Porsche Takes Top Spot…

Courtesy of Travis

Can you believe Porsche placed at the top of a J.D. Power long-term dependability study?  Rising from ninth place last year?  The annual study measures problems experienced by the original owners of vehicles after three years.

Last year, Buick and Jaguar tied for first- however, this year Buick came in third, tied with Lexus.  And Jaguar well, maybe it’s gone the ways of Jaguars’ past?  Despite improvements, changes of ownerships and all-new models- I will never put Jaguar and the word dependable in the same sentence without recalling the days when people bought two of them- one to drive whilst the other was in the shop.

The industry average was 155 problems per 100 vehicles- a slight decline from 167 problems per 100 cars last year.

J.D. Power’s survey studied more than 52,000 original owners of 2007 model-year vehicles between October and December 2009- and the statistic is often used in advertising.  Though, I don’t know how many Porschephiles will brag how dependable their Porsches are…

I really don’t put too much weight on this statistic, though I find it interesting.  See, with a car like a Porsche, which is typically a second or third car, (read limited use in most cases) and the fact that it’s a status symbol, a trophy, in high regard with its more-likely-than-not enthusiast driver- I don’t know how reliable the owner is in this case (in terms of reporting a problem, that is).

What they consider a problem, and what the driver of say a Toyota or Buick consider a problem…  Are two very different things.  And take into account the ways these cars are driven, one everyday to work, and the other for pleasure on weekends only- well, you’re more likely to think your everyday grind car is problematic than your prized sports car that you drive for pleasure on weekends.

I guess it all boils down to perspective, and not a hard statistic after all.
