Along with Porsche, Ford has now officially entered the race to catch and dethrone Tesla as the most popular electric sports car.

The American manufacturer unveiled its Mustang Mach-E SUV on Sunday night - the culmination of the company's $11 billion investment into EVs.

The Mach-E will be different from many other EVs in that it will be offered in a "slew of variants and trims", according to The Verge. Ford will sell a five seater SUV that will go 210 miles, but also ones  that can go 300 miles. Some options will fly off the line, while others will "barely edge out a Chevy Bolt".

The cars start at $43,895, but buyers are eligible for a full $7,500 federal tax credit. Including other government incentives, the price could come down by as much as $10,000 in some states.

The base model, called the "Select" model, will be offered in both rear wheel drive (RWD) and all wheel drive (AWD) configurations. The RWD version will have a range of about 230 miles and 255 HP and the AWD model will be about a second quicker off the line at the expense of about 20 miles of range.

The next model up, the "Premium" model, starts at $50,600 and ships in late 2020. It is offered with a standard range and extended range battery options. The model ranges from 210 miles to 300 miles depending on your battery configuration and whether or not the vehicle is AWD or RWD.

Both AWD versions of the car are supposed to get from 0 to 60 in the mid five second range.

The top end model is called the Mach-E GT. It costs $60,500 and comes in an AWD version only. Its range is about 250 miles and has 459 total horsepower, meaning it can go from 0 to 60 in under four seconds.

And paging the Model Y: there's tons of headroom and legroom in the car – "29 cubic feet of storage space in the back (accessible via a hatch door), and 4.8 cubic feet of storage in the front trunk". The car also includes a driver monitoring system that includes the company's CoPilot 360 driver assistance system. Ford says it eventually aims for hands-free highway driving.

The car has a 15.5" vertical screen in the middle of the dashboard and is light on buttons. The screen is used to control everything from climate settings, to media, to vehicle controls.
