(UPDATE: Amazon has confirmed the purchase of Twitch. The purchase price is around $970 million in cash.)
Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) is reportedly on the verge of acquiring the privately held video game streaming service called Twitch for $1 billion.
A deal “could be announced shortly,” according the website information.com, which cited unnamed sources that said the company’s are in “late stage” talks.
The story marks a sharp departure for the rumor mill, which has been abuzz for months that Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOGL) YouTube is on the verge of signing the same $1 billion deal with Twitch, a video game streaming service formerly called Justin.TV.
Variety said in May that the Google deal would be all cash and announced “imminently.”
The Google story resurfaced late last month and was said to have signed a definitive agreement with Twitch.
