American Nihilism and Hope

It is widely accepted that America is fundamentally fractured, and there is no shortage of books diagnosing the causes of our wobbling solidarity. Despite this mood of loss, even despair, most of these books maintain the typically American can-do spirit—they’re proposals as much as diagnostics. If only we can fix the Court, or the administrative state, or have a better class of elites, or rebuild civil society, or share meals with our neighbors, or establish shared sentiments of civic friendship, we can reform and rebuild and recover.
