What did you think of the IBD Big Picture conclusion that the market was back in a confirmed rally? Jonah Keri said a lot of positive things, then he ends the article saying that losers outnumbered the up stocks by a wide margin on the NASDAQ, and the IBD 100 was flat--seemed liked he contradicted himself on the market status.

  2. happyTrading

Well, whether or not the minds are already made up (“confirmed” rally), I think we’ll find out soon, especially after the FOMC meeting!

  3. patrickc

Any thoughts on reloading oil puts this morning?

  4. Chuck Greene

    Happy,
I have the same question as BBD, I’m a member but not getting the email trades. Where on your site do I sign up for that?

  5. Lithium Rocketbottle

Anybody else have LUM puts. When will they open this mess?

  6. jazzkool

Happy, ditto for me, but in addition, I don’t know how to access your site.

  7. happyTrading

As you probably know, I’m juggling many, many, things right now. I’m posting in “5? different places: my blog, phil’s blog, private happy trades, email alerts, and then, public happy trades. So, forgive me if my replies are slow. I’m doing my best. Thanks!

Greene, click on the “Email Alerts” tab on top of my members’ site. Thanks!

    BBD, Chuck:

WYNN 119! Time to sell into the enthusiasm…

  10. happyTrading

    WYNN
    cashed out for +392%!

  11. chemistry

Theres gotta be a short squeeze in WYNN today, after the run yesterday and then the earnings gap.

  12. chemistry

I thought for sure NILE would be up big with the microscopic float and huge short interest there. May develop later though. They didnt have a blowout, but the beat and raised.

  13. Joseph

Happy – are you doing with ONXX on the earnings news? Selling into the initial excitement perhaps?

  14. albo

Selling ITM Sep calls against remaining leaps on LVS & WYNN.
    WOW ! ! !

  15. Optrader

ILMN: broke $48, new ATH. Amazing.

  16. BillBigD

BIOD- congrats on those FFIV puts!
    WYNN- NICE win for all!

  17. Mr_Sparkle

    Djczing,

I ended up putting that GS trade in with the Jan 180s/Oct 195s @ 22.40/9.60. It does give up the IV we talked about but on the other hand I don’t have to watch it quite so much. I’ll keep you posted…

  18. Optrader

    GMKT very strong.

  24. BillBigD

FAB- thanks I was wondering about that!
NILE- Didn’t have for earnings but did Creditspread Aug 75/70 for .40. Stock needs to drop over 10% before a problem

  25. bmb

Picked up MA yesterday. Good timing i guess, half-out on the 140′s and rest on house money

  26. cap1

    Good morning folks.

Optrader, in response to yesterday’s AHR question, yes, looks like bottom may be in. I puked looking at the chart since mid-July, which mirrors many many financial related stocks.

AHR reports earnings tomorrow morning. Earnings should be good. The keys will be a) if they maintain the dividend, and b) whether or not they have had meaningful pressure to de-lever in a way that resulted in forced asset sales. If management handles the call right, this can be back to 10+ very fast.

Stock is a good way to play. Even Jan $7.50 options look attractive. Looks like the shorts are starting to cover, but price is still way too low.

  27. thedraz

    Dragon –

If you don’t mind, what’s the play on PCLN?

    Thank you.

  28. BillBigD

CLWR- someone on this blog likes this stock, is it a good time to start looking at it? I AM NOT being a wiseass I read some good things about it a few weeks ago after it was mentioned.

  29. KeyserSoze

    Happy –
I figured out a way to see how long the email alerts take to get from your fingers to my eyes. That ONXX,WYNN post got sent at 9:57:38 (EST) and showed up on my screen at 9:58:07…29 seconds. Really great feature. Thanks

  30. Loonie

BWLD got an upgrade this morning.

  31. mj23

GOOG about time it starts to fill the gap above 523.

IMB upgraded by 2 or 3 brokers

    NMX any news?

  36. zmann

Re reloading oil puts: I’m still short some of the smaller refiners but a lot of damage has been done in among the E&P stocks and I’m actually looking to get more long once the market finds its groove again. Of late, I’ve been adding to things like CHK and would add there again and to SWN and NFX but not before today’s meeting.

