UnitedHealth Group to Keep ObamaCare Provisions

Regardless of the upcoming Supreme Court decision on the legality of Obamacare, UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) has announced that it is set to keep some key provisions because they are good for people. According to a company statement, President and CEO Stephen Hemsley said, “The protections we are voluntarily extending are good for people’s health, promote broader access to quality care and contribute to helping control rising healthcare costs.”

UnitedHealth Group said that it will extend provisions such as covering preventive healthcare services such as vaccinations and high-blood pressure and diabetes screening, with no copay. Also, the company plans to ban lifetime dollar maximums on most benefits and will also allow dependents under the age of 26 to stay on their parents’ insurance.

Other insurers are following suit: Aetna (NYSE: AET) announced today that it would be keeping some parts of the bill also. Investors await announcements from other companies for further color, but it seems that more and more are anticipating at least some of the measures will be adopted across the industry.

The landmark healthcare bill has been challenged by 26 US states, mainly targeting the individual mandate portion of the act. A decision is expected by the end of the month from the Supreme Court, who can either repeal the entire law, parts of it, or let it stand altogether.
