Another “Beautiful Letter”, Another Missile Test, & A “Small Apology” From Kim Jong Un

Another North Korean missile test, another “beautiful” letter from Kim Jong Un. On the morning following a fifth missile test in about two weeks, President Trump tweeted about the new letter, which included “a small apology for testing the short range missiles” and that Kim would like to start more talks at the conclusion of scheduled US-South Korean military exercises.

….also a small apology for testing the short range missiles, and that this testing would stop when the exercises end. I look forward to seeing Kim Jong Un in the not too distant future! A nuclear free North Korea will lead to one of the most successful countries in the world!

“He stated, very nicely, that he would like to meet and start negotiations as soon as the joint U.S./South Korea joint exercise are over,” Trump tweeted of the letter delivered two days ago.

Trump described it as “a long letter, much of it complaining about the ridiculous and expensive exercises.” No timetable was given in reference to proposed renewed negotiations, only that Kim is open to them occurring after the controversial exercises, according to Trump’s characterization of the letter.

According to Bloomberg, citing South Korean officials, there’s a “high chance” of another launch as the US-South Korean drills are initiated

In the past two weeks, though, North Korea has tested an increasingly sophisticated, hard-to-track missile system that could wipe out South Korean and Japanese cities — not to mention U.S. forces based in both countries.

However, the drills have been described by top Trump admin officials as “largely computer-driven” with fewer troops and assets on the ground.

Despite Trump’s historic, first ever visit by an American president to the demilitarized zone six weeks ago to meet with Kim, working-level talks have yet to begin as was proposed.

Early this week Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responded “No” when he was asked point blank if Pyongyang’s latest spate of short-range launches “sour the environment for talks,” according to Bloomberg.
