Flake Won’t Rule Out Challenging Trump In 2020 Presidential Race

Update:  It seems that Trump is up and watching the Flake media circus this morning as he just offered the following response via Twitter:

Jeff Flake, with an 18% approval rating in Arizona, said "a lot of my colleagues have spoken out." Really, they just gave me a standing O!

Less than 24 hours after his resignation and strong rebuke of President Trump on the Senate Floor, Senator Flake is still making his rounds on the mainstream media circuit to discuss his bombshell speech.  This morning he met with George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America and seemingly hinted that he might be considering a Republican primary challenge to President Trump in 2020.

"That's a long time away, and we'll deal with that when it comes to it,"  Flake told ABC's George Stephanopoulos, when asked if he was ruling out a 2020 campaign.

"I'm focused on my next 14 months in the Senate, making sure we get some good policy. There are some things I want to accomplish in the short term," he said.

Meanwhile, a persistent Matt Lauer tried to get Flake to endorse Hillary Clinton months after an election and just as a whole series of scandals seem to be blowing up in her face again.  While he stopped short of offering that endorsement, Flake did admit that he didn't vote for President Trump last November.  Per The Hill:

"I didn't vote for this president last November," Flake told NBC's Matt Lauer on "The Today Show," adding that he did not vote for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton either.

"I am a Republican. I am a conservative. I would love to have a Republican president, but not at any cost," he said.

Flake would not say whether he thought it would be better if Clinton had become president.

"I can tell you no president, Democrat or Republican in recent memory has exhibited the kind of behavior that this president has," the senator said.

Of course, speaking on the Senate floor yesterday shortly after revealing his retirement, Senator Flake launched attack after attack on Trump telling colleagues that U.S. politics have become "injured" by the "reckless, outrageous and undignified behavior" emanating from the White House.

We must never regard as "normal" the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals. We must never meekly accept the daily sundering of our country – the personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedoms, and institutions, the flagrant disregard for truth or decency, the reckless provocations, most often for the pettiest and most personal reasons, reasons having nothing whatsoever to do with the fortunes of the people that we have all been elected to serve.

None of these appalling features of our current politics should ever be regarded as normal. We must never allow ourselves to lapse into thinking that this is just the way things are now. If we simply become inured to this condition, thinking that this is just politics as usual, then heaven help us. Without fear of the consequences, and without consideration of the rules of what is politically safe or palatable, we must stop pretending that the degradation of our politics and the conduct of some in our executive branch are normal. They are not normal.

Reckless, outrageous, and undignified behavior has become excused and countenanced as "telling it like it is," when it is actually just reckless, outrageous, and undignified.

And when such behavior emanates from the top of our government, it is something else: It is dangerous to a democracy. Such behavior does not project strength — because our strength comes from our values. It instead projects a corruption of the spirit, and weakness.

With that, seems it's time to start guessing what Trump's nickname will be for Senator Jeff Flake…'Flaky Jeff Flake'?