CRK had a nice beat as expected and the stock is starting to come back up after a punishing month.

In service: OII continues to run. Like HAL at these levels long.

BBG reported a beat but they failed to strip out the large one time gains in the numbers so it’s not as good as it looked and cost control was, well, not controlled. The stock was up strong early and if we get a gift from the Fed and a rally it probably goes higher but then I’d be adding to my puts.

  37. chemistry

    FFIV going to zero. LOL.

  38. BillBigD

RL-not going out of business today, nice jump from $87 yesterday

  39. Optrader

Fed: everyone expects that if they don’t lower rates the market will crash. Remember that when everyone expects something, it usually does not happen.

  40. Brainfill

Solar stocks (maybe?) on the move with upgrade on JASO.

  41. libertarian wackjob

    Lithium Bottlerocket: Congrats

I got out my LUM puts a short while back after nice gain DAMN!!

AHM the 2nd caught AHM missed this one.

  42. optiondragon

I have a 100% gainer already on the PCLN so now sell half for a free ride. Puts did not lose value at all which is amazing. But I am selling the 55 puts in order to recalibrate the play going into earnings.
right now for me I rolled into the AUG 70 calls for 1.20 and now looking to buy AUg 60 puts very soon but wow what a PCLN move….told ya.

Nice win on AHM. I still have NFI, but that is about it. Stopped out of LFG and FAF. Weird action in the space today.

  49. Andrew

No one expects the Fed to cut rates today. They hope Bernanke says something that soothes, and hints at a cut later in the year.

  50. Lithium Rocketbottle

    LUM

That is why I got caught net short yesterday, because I saw LUM halted. Missed the biggest up day for the right reasons, but it hurt.

Happy, I’m looking at MPEL. Up 6 % today from Wynn and lvs. Just opened their high end casino in Macau in July. Any thoughts

  53. Buzz

I think it will be a win (i.e., bullish) if the Fed merely tones down the anti-inflation hawkishness in their statement and “recognizes” that they might need to cut at a not-too-distant point in the future. Not enough for Cramer, but probably enough for most people to stop selling until the next bit of bad news.

  54. libertarian wackjob

got the Sept 35s (just 5 contracts) at $1.75. It is strong, but, have gone up so much, so don’t want to take a big gamble.

  63. mSquare

CLWR – I am the one who likes it and owns it talked about it earlier. I own stock and periodically write Puts on it trying to get more on the cheap and/or collect premiums. So far just gained and covered the puts and just own the original shares bought around $24 week of the IPO. It is a good stock that I hope will double in year or two.

Wait till today afternoon, see how tech. & general market is doing and if almost same as now, look at Sep 20/25 Puts – you should be able to get stock around $23s – a price I think will hold for a while.

Another catalyst is Sprint’s earnings later this week – they announced a WiMax sharing deal with CLWR and if they say good things about their WiMax strategy, it could move CLWR big.

  64. windywheel

Fed: I agree that no one expect rates to be cut today. But a lot of people expect the market to react negatively if/when rates are not cut. Anyway, this is what I have been reading everywhere. I am taking a complete neutral stance ahead of Fed. Plenty of time to make some money after the market has decided.

Some data i saw in one of the newsletters:

Take a look at these numbers from the Mortgage Bankers Association that shows the amount of adjustable-rate mortgages that have or will reset each month in 2007-2008.

    January 2007: $22 billion
    February 2007: $25 billion
    March 2007: $35 billion
    April 2007: $37 billion
    May 2007: $36 billion
    June 2007: $42 billion
    July 2007: $43 billion
    August 2007: $52 billion
    September 2007: $58 billion
    October 2007: $55 billion
    November 2007: $52 billion
    December 2007: $58 billion
    January 2008: $80 billion
    February 2008: $88 billion
    March 2008: $110 billion
    April 2008: $92 billion
    May 2008: $76 billion
    June 2008: $75 billion
    July 2008: $50 billion
    August 2008: $35 billion
    September 2008: $26 billion
    October 2008: $20 billion
    November 2008: $15 billion
    December 2008: $175 billion

As you can see, the largest portion of mortgage resets is not until next year.

We have just seen $197 billion of mortgage resets through June. That is less than we will see in February and March 2008.

