Traders Storm Netflix Weeklies As Shares Continue To Tank

Today’s tickers: NFLX, BIIB, DG & DWA

NFLX - Netflix, Inc. – The bloodbath at Netflix accelerated Thursday afternoon, with shares in the provider of subscription streaming service down 13.0% at $110.59 as of 2:00 pm in New York. Investors began purging their portfolios of NFLX more aggressively in recent weeks, but the stock’s pull back began in July. Shares peaked at an all-time high of $304.79 on July 13, and have since lost nearly 65.0% of their value. Frenzied trading in NFLX weekly options that have one more day of trading left before expiration suggest we may see the stock extend losses through the end of the week. While trading in Sept. ’30 contract calls and puts is mixed across the board, it does appear that bearish positions are more prevalent today. Certainly, the surge in demand for deep out-of-the-money puts on the stock is a sign of the times. More than 2,300 puts changed hands at the Sept. ’30 $100 strike against open interest of 621 contracts. Buyers of at least 930 of the contracts paid an average premium of $0.24 each this afternoon. Sept. ’30 $115 puts are the most active, with volume in excess of 10,100 contracts in play. Buyers of the now deep in-the-money contracts outnumbered sellers, and purchased around 3,800 of the puts for an average premium of $2.05 a-pop. The cost of protective puts on Netflix have climbed steadily throughout the session, helped by the hemorrhaging in its shares, and the more than 15.4% surge in implied volatility to 89.5% today. Options volume on the stock is fast approaching 155,000 contracts as of 2:15 pm EDT.

Bears Plunder Nokia Call Options

Today’s tickers: NOK, DG, ESV & OREX

NOK - Nokia Corp. – When Nokia yesterday announced that it was no longer meaningful to offer a forecast into its murky future, investors abandoned the stock driving it into new lower territory. We noticed frenzied options activity as investors reaped what premium they could from fast-falling call options. The dire nature of Nokia’s warning has left option traders with little doubt that its shares will flounder further in coming weeks. Bearish option traders wrote off at-the-money $7.00 call options expiring in just three weeks’ time for just 20 cents each. The question facing option bears seems to be not whether the shares will rebound but how far they will sink in the days ahead. On Wednesday the picture weakened with shares sliding by a further 7% to $6.50 while it appears that call options are once again being sold, but this time at lower strikes. Investors appeared to turn their attention to the $6.00 strike where volume of 3,000 built by mid-morning. Open interest of a mere 300 lots confirms that new positions are being taken. We saw at least 1,000 contracts clear the prevailing 59-cent bid on our screens. Sellers also decimated the premium available on July $7.00 strike calls with some 9,000 contract being traded Wednesday where premiums have halved to just 18-cents on the day. Investors seem convinced that Nokia’s fortunes look dire.

DG - Dollar General Corp. – The discount retailer missed Wall Street’s expectation for earnings when it reported its first quarter data of 48 cents. The Street was hoping for 50 cents. The seller of all-fine-things-for-less-than-$10 said it took losses on certain slow-to-clear items and said that shoppers were constrained by rising gas prices. It nevertheless stood by its full year estimate and continues to revise store…

Put Sellers Target Dollar General Corp.

Today’s tickers: DG, CBRL, M, TSN, NFLX & FUQI

DG - Dollar General Corp. – Shares in Dollar General Corp. rallied as much as 4.1% this afternoon to touch an intraday- and new 52-week high of $32.23 after fellow discount retailer, Dollar Tree, reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings this morning. Dollar General appeared on our scanners after bullish players sold out-of-the-money put options in the December contract. Put sellers are suggesting shares in DG are likely to trade above $30.00 through expiration day next month. Dollar General reports third-quarter earnings ahead of the opening bell on December 9, 2010. Options traders sold more than 14,200 puts at the December $30 strike to pocket an average premium of $0.18 per contract. Put sellers keep the full premium received on the transaction as long as DG’s shares exceed $30.00 through December expiration. More than 16,000 put options changed hands at the December $30 strike versus paltry previously existing open interest of just 7 contracts at that strike. Overall options volume of 16,535 contracts generated on Dollar General today is far greater than total existing open interest on the stock of 10,451 lots before today. Options implied volatility on Dollar General is down 8.5% to arrive at 23.88% in late afternoon trading.

CBRL - Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. – Near-term call options are in demand on the operator of retail and restaurant concept chain, Cracker Barrel, this afternoon. Shares in Cracker Barrel jumped 3.00% to $57.77, a new 52-week high for the stock, by 3:45 pm in New York. It looks like call buyers populating CBRL today expect shares to extend gains following the firm’s first-quarter earnings report before the opening bell tomorrow. Bulls scooped up roughly 1,100 calls at the December $60 strike for an average premium of $0.735 per contract. Investors…

The Wall Street Journal on the business of high frequency trading:

A costly high-tech arms race in which HFT firms relentlessly compete to shave tiny fractions of a second off data transmission times has also hurt their bottom lines.

Revenue at HFT firms from U.S. equities trading is projected to be just $850 million this year, compared to $7.2 billion in revenue from U.S. stocks trading in 2009, Tabb Group says.

Techniques pioneered by the upstart traders are now common at old-line financial firms. Goldman Sachs, for example, had 600 human traders supporting its cash eq...

The Entire Medical Industry Is About To Change

By The Sovereign Investor. Originally published at ValueWalk.

The doctor straightened and pulled the stethoscope from her ears. “I don’t hear anything on the right side.”

Sometimes silence is a good sign. When it comes to listening to my husband breathing, it’s not.

One quick X-ray later and we discover that his right lung had collapsed. There was also air putting pressure on his left lung.

The fix was easy. The doctor inserted a slender tube into his chest, sucking out the air. His lung reinflated in a matter of minutes.

I caught the doctor later and asked her why this had happened. When the pain started, he’d been watching TV.

She shrugged and admitted that sometimes it was just something that happened to men who are tall and thin.

Of course, the answer to the question of “How do we avoid this?”...

Ukrainian Lawmakers Disclose $45 Million In Bitcoin Holdings

Courtesy of ZeroHedge. View original post here.

As Ukraine's crackdown on corruption continues, three lawmakers from Ukraine’s ruling party revealed this week that they own a combined $45 million in bitcoin, according to a report by RIA Novosti, a Russian foreign news service.

Their holdings came to light during mandatory financial disclosures by members of the Ukrainian parliament, part of an IMF-approved strategy to tamp down corruption in Ukraine. The country's democratic institutions, which were never very robust to begin with, have been further destabilized by...

The App Economy Will Be Worth $6 Trillion in Five Years

This would be excellent news for AAPL and GOOG to a lesser extent although not inconsequential:

The App Economy Will Be Worth $6 Trillion in Five Years

In five years, the app economy will be worth $6.3 trillion, up from $1.3 trillion last year, according to a report released today by app measurement company App Annie. What explains the growth? More people are spending more time and -- crucially -- more money in apps. While on average people aren't downloading many more apps, App Annie expects global app usership to nearly double to 6.3 billion people in the next five years while the time spent in apps will more than double. And, it expects the...
