According to Dow Jones, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) is in discussions to buy Mojang AB, the Swedish company behind the popular "Minecraft" video game, according to a person knowledgeable in the matter.
The deal would be valued at more than $2 billion and could be signed as early as this week, the person said.
If true, Mojang would be the first big acquisition by Microsoft's chief executive, Satya Nadella, who was named CEO in February.
"Minecraft" could refresh Microsoft's Xbox video game business by providing content for young fans and users, although Nadella previously stated Xbox wasn't a core business for Microsoft.
A Microsoft spokesman declined to comment, as did Mojang.
Shares of Microsoft were fractionally higher at $46.90.