The first six months of next year will see more than the total for 2007 ($521 billion).

I’ve been benefitting from EMC, so thank you for all the info. Do you think this has anything to do with today’s drop:

    Press Release Source: VMware, Inc.

VMware Announces Extension of Exchange Offer
Tuesday August 7, 6:00 am ET

PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ — VMware, Inc. announced today that the exchange offer by VMware and EMC Corporation has been extended and will now expire at 11:00 a.m., Pacific Time, on August 13, 2007, unless further extended. Any such extension will be followed by a public announcement no later than the next business day after the offer was scheduled to expire. The offer had been previously scheduled to expire at 11:00 a.m., Pacific Time, on August 9, 2007.

The offer is being made to certain employees of VMware and its subsidiaries in the United States to exchange all of their outstanding stock options to purchase EMC common stock for options to purchase VMware Class A common stock, and to exchange all of their restricted EMC stock for restricted VMware Class A common stock.

The depositary for the exchange offer has advised VMware and EMC that, through 11:59 p.m., Eastern Time, on August 6, 2007, a total of approximately 10,277,000 shares of EMC stock underlying EMC options and approximately 3,197,000 shares of restricted EMC stock were validly tendered and not withdrawn, representing approximately 83.6% of the outstanding shares of EMC stock underlying EMC options and approximately 55.0% of the outstanding shares of restricted EMC stock eligible to be tendered.

Optrader: Yes, no one expects Fed cut today and I agree w/ you on possible reaction. The key will be if they say anything stupid (like BSC CFO did on Friday).

  80. codydog

before you get too wildly carriedaway by resetting mtgs, better idea is to figure out what percent of the economy housing is, and what percent mtg arent performing, you’ll be surprised by how small the numbers are relative to the economy

AHR-Cap, thank you for the info. I wish earnings were not tomorrow, as I really like the chart right now, but I don’t want to gamble on it. I was looking at selling some premium against my stock and creating a delta neutral position, but the spread on the options is really bad. I think I’ll have to sell most of it tonight and see how it goes.

  84. zmann

CRK up 5% on their beat with the XNG (gassy stocks) down a percent. If the market does well after the fed this one runs back to $30 in the next two weeks.

BBG – doing ok but not as well as you’d expect from the headlines. I’ll be looking at additional puts during the q&a a little later this morning. They’ve got some serious cost issues to explain. Plus everybody’s reporting a bottom line beat but it has a giant gain in it that the newswires are too stupid to back out. Would have been a slight miss without it but the company left out the ex gain number.

SWN calls are a steal here.

  85. bmb

I am not worried by resetting mortgages. What worries me is the general impact on consumer spending, as any mtg payments at the higher rates is going to cut down on other things. Its like paying 5 bucks for gas instead of 2.

  96. Andrew

CFC said on their call that roughly 1/3 have been refinancing before their mortgages reset, so those numbers are likely inflated to a degree.

  97. bmb

    Mort

A lot of folks have bought homes on Adjustable Rate Mortgages – this offers a low introductory rate for the initial period (usually 5 -7 yrs) and then the rate resets based on prevailing interest rates. If prevailing rates are lower, you will end up with a lower rate. If they are higher (by a quite a bit currently), the new rate will go up significantly, so their monthly mortgage payments will reset to higher payments.

  98. optiondragon

Happy OIH alert. RIG looks great as a buy down here watching for a breakout above 100.
    Scoping AUG 100@2.00

  99. bmb

    Andrew

Sure they are refinancing, but i bet their payments are still higher than the initial rate they paid on the ARM. Anyway you look at it, a lot of folks have bought relatively expensive homes at low rates initially and are going to end up paying more – whether with ARM reset or with refinance to fixed rate. My concern is what this will do to consumer spending..

In response to your query on my zmansenergybrain.com site regarding the Calyon service sector upgrade:

I think the guys at Calyon love sticking it to the boys at Op Co who got scared of the broad market and downgraded a ton of things yesterday. B of A was busy downgrading the sector last week as well.

I’d say for 2/3rds of the Oil Service names, they’re having the their all time dream date of year. Especially guys like RIB/ GSF who have long lead contracts which aren’t impacted by the day to day, w to w, or m to m moves in oil and gas prices. These are deep offshore operators who are seeing contracts move in only one direction due to global tightness: UP!

