Markets are showing increased signs of investor anxiety, warns BofA's Macneil Curry. The Friday breakout in the VIX Index says that this anxiety will likely persist into next week. Indeed, Curry adds, the VIX has based from its highest levels in over a year suggesting that investors are more susceptible to bad news and defensive behavior than at any time in the past 12 months. Several markets look particularly susceptible to this change in sentiment.
From an equity perspective, the Nikkei stands out. Its breakdown from 5 week Flag support says its medium term downtrend has resumed, targeting last summer’s range lows between 12,400/13,400.
In FX, the Japanese ¥ is pa...

At Friday's close the eight markets on my world watch list turned in their worst collective weekly average of the past two calendar years, an eye-opening -3.19%. The second worse was the -2.59% average on June 18, 2013. All eight posted losses for the week, with the Mumbai SENSEX down the least at -0.50%. The S&P 500 was a distant second at -1.97%. Japan's Nikkei was the biggest loser at -6.20%.
The Shanghai Composite remains the only index on the watch list in bear territory -- the traditional designation for a 20% decline from an interim high. See the table inset (lower right) in the chart below. The index is down 42.26% from its interim high of August 2009. At the other end, the BS...

Bill Gates did not become one of the wealthiest individuals in the world by accident. Gates is a visionary, exceedingly charitable, and clearly ‘scary smart’.
All this said, Gates is neither perfect nor infallible. In fact, on some of the most critically important topics of the day, I think he is downright clueless. Let’s navigate.
I thank the readers who shared a recent interview Gates had with Rolling Stone in which there was the following ‘must read’ brief exchange:
RS: In the past, you have sounded cynical about the role that government can play in solving complex problems like health care or reforming anti-poverty policies.
BG: Not cynicism. You have to have a certa...

Institutional Financial Markets (NYSE: IFMI) ("IFMI"), a financial services company specializing in credit-related fixed income investments, announced today that it has sold its entire ownership interest in the Star Asia Group to an investment vehicle formed in connection with such sale and managed by Taro Masuyama and Malcolm MacLean, for approximately $20.0 million. In addition, IFMI will receive, for at least four years, 15% of the revenues of certain Star Asia Group management companies. In connection with the sale of its entire ownership interest in the Star Asia Group, IFMI sold its:
28% interest in Star Asia Finance, Limited (a permanent capital company formed in 2007 to invest in Asian commercial real estate debt and equity) ("Star Asia Finance"); 100% interest in...

Today was the beginning of “spring break” for the market. At least it seemed that way with a very low trading volume of only 600M shares on the NYSE. Either the college crowd does more trading than we imagined or parents are taking the week off as well.
The market barely woke up for the session with the S&P 500 down 0.05% and the NASDAQ down 0.03%. However, the DJI must have gotten extra sleep this weekend as it was up 0.21%. Small caps took a bigger hit with the Russell 2000 dropping nearly 0.50% percent. There was nothing major in the news other than a disappointing trading figure from China. Indeed, the whole week will only include a meager four major economic reports with Wholesale Inventories tomorrow, Retail Sales and Jobless Claims on Thursday, and Producer Price In...

Ladies and Gentlemen, hobos and tramps,
Cross-eyed mosquitoes, and Bow-legged ants,
I come before you, To stand behind you,
To tell you something, I know nothing about.
And so the circus begins in Union Square, San Francisco for this weeks JP Morgan Healthcare Conference. Will the momentum from 2013, which carried the S&P Spider Biotech ETF to all time highs, carry on in 2014? The Biotech ETF beat the S&P by better than 3 points.
As I noted in my previous post, Biotechs Galore - IPOs and More, biotechs were rushing to IPOs so that venture capitalists could unwind their holdings (funds are usually 5-7 years), as well as take advantage of the opportune moment...
