined a 'bear flag' formation was being created. [Apr 17, 2012: Potential Bear Flag Forming]  But the market being the difficult beast it is, head faked everyone and rather than a break down from said flag it first went UP and nearly touched yearly highs.  This caused everyone to think the bear flag had failed…. only to lead to a horrid May in the market.  Generally a bear flag will resolve relatively quickly but the longer...

Sector Detector: New “Grecian Formula” is making us all gray

Despite the fact that U.S. equities are well-positioned and well-supported to go up, once again it is the headlines out of Europe—especially Greece—that are scaring off investors. Some are saying that it is now likely (and even desirable) that Greece will default on all its sovereign debt, withdraw from the euro, and severely devalue its domestic currency (Drachma?). This will allow them to operate a balanced budget while pumping cash into growth initiatives, rather than suffer the ravages of Germany-mandated austerity.

Some say, so what? Greece makes up only about 2% of the Eurozone’s overall economy. Nevertheless, you might say that t...

Markets Die Then Flatten…Again (SPY, DIA, QQQ, IWM, FB)

Courtesy of John Nyaradi.

Markets died and then rallied to flat again as European leaders “prepared contingencies” for a possible Grexit

Markets died hard and fast earlier today as major indexes registered as much as 1.5% of losses after news that Euro zone officials were unofficially “preparing contingencies” for a Greek exit from the Euro.  Unofficial statements were not enough to keep markets down however, as major indexes rallied back to flat levels by the end of the day.

So the world continues to wait on Europe, as the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEACA:SPY) gained .05%, the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSEARCA:...

Weekend Virtual Portfolio Update 2/26/2012

My last weekend update is dated from January 30 so after a long hiatus, here is an update of our virtual portfolio. Since the last update, we have closed the AA Money portfolio due to a lack of enthusiasm (and activity) and I have stopped tracking the FAS strangle as the low VIX makes it hard to get rewarded for the risk! But we have added a small $5KP virtual portfolio which does not use any margin. FAS Money We have had to recover from a big move up by FAS and a low VIX which keeps option prices low. But the portfolio has gaine about 10% since the last update. Last update P&L - $5499.00 IWM Money Not a lot of activity in this portfolio where the main focus is on the large IWM BCS. But the portfolio has grown over 20% since the last update. Last update P&L - $1998.00 $5KP Portfolio This is the virtual portfolio that replaced the AA Money portfolio. It does not use margin and we will keep holdings under $5K. AAPL $50K P...