The only pocket of weakness in the group would be the onshore guys and you’ll note that the most exposed to drilling on land is is BHI which they only labeled ADD while everyone else including my slug of a position in HAL rated Buy.

ARM resets. I think the concern is overblown.
30 year fixed rates today are about 6%. New ARM’s slightly lower (should be much lower).
So, someone with a lower rate ARM, benefitted for 5-7 years from lower payments, amortizes down, and new payment will be same or a bit higher. Not everyone w/ ARM is a subprime borrower.

My folks have an ARM that rolls next Dec. We will refi it between now and then. No biggie. Meanwhile, they saved $9,000 in P&I payments by having the ARM for five years.

    Major Disconnect in Subprime

Late last Friday I gave a call to Dave Donhoff at No Bull Mortgage and was wondering about subprime and Alt-A, and how they were affected by these treasury gyrations. Before I go further, let me say that Dave is one of the good guys. He has not had a single returned loan or foreclosure on one of his customers in the last 6 years. Although Dave has not been tracking exactly what I wanted he did offer this:

    * Almost all stated income loans everywhere vanished last Friday.
    * Almost all 2/28 ARMs vanished last Friday.
    * While this was eventually expected it was not expected by everyone overnight.

As we were talking I was fortunate that a representative of major mortgage lender who had a scheduled appointment stopped by to see Dave. That person agreed to talk to me on condition anonymity so I will honor the request. But here is what I found out from that major lending insider.

    * Subprime rates have risen by as much as 190 basis points at his organization in just the last 2 weeks!
    * Many other lending institutions have done the same thing.
    * The definition of prime has tightened considerably, everywhere.
    * Any variance from prime raises the mortgage rate.
    * Small differences in FICO score now matter (sometimes by a lot).
    * Every little thing adds up.
    * 90% LTV rates are higher than 85% LTV rates which are higher than 80% LTV rates.
    * 100% LTV rates are very difficult to come for subprime and even Alt-A.
    * Condos vs. homes matters significantly.
    * There were 3 rate increases in the last 2 weeks even as 10 year treasury rates rallied.
    * Second mortgages have nearly vanished – no market.
    * 2/28 arms – gone.
    * Someone who is “really clean” but is not prime (but close) and is putting down 20% has had a 70-80 basis point hike in the last 2 weeks.
    * The bankrate charts might not show it, but in the last two weeks nearly every loan rate went up even as treasuries rallied significantly. The primest of prime was perhaps flat.

XOM, HAL, APC, CHK, RIG all will bounce nicely on that scenario. But the fed has to play ball.

yes, the 145 AAPL calls sold are doing just what i want, thanks very much for noticing
they were as high as 1.35 earlier, and still higher than i sold them for, but it wasn’t a momentum position, i hope to hold to expiration

regarding NOV, as you are the expert on this one, i’ve sold aug 120′s at $2.45 to offset the really bad purchase of the aug 120 calls bought at $4.20. would you reposition here? your thoughts and support is very much appreciated, thanks!!

  148. zmann

If energy run continues the NFX 50s and the SWN 40s are attractive here. That if depends on your thoughts on the fed. If people like what they say these should zoom but are still down on the day at present.

Should have added the CHK 35s to that list of E&P names that are down for no reason and should run given the conditions in my prior post. NFX positive.

I pay $0.75 per contract with both firms, no minimum, no flat fee. I have decided to just ignore commissions, they are part of the game. When I make $5,000 on a trade that I hold for a day, do I really care if I spent $150 in commission? windy Uncle Benny’s previous statement mentions a contingency on how they will act based on new data and there certainly has been a flood of it so expectation is high that he will address the concerns and I expect if he ignores the new data that will be perceived negatively, much like Phil talked about traders acting like ostriches sometimes putting their heads in the sand and getting kicked in the behind so too will the markets expect the FED to get a kick in the behind if they too act like ostriches! The old favorite insurance plays like the DIAs should work well though if it starts to gather steam I think it might be like ‘monkey investing’ where you can pick any old stock and be rewarded with puts…I sure hope we get some reaction either way, I’ll be very disappointed if we don’t get volatility after the statement comes through.

