jCrypto currency trading/ vehicles for investing

I hope someone on thIs board knows enough and has the time to perhaps explain the basics of the concepts to us.

I may not be the sharpest knife, I admit, but I don’t understand how a ‘currency’ can fluctuate so much day to day or even week to week.

Just like the dollar being printed Willi nillie by our Fed, bitcoin is being mined and they are talking splitting shares?

On top of that, there are these derivative plays people are investing in…like OSTK.

Other people are developing payment systems based on crypto. I was invited to invest in a Canadian start up that is promoting crypto currency credit cards and debit cards, for instance.

Fundamentally, however, the one thing I would want from a currency is stability. For example, if I have a million dollars, while it may be nice to have that worth $2M in a month, I would not like it if dropped in value to $100K over a few weeks.

Yet Another Chart That Screams "Look Out!"

Authored by John Rubino via,

So many patterns that have held for decades seem to have broken down, leading to one of two conclusions: Either this time really is different in ways that appear to violate what used to be seen as iron-clad laws of finance, or those laws have been bent but will reassert themselves with a vengeance sometime in the future.

The latest example is the relationship between corporate debt and default rates on that debt. Historically they’ve moved in the same direction, with hi...

Here’s a delicious little rant from Dr. D., by now a regular contributor at the Automatic Earth.

Dr. D: The schizophrenia surrounding the tariff plan is really startling. But then I could just say, “the level of insanity everywhere is startling.”

Self-avowed schmartz-guys are all “doesn’t the U.S. know their empire is failing and everybody is cutting them off? What are they thinking starting trade wars with allies and raising prices???” Stop. So your argument is the U.S. is losing its influence, other nations are about to cut it off and end the trade deficit, and thereby basically halt imports? Whi...

Here are a number of related, overlapping articles discussing an enormous social experiment called the US 2016 presidential election. Key players include Cambridge Analytica (a voter-profiling company with "an arsenal of weapons" to fight a culture war), billionaire Robert Mercer, Stephen Bannon, the Trump campaign, Facebook, algorithms, the American people, Christopher Wylie (whistleblower who worked at Cambridge Analytica), Alexander Nix (Cambridge Analytica's CEO), and the Russian oil giant, Lukoil.

How Trump Consultants Exploited the Facebook Data of Millions (NY Times)

LONDON — As the upstart voter-profiling company Cambridge Analytica prepared to wade into the 2014 American midterm elections, it had a problem.

"We've Been Hearing A Lot Of Complaints" - City Passes First US Bitcoin Mining Ban

Courtesy of Zere Hedge

In sleepy upstate New York, one small post-industrial city has adopted what's widely believed to be the first bitcoin mining ban in the US. On Thursday evening, the city council in Plattsburgh New York voted unanimously to impose an 18-month moratorium on bitcoin mining, per Motherboard.

As we pointed out earlier this month, two large-scale bitcoin mining operations in the town had become a tremendous drain on the local utilities. This is a problem because, according to the Municipal Electric Utility Association, since the 19...

The tricks propagandists use to beat science

Via Jean-Luc

How propagandist beat science – they did it for the tobacco industry and now it's in favor of the energy companies:

The tricks propagandists use to beat science

The original tobacco strategy involved several lines of attack. One of these was to fund research that supported the industry and then publish only the results that fit the required narrative. “For instance, in 1954 the TIRC distributed a pamphlet entitled ‘A Scientific Perspective on the Cigarette Controversy’ to nearly 200,000 doctors, journalists, and policy-makers, in which they emphasized favorable research and questioned results supporting the contrary view,” say Weatherall and co, who call this approach biased production.

A second approach promoted independent research that happened to support ...
