Earnings Beat Spurs Lively Trade In Schlumberger Options

Today’s tickers: SLB, BSX, PSS & IFF

SLB - Schlumberger Ltd. – Shares in the world’s largest oilfield-services provider shot up 3.6% to $94.28 today after the company revealed better-than-expected earnings for the second quarter. Schlumberger said profits in the quarter increased 64% on rising crude prices, which spurred more onshore drilling on U.S. soil. Options traders appear to be employing numerous strategies on the stock, from profit-taking to fresh bullish positioning, across several expiries. Trading traffic is heaviest in the front month, where at least one investor likely raked in substantial profits post-earnings report. It looks like the trader originally purchased a 2,500-lot August $87.5/$92.5 call spread at a net cost of $2.30 per contract on Wednesday when SLB shares were trading around $88.48. The sharp rally in the price of the underlying in the past couple of days sent call premium skyward, and it looks like the investor sold the spread today at a net $3.63 per contract. Matching up net premium paid initially against that received today yields net profits of $1.33 per contract or around $332,500 in just a few days. Meanwhile, an investor betting on continued gains in shares of Schlumberger through September expiration appears to have enacted a three-legged ratio spread on the stock. The trader sold 1,000 puts at the September $85 strike for a premium of $1.32 each, purchased 1,000 in-the-money calls at the September $92.5 strike at a premium of $4.75 apiece, and sold 2,000 calls up at the September $100 strike for a premium of $1.56 a-pop. The transaction cost a net $0.31 per contract and makes the most money for the trader if shares in SLB jump more than 6.0% to settle at $100.00 at September expiration. Options implied volatility on SLB is down 13.9% to arrive at 25.88% in early-afternoon trade.…

Bulls Take the Wheel, Initiate Recovery Plays Using Ford Options

Today’s tickers: F, TOL, BRCD, LOW, NUAN, WAG & IFF

F - Ford Motor Co. – The automaker’s shares edged 2.45% lower this afternoon to $15.80, but investors expecting to see Ford rebound and rally in the next few months initiated bullish plays using put and call options expiring in February 2011. It looks like one trader purchased a bull call spread, while another investor put on a bullish risk reversal. The call spreader picked up 5,000 contracts at the February 2011 $16 strike for a premium of $1.24 each, and sold the same number of calls at the higher February 2011 $20 strike for a premium of $0.20 apiece. Net premium paid to establish the spread amounts to $1.04 per contract. Thus, the responsible party is prepared to make money should shares in Ford Motor Co. surge 7.85% over the current price of $15.80 to surpass the effective breakeven point at $17.04 by February expiration. The call-spreader could end up walking away with maximum potential profits of $2.96 per contract if Ford’s shares jump 26.6% to trade above $20.00 by expiration day next year. The other bullish play in the February 2011 contract appears to be the work of an investor selling 1,990 February 2011 $15 strike puts at a premium of $0.69 each in order to purchase the same number of February 2011 $18 strike calls for a premium of $0.50 a-pop. The transaction results in a net credit of $0.19 per contract, which the investor keeps as long as shares in Ford exceed $15.00 through expiration. Additional profits start to accrue for the trader should shares rally 13.9% to trade above $18.00 before the contracts expire. The net credit received by the investor provides limited downside protection should shares continue to head south. The investor will face losses, however, if Ford’s shares trade below the effective breakeven price of $14.81 in the next few months to expiration.…

Exploring Gravitational Waves

By joniferdingcong. Originally published at ValueWalk.

In 2016, US scientists for the first time announced their detection of gravitational waves, ripples in space and time hypothesized by Albert Einstein a century ago. Such a discovery represents a scientific breakthrough, opening the door to an entirely new way of observing the cosmos. In 2017, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three US scientists for the detection of gravitational waves. To better grasp the process of their discovery, CGTN’s Tian Wei spoke to two of them: Rainer Weiss, Emeritus Professor of Physics at MIT and Kip Thorne, Emeritus Professor of Physics at Caltech. Chen Yanbei, Professor of Physics at Caltech, also joined the talk.

If you invested in the markets circa 1999, it is hard to observe the Bitcoin mania and not experience the feeling that you’ve seen this movie before and know how it will end – in losses and tears. The internet was a great idea that convinced a lot of great minds to invest capital and energy into businesses that have transformed the world – Amazon, eBay, Cisco, PayPal … the list is very long (though in fairness the list of non-survivors is even longer – but they are not here to remind us of their nonexistence).

The Nasdaq 100 breakout cleared channel resistance, the fifth significant breakout in four months. All technicals are posting new near-term highs which also meant the short generated on the tag of the rising channel is negated.

The Semiconductor Index also enjoyed a substantial breakout as short covering drove traders out of their positions. Technicals see an improvement with a relative gain against the Nasdaq 100.