Looks like bad initial reaction to the Fed statement… direct from the FOMC website:

    For immediate release

The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to keep its target for the federal funds rate at 5-1/4 percent.

Economic growth was moderate during the first half of the year. Financial markets have been volatile in recent weeks, credit conditions have become tighter for some households and businesses, and the housing correction is ongoing. Nevertheless, the economy seems likely to continue to expand at a moderate pace over coming quarters, supported by solid growth in employment and incomes and a robust global economy.

Readings on core inflation have improved modestly in recent months. However, a sustained moderation in inflation pressures has yet to be convincingly demonstrated. Moreover, the high level of resource utilization has the potential to sustain those pressures.

Although the downside risks to growth have increased somewhat, the Committee’s predominant policy concern remains the risk that inflation will fail to moderate as expected. Future policy adjustments will depend on the outlook for both inflation and economic growth, as implied by incoming information.

Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Ben S. Bernanke, Chairman; Timothy F. Geithner, Vice Chairman; Thomas M. Hoenig; Donald L. Kohn; Randall S. Kroszner; Frederic S. Mishkin; Michael H. Moskow; William Poole; Eric Rosengren; and Kevin M. Warsh.

“Although the downside risks to growth have increased somewhat, the Committee’s predominant policy concern remains the risk that inflation will fail to moderate as expected. Future policy adjustments will depend on the outlook for both inflation and economic growth, as implied by incoming information.”

Global expansion is the biggest problem, this creates inflationary pressure. In other words the fed believes, oil, metals, timber, food, everything that we use in our daily lives to prosper will continue to rise in price because of demand.

GOOG staying positive, this market cannot handle another 200+ point drop again, that would be disastrous.

  287. mj23

NYMEX bastards have not got the message yet! Inflation too high, crude should go down. LOL

  288. KC

    kustomz,

actually that would be partly due to the weak dollar. I still think the Fed has to raise rates at some point soon.

Kudos to happy, zmann, sage, dragon and BBD for towing the rope while Phil’s gone, especially in these markets.

we need wait for it to at least break 60 before adding. It hasn’t gone below the support, so, I’m not worrying about it. The weekly chart is pinching in, once it opens up, WFR can run. Patience my friend.

  327. Optrader

This is fun! Can we please keep this volatility for another couple of weeks?

  328. happyTrading

I don’t have Aug. I have Sept! Aug is tough. Unless something big happens, it is unlikely

  330. zmann

Holy smokes those CHK 35s worked!

  331. KeyserSoze

AAPL – Depending on the scope of product changes, the Apple Web store could be down a couple hours. They always do a planned shutdown during the event and then “re-open” later in the day. With this announcement there were a lot of little things that probably touch a lot of pages (iMac, iWeb, iLife, the new Numbers program). Not a lot of really big market moving news but probably enough to create a lot of internal work for the layout guys.

  332. OptionSage

Just look at the strength in Google today – again…trading around $517

  333. vishal

Sage, I hope BIDU wld follow GOOG.

  334. Phil

    Heya people!

Looks like another wild Fed day, no surprise on no raise. As I thought, language indicates they are not going to lower rates to fund a commodity bubble (not that they could if they wanted to…). Unanimous vote is going to drive Cramer nuts but this is not a bad thing for the markets – some demonstration of fiscal responsibility is badly needed to restore confidence in the dollar.

If you read the list of voting members, you sure won’t have an easy time fin$$ding 3 that you would need to even begin to swing the Fed over to “opening the discount window” for Cramer’s pals. This is not good for brokers in trouble, the question is really – which brokers are in how much trouble? They’ve mostly already taken their lumps…

    dragon, I got the 220s!

  355. Phil

Broker shorts – I wouldn’t say none, I’d say look for the ones that haven’t been hit (if any) and then we need to take a good look at their profile. Much like builders, we want to short the ones that grew the fastest over the past 18 months as we can assume they were buying at the top but, also like the builders, they will deny, deny, deny – right up until the minute they are forced to write down their portfolios so it could be a long rough ride. I’m in no hurry myself, if they run back to ATHs, then I’ll be highly motivated but right now, my big regret was not taking the long side of BSC at my target price.

