Digesting Stock Gains

Digesting Stock Gains

Courtesy of Wade of Investing Caffeine

Despite calls for “Sell in May, and go away,” the stock market as measured by both the Dow Jones Industrial and S&P 500 indexes grinded out a +1% gain during the month of May. For the year, the picture looks much the same…the Dow is up around +1% and the S&P 500 +2%. After gorging on gains of +30% in 2013 and +11% in 2014, it comes as no surprise to me that the S&P 500 is taking time to digest the gains. After eating any large pleasurable meal, there’s always a chance for some indigestion – just like last month. More specifically, the month of May ended as it did the previous six months…with a loss on...

The Delusional World Of Imperial Washington

Courtesy of ZeroHedge. View original post here.

Submitted by Tyler Durden.

Submitted by Michael Klare via TomDispatch.com,

Think of this as a little imperial folly update -- and here's the backstory.

In the years after invading Iraq and disbanding Saddam Hussein’s military, the U.S. sunk about $25 billion into “standing up” a new Iraqi army.  By June 2014, however, that army, filled with at least ...

The Big Four Economic Indicators: Real Retail Sales

Courtesy of Doug Short.

Note: This commentary has been updated to include the Real Retail Sales data for April.

Official recession calls are the responsibility of the NBER Business Cycle Dating Committee, which is understandably vague about the specific indicators on which they base their decisions. This committee statement is about as close as they get to identifying their method.

There is, however, a general belief that there are four big indicators that the committee weighs heavily in their cycle identification process. They are:

The Latest Indicator Data

Real Retail Sales: Retail Sales were flat in April (-0.001%) following the March bounce that in turn followed three months of contraction. The seasonally adjusted Consumer Price In...

Can Protalix BioTherapeutics Deliver?

Here's an update on a stock that Pharmboy is well familiar with, PLX. Pharmboy provided his thoughts for this article which was published by Lowenthal Capital Partners, and which I contributed to them. One reader asked the question: While PLX has sufficient cash for another year's operation, it needs to conserve resources and will likely need to raise money in the future. Would you care to venture a guess as to when you believe they will raise money (and what type vehicle they will use)?

Pharmboy's response: They will sell stock, and my guess is in 4Q15. I agree--selling stock is probably on the horizon sooner rather than later. Let's hope they get the stock moving higher before then. ~ Ilene

These Jobs Are Most Likely To Be Taken by a Computer (TIME)

King Dollar bouncing off long-term support?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble.

CLICK ON CHART TO ENLARGE

Almost 90-days ago the US Dollar was dealing with a 14-year resistance line that dated back to its all-time highs in 1985, around the 95 level. It pushed above this resistance line and closed just above the 100 level on the week ending 3/13/15. Since then the US$ has backed off some, coming back to test the old resistance line as potential test of support for its first time in history, around the 93 level.

Since testing this support line for the first time in history, the US$ has rallied around 4%.

At this time the US$ finds itself above the 93 support level and below this highs it hit at the 100 level.

Sector Detector: Stocks provide a tepid breakout as Fed greases the skids. So now what?

Courtesy of Sabrient Systems and Gradient Analytics

Early last week, stocks broke out, with the S&P 500 setting a new high with blue skies overhead. But then the market basically flat-lined for the rest of the week as bulls just couldn’t gather the fuel and conviction to take prices higher. In fact, the technical picture now has turned a bit defensive, at least for the short term, thus joining what has been a neutral-to-defensive tilt to our fundamentals-based Outlook rankings.

In this weekly update, I give my view of the current market environment, offer a technical analysis of the S&P 500 chart, review our weekly fundamentals-based SectorCast rankings of the ten U.S. business sectors, and then offer up some actionable trading ideas, including a sector rotation strategy using ETFs and an enhanced version using top-ranked stocks from the t...

An update on oil proxies

Courtesy of Jean-Luc Saillard

Back in December, I wrote a post on my blog where I compared the performances of various ETFs related to the oil industry. I was looking for the best possible proxy to match the moves of oil prices if you didn't want to play with futures. At the time, I concluded that for medium term trades, USO and the leveraged ETFs UCO and SCO were the most promising. Longer term, broader ETFs like OIH and XLE might make better investment if oil prices do recover to more profitable prices since ETF linked to futures like USO, UCO and SCO do suffer from decay. It also seemed that DIG and DUG could be promising if OIH could recover as it should with the price of oil, but that they don't make a good proxy for the price of oil itself.

Since...

Help One Of Our Own PSW Members

"Hello PSW Members –

This is a non-trading topic, but I wanted to post it during trading hours so as many eyes can see it as possible.  Feel free to contact me directly at jennifersurovy@yahoo.com with any questions.

Last fall there was some discussion on the PSW board regarding setting up a YouCaring donation page for a PSW member, Shadowfax. Since then, we have been looking into ways to help get him additional medical services and to pay down his medical debts.  After following those leads, we are ready to move ahead with the YouCaring site. (Link is posted below.)  Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated; not only to help aid in his medical bill debt, but to also show what a great community this group is.

Thank you for you time!
