Audio Captures Ominous Threat To Crash Plane Into US Capitol

CBS News has obtained audio of a threat to attack the US Capitol which was illegally broadcast over FAA airwaves, now subject of an urgent federal investigation.

In the audio a digitized voice can be heard saying that an aircraft will be flown into Washington D.C. as an attack in order to avenge the death of slain Iranian General Qassem Soleimani:

"We are flying a plane into the Capitol on Wednesday. Soleimani will be avenged," the eerie recorded message said.

The audio threat burst over federal aviation airwaves on Monday, as The Wall Street Journal describes:

The threat was transmitted Monday on a radio frequency used by the Federal Aviation Administration facility that handles high-altitude traffic around the New York metropolitan region, one of these people said. It is among the FAA’s busiest air-traffic control centers, located in Ronkonkoma, N.Y.

Further according to the report, it's possible for someone to transmit on that frequency yet without having to utilize a sophisticated system: "The message likely was able to be transmitted, one person said, because the air-traffic control system is accessible by some portable scanners available to consumers, aviation buffs and pilots," WSJ noted.

The message of what appears crafted as "warning" of a 9/11-style attack on the capitol came as Iranians are mourning the Jan. 3rd, 2020 assassination of Gen. Soleimani. This weekend marked the one-year anniversary of his killing by US drone attack at Baghdad International Airport.

Without commenting further, the FBI said it takes "all threats of violence to public safety seriously" while air traffic controllers have been placed on a higher state of alert looking for any plane suddenly deviating from its flight path

As yet federal authorities haven't identified the source of the message, with CBS reporting that law enforcement officials do not expect that an attack is imminent, but view it more as a threat intended to stir panic.

The incident has indeed placed Capitol Hill on heightened security as lawmakers gather Wednesday to formally ratify the presidential election.
