Politics

Why D.C. Hates Ted Cruz (The Atlantic)

In the three years since he arrived in the U.S. Senate, Ted Cruz has become easily the most hated man in Washington—a fact he’s now using to his advantage as a presidential candidate. But why?

Is it true, as Cruz would have it, that the dreaded GOP establishment pays lip service to shrinking the federal government and repealing Obamacare, but actually would prefer to preserve the status quo? Is it simply personal animosity? Or do Cruz’s Beltway critics have a point?

This Republican says ‘malleable’ Donald Trump is more electable than ‘rigid’ Ted Cruz (Market Watch)

Who’s more electable: Ted Cruz or Donald Trump? For one centrist leader among congressional Republicans, the answer’s clear.

“Ted Cruz is a rigid ideologue,” Rep. Charlie Dent, a Pennsylvania Republican, told the New York Times. Dent isn’t supporting Trump and hasn’t endorsed a candidate in the 2016 presidential race. But he added: “Donald Trump is ideologically scattered and malleable. In my view, a more rigid ideology would have a much harder time assembling a winning general election coalition than the less doctrinaire candidate.” Cruz, the Texas Republican senator, and Trump, the billionaire real-estate mogul, are in the final days of campaigning before squaring off against each other and other Republicans in the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1.

Breastfeeding and Formula Feeding Moms Both Need Support, OBGYNs Say (Forbes)

The updated policy statement of the largest organization of OBGYNs makes a remarkable — yet long overdue — shift in its recommendations for breastfeeding: the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists still recommends and “strongly encourages” mothers to breastfeed exclusively for at least 6 months and up to a year with complementary foods, but OBGYNs should *also* support a woman’s decision NOT to breastfeed if she chooses.

Why do people put on differing amounts of weight? (BBC)

Foods that make some of us put on weight can have little effect on others, according to research being carried out in Israel. It might be time to rethink the way we diet, writes Dr Saleyha Ashan.

Like most of the population, I must admit that I am on an eternal quest to lose weight. For me it's more to do with concerns about health than aesthetics. I have polycystic ovary syndrome and a family history of type 2 diabetes and that puts me into a high risk category for developing diabetes myself.

How to Manage Europe's Refugee Emergency (Bloomberg View)

Governments are struggling to balance two conflicting commitments — one to honor genuine requests for asylum, as they are bound by treaty and by common decency to do, and the other to limit the flood of refugees to a level their citizens will tolerate.
