Bearish Trades On Qualcomm

QCOM – Qualcomm, Inc. – Weekly put options purchased on Qualcomm yesterday are generating substantial overnight gains for some traders today, with shares in the name trading down more than 3.5% this afternoon.

Buyers of the Sep 13 ’13 $70 strike puts on Tuesday saw the value of those contracts more than triple overnight with the move in the price of the underlying. Time and sales data indicates traders picked up roughly 3,000 of the $70 puts yesterday for an average premium of $0.66 per contract. Today, the $70 puts are changing hands at a bid price of $2.33 each as of the time of this writing. Earlier in the session, roughly 1,300 of the $70 strike puts were sold at an average premium of $1.92, perhaps as some strategists take profits.

Meanwhile, bears positioning for shares in QCOM to extend declines this week snapped up roughly 2,200 of the Sep 13 ’13 $67.5 strike puts for an average premium of $0.33 each. Traders long the $67.5 puts may profit at expiration this week should shares in Qualcomm decline another 0.80% from the current price of $67.70 to breach the average breakeven point on the downside at $67.17.

FIO – Fusion-IO Inc. – Shares in Fusion-IO rallied 18% during early-afternoon trading on Wednesday to touch $15.50, the highest level since August 7th, on continued takeover chatter. Traders speculating shares in the name will extend gains in the near term appear to be picking up call options on the stock today.

Vera Bradley Call Options Active

VRA – Vera Bradley, Inc. – A sizable trade in Vera Bradley call options today appears to be bullish on shares of the handbags and accessories retailer through November expiration. Shares in VRA, down roughly 20% since this time last year, slipped 2.4% to a fresh 52-week low of $18.67 today. The company reports second-quarter earnings after the close on Wednesday.

The most-traded contracts are the Nov $20 calls, with volume topping 3,400 contracts versus open interest of 505 contracts. Most of the volume traded in a block of 1,900 calls at an asking premium of $1.20 per contract. The position starts making money if shares in Vera Bradley rally 13% over today’s low of $18.67 to exceed the breakeven point at $21.20. Overall options volume of around 5,100 contracts traded on the stock today is more than 10 times VRA’s average daily volume of approximately 470 contracts.

LULU – Lululemon Athletica, Inc. – Shares in the maker of yoga and athletic apparel are on the rise today, up as much as 4.6% during the session to $72.71 after the stock was initiated with a ‘Buy’ rating and price target of $90.00 at Citigroup. The retailer reports second-quarter earnings ahead of the opening bell on Thursday.

The stock attracted heavy volume in put options, with the put/call ratio dancing near 2.2 as of the time of this writing. Overall options volume on LULU is above 18,600 contracts just before 3:00 p.m. ET, roughly twice the stock’s average daily options volume of around 9,300 contracts. Some options traders appear to be bracing for the price of the underlying to pull back after earnings. Roughly 2,000 of the Sep 13 ’13 $72.5 strike weekly puts…

Fusion-io Calls Change Hands As Shares Rebound

Today’s tickers: FIO, EXPE & BID

FIO - Fusion-io, Inc. – Shares in the provider of big data storage solutions are in recovery mode on Friday, up 3.3% at $14.70 as of 11:10 a.m. ET, on the heels of a sharp selloff earlier in the week. The stock dropped 27%, the most ever, to a record low of $13.13 on Wednesday after Fusion-io’s CEO, David Flynn, and co-founder, Rick White, resigned. The company issued a press release on Wednesday announcing the management changes, naming former EVP and Chief Strategy and Technology Officer at Hewlett-Packard Co., Shane Robison, Fusion-io’s new Chairman and CEO. Options changing hands on FIO this morning indicates some traders are positioning for shares in the name to continue to recover in the near term. The most actively traded contracts as measured by volume are the Jun $16 strike calls, with volume currently topping 13,000 contracts versus open interest of 2,713 lots. Most of the $16 strike calls appear to have been purchased during the first 30 minutes of the trading session for an average premium of $0.65 each. Buyers of the upside calls stand ready to profit at expiration should shares in FIO rally more than 13% over the current price of $14.70 to surpass the average breakeven point at $16.65.

EXPE - Expedia, Inc. – Options in play on online travel company, Expedia, Inc., today are looking for shares in the name to rally substantially during the next couple of months. The stock, which advanced 3.4% to $57.89 by 11:30 a.m. in New York, is down roughly 15% off a record high of $68.09 achieved back in February. EXPE shares at the current level are still up more than 40% since this time last year. A sizable print in Expedia calls straight out of the gate this morning positions one strategist to benefit from continued gains in the price of the underlying. It looks like the trader purchased 3,000 calls at the July $59.48 strike for a premium of $2.05 per contract. The position…

Well, you guessed it, New York City of course - this dirty city has more pests and litter than any other large metropolis in the United States, according to newly compiled government data by the cleaning-services company Busy Bee.

The cleaning company ranked 40 large cities across the United States based on data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the American Housing Survey (AHS), and the U.S. Census Bureau to create an informative infographic to determine just how shitty America really is. Factors include litter, pests such as mice and cockroaches, population density, particulate matter a...

Is College Really for All?

By The Foundation for Economic Education. Originally published at ValueWalk.

In the last two and a half generations, the number of students who go on to attend college, as a percentage of the population, has tripled. In 1959, about 20 percent of high school students went on to college. Since relatively few people were earning degrees, having one all but guaranteed getting a good, high-paying job. As a result, parents, high schools, and colleges began encouraging more and more high school students to go to college. Today, about 60 percent of high school students go on to college. But has the big push to get kids into college done anything to improve outcomes? Is the average $250,000 investment in a four-year degree at all worth it? If not, what alternatives exist? Join Antony Davies and James Harrigan as they talk about this and more on this week’s episode of Words and Num...

US Olympians Are Turning To Bitcoin To Offset Competition-Related Costs

Courtesy of ZeroHedge. View original post here.

As many college athletes know all too well, funding for more niche sports like - for example - luge is often lacking, and securing more often requires hours of fundraising by the team's boosters.

Which is why, ahead of the Winter Games in PyeongChang, some teams started getting creative. For instance, fundraisers for the US luge team have started accepting donations in bitcoin. Indeed, the team has raised several thousand dollars worth of bitcoin.

'Bull Trap' in Dow Jones Industrial Average

Courtesy of Declan.

Starting to see evidence that the February bounce in markets is fading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished with a 'bull trap' as it ducked below breakout support despite finishing above yesterday's close. Volume dropped as relative performance against tech indices took a marked step lower. Troubling times for the 'flight-to-safety' route.

The Semiconductor Index had looked like it was ready to mount a challenge of the January 'bull trap' but the last couple of days have seen a second attempt at a reversal ...

The tricks propagandists use to beat science

Via Jean-Luc

How propagandist beat science – they did it for the tobacco industry and now it's in favor of the energy companies:

The tricks propagandists use to beat science

The original tobacco strategy involved several lines of attack. One of these was to fund research that supported the industry and then publish only the results that fit the required narrative. “For instance, in 1954 the TIRC distributed a pamphlet entitled ‘A Scientific Perspective on the Cigarette Controversy’ to nearly 200,000 doctors, journalists, and policy-makers, in which they emphasized favorable research and questioned results supporting the contrary view,” say Weatherall and co, who call this approach biased production.

A second approach promoted independent research that happened to support ...
