There are currently 68.5 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, according to the UN Refugee agency, of which 25.4 million are refugees and 3.1 million are seeking asylum.

Focusing just on North America over the same time period, it’s clear that refugee flows are far lower compared to the eastern hemisphere..

Using a different visualization from the CMU Create lab, the flow of refugees into Europe – particularly Greece and Italy, is stunning.

According to the UN Refugee agency, there are 25.4 million refugees, while 57% of refugees came from South Sudan, Afghanistan and Syria.

An unprecedented 68.5 million people around the world have been forced from home. Among them are nearly 25.4 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of 18.

There are also an estimated 10 million stateless people who have been denied a nationality and access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement.

In a world where nearly 1 person is forcibly displaced every two seconds as a result of conflict or persecution, our work at UNHCR is more important than ever before. -UNHCR

From 2014-2017, there has been a global spike in asylum seekers amid an overall increase in displaced people.