I just walked in and I’m just walking out but this doesn’t look like much of a rally with brokers and big oil leading a bounce. No SOX? Not good… At least the Russells moving a bit but maybe I’ll have a chance to put up the big chart later and see where we are.

Gotta go to a 10pm dinner with my kids (still considered early bird in this town!) they’re more adapted to the time change than I am! Later all…

  378. Brainfill

Spent much of today rebalancing the risk in my portfolio, with market so volatile:

Rolled FSLR & DRYS (sold puts) into Sept., to gain time in case today’s gains don’t hold.
Sold Aug AAPL calls against leaps & stock and bought back (sold) puts, so less bullish on s/t.
Sold Aug GS calls, on spike, against leaps.
Looking at puts on XHB on homebuilders as this spike is too tempting.

It sounds like Cramer is trying win back some viewership by taking credit for the late day rally

  407. kustomz

Cramer? This guy just doesnt have the ability to be totally truthful, must be from all those years of running a hedge fund. Mortgage companies were giving money AWAY, i have seen it first hand…if you made 40k a year you had 600k availble to purchase a home.

Thats just plain nuts and asking for trouble. In reality your yearly income would have to be 180k to qualify for that amount….the banks are far from being out of the woods. FARRR.

The problem isn’t people not having the ability to get credit the problem is people that got the credit weren’t in a position to payback that credit. Cramer Cramer Cramer? He wants the banks to throw bad money after bad money. NUTS? I think so.

    mj “CSCO”…agreed!! ;)

  408. KC

BillBigD – Thanks, you’re still in it too, aren’t you? I’m surprised by the numbers frankly, otherwise I’d be hedged less. At the ~$70 AH price, I’m so close to not owing the caller anything, but the safe thing would be to roll myself and the caller up/out.

Cramer … CNBC should have fired his a$$ for that meltdown (watched the video this morning finally). Instead, they run commercials with it.

Market … Opttrader, the market could be rallying because this washout cleared out a lot of folks and it may be time to fry the bears again. Where is the real bad news gonna come from … mortgage companies ? getting old already. Bear Stearns ? may have weathered the storm + WS and Fed probably came to the rescue. Unless Goldman or Merrill blows …. the party may come back for options expiration week next week.

OK – Now I feel like I’m really missing something!

I still get more useful info about the market reading the day’s comments here than in all the other financial news I can read combined! Nice job by all.

This chart is a must-read in the Journal: http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/info-flash07.html?project=globalblowup07&h=530&w=978&hasAd=1&settings=globalblowup07

I have to lean cautiously into the “where there’s smoke, there’s fire camp” and stick to mainly cash at the moment, and not just because I’m on vaca but if we get a real Nasdaq break over 2,575 (I suppose over 2,600, I really have to wing these numbers as I’m down to about 10% of my normal screen space) then I’d want to nibble a bit on the laggards. On the other hand, if CSCO can’t get us over 2,600 during the day and can’t sustain 2,575 EOD and the SOX continue to drag (CSCO not a member)… then shorting the Qs may be in order – along with the rest of the market they could drag down!

Nice post in the journal re Fed direction (comments are also interesting): http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2007/08/07/economists-react-bernanke-tied-to-the-mast/

I like YRCW for a leap, maybe the ’09 $35s at $4.50 as you can sell Sept $35s for .45 but I’d wait a bit on the sell as I scale in. Slowdown or no, if gas (don’t care about oil per se) calms down they could turn quickly as cost of revenue used to be 73% and was 86% last year due to a horrific Q3. These guys have a p/e of 9 and a forward p/e of 8 based on very low expectations and Baird just gave them an upgrade (to neutral), which leaves them with 2 buys, 4 holds and 5 sells – lots of room for improvement! I think you take off on the cruise tomorrow, ENJOY! I told you difficult it is following the market 6 or 7 hours ahead. LOL

  418. Phil

VIX still indicates that up is “correct” direction but ISE Sentiment Index hit ATH of 39 (extreme bearish) and the CBOE put/call ratio was 1.39, also near record bearish. Is everybody reading my stuff and hedging with puts or is something really bad about to happen?

