China: China’s “artificial sun” reaches new milestone toward near-limitless fusion energy

Storyline: China’s “artificial sun” reaches new milestone toward near-limitless fusion energy [Voice_over] Officials from the China National Nuclear Corporation have announced a milestone at their Huanliu-3 nuclear fusion facility in southwest China’s Sichuan Province. The so-called artificial sun has achieved temperatures exceeding 100 million Celsius for both atomic nuclei and electrons, marking a significant leap in performance parameters for the tokamak. Nuclear fusion energy is the same energy the powers the sun. If created in a controlled environment, it could provide limitless, clean energy. [Sound_bite] Zhong Wulyu, Chief designer, Huanliu-3 experiment: “Today, we achieved the ‘double 100 million degrees Celsius temperature’ targets in our experiment, with the comprehensive parameters showing significant improvement. It means that our country’s nuclear fusion research has now entered the burning plasma experiment stage. Our self-developed heating, control, and diagnostic equipment and systems have been put into operation for the first time, with the relevant technical indicators now reaching the forefront of the world, setting new records in our country’s nuclear fusion research.” [Voice_over] With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, which requires a tremendous amount of energy to function, the global race is on to develop nuclear fusion’s clean, limit-less energy for mass consumption.