LUM is a great example of what I talked about this morning. Look for financials that had great growth in 2005 especially and we can assume that growth was in sub-prime as housing had already started to slow and the pressure was on for these guys to show better returns. We did this with the builders a couple of years ago to great effect and the logic is even better here as there are no “smart” sub-prime lenders, they are all getting whacked on anything they couldn’t dump of to FNM or FRE who, INSANELY, are going up on talk that they will EXPAND their portfolios to take on MORE risk!

This simply blows me away as some sort of irrational optimism gone wild. These guys are already way too large for comfort and have already been found guilty of cooking the books to hide problems in the past.

“Raising the ceiling on their portfolios “runs contrary to everything that Ofheo director James Lockhart and the Treasury have said for years about the portfolios posing systemic risks to the economy,” Seiberg wrote in a research note Tuesday.”

    http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/fannie-mae-freddie-mac-rise/story.aspx?guid=%7BC9A61E47%2D386F%2D4444%2DA02F%2D0AB3C1FC05E9%7D&siteid=yhoof

    Meanwhile, IMB kicked ass today!

Oh yeah, watch out for the next round of consumer confidence numbers! Michigan Sentiment is next Friday and pretty sure to be down from 90.4% last month (I was talking to a group from Michigan and “sucks” was frequently used to describe their local economy. But the big Kahuna is the Aug 28 consumer confidence that can’t possibly match the staggering 114 we just posted, which I found odd to say the least. We have import prices for July on Friday – way up on oil probably. along with the Treasury who will (yawn!) need another $37Bn or so to to get through the month.

Next week, the consumers can say they are confident but we get retail sales on Monday at 8:30 and business inventories at 10 which will see if they are walking the walk. PPI Tues, CPI Weds both reflecting a month of near $80 oil. Production and utilization on Weds better be stunning to get us through expiration week without a plunge and Thursday morning we get housing data and the Philly Fed. All things to consider just 7 days ahead of expiration!

This is a good time to remind people that I massively disapprove of holding Aug contracts at this point other than those you’ve sold to some poor schmuck who’s watching his premium evaporate. It’s a great time to sell Aug puts and calls for the premiums though as the VIX is (hopefully) unsustainable at this level, which reminds me that I like the May $20 puts for $3.20, selling the Sept $18 puts against 3/4 for .95 XXX

Also worth noting – Ellyn McColgan, who was supposed to be the successor to manage $1.7T Fidelity Investments, QUIT! I’d really want a satisfactory explanation of what it would take to get someone to walk away from that job with a 77 year-old director inches away from retirement.

CSCO report good for Skype I think.

Asia is in a SUPER mood this morning – Japan banks (MTU up 2.6%) making a big comeback while they totally ignore a 10.4% drop in machinery orders in Japan. Hang Seng opened up 350 and stayed there so far while the Nikkei has been stepping up since the open (now lunch).

BBD – actually I like this a lot as I am big on studying Asian and European market movements and a play by play really beats the summary mode! I’m already envisioning having the Europe and Asia feeds put on TIVO once I get the fund running so I can run them along with the silly US pre-market coverage and be all caught up by noon (as I usually start my day at 4). I still think global information is tremendously underutilized by analysts – perhaps because it’s just too many data points for most people to keep track of or perhaps it is just laziness, either way it seems like an opportunity to me!

“In June 2004, the Fed began to raise the short-term target rate, eventually taking it to 5.25%, where it has been for the past year. Such a boost usually leads to a rise, as well, in long-term rates, which are important to rates on 30-year conventional mortgages and corporate bonds. This time, it didn’t. Mr. Greenspan expressed concern that investors were willing to accept low returns for taking on risk. “What they perceive as newly abundant liquidity can readily disappear,” he said in August 2005, six months before retiring. “History has not dealt kindly with the aftermath of protracted periods of low risk premiums.”

    Greenspans confession.

Money not accumulating interest is a waste of money, i think this drying of the well will lead to other opportunities. There are billions of dollars in oil money looking for a home. Do oil countries build infrastructure…NO they look for investments outside their respective countries. What ever reason they find they will use, and this market goes higher. After all the nervous neely’s get washed out.

China has an interest in propping up the dollar, keeps their exports cheap, tough talk is all it is and how tough of a stance can we take since China keeps this boat afloat? Last thing China wants is a global recession. I HOPE.
