Chocolate eggs and rosaries: Pope Francis meets U.S. Vice President Vance on Easter Sunday | Catholic News AgencyDown we go again!

Pope Francis: Champion of the downtrodden, thorn in the side of Donald Trump’s administration, and a man who’d recently clawed his way back from the brink of death, met his untimely end less than 24 hours after a face-to-face with Vice President JD Vance. Coincidence? Probably. But as every good conspiracy theorist knows, “probably” is just the establishment’s way of saying “look the other way.” So, let’s not. Let’s dive headfirst into this rabbit hole of papal proportions and see where it leads.

The Setup: A Pope on the Mend Meets a Policy Maverick

Pope Francis, at 88 years young, had been through the wringer. Double pneumonia had kept him hospitalized for over five weeks, a ordeal that would’ve felled lesser mortals. But by mid-April 2025, the pontiff was on the mend. Discharged from the hospital, he’d even started making public appearances again, his frail frame buoyed by a renewed sense of purpose. The Vatican buzzed with optimism. Francis was back, ready to keep fighting the good fight.

Enter JD Vance, the freshly minted Vice President and a recent Catholic convert, who rolled into Rome with his family for Easter Sunday, April 20th 2025. The two met at the Domus Santa Marta, the Pope’s modest residence, for what the Vatican called a “brief exchange of Easter greetings.” It was a quick affair: smiles, handshakes, and a gift from the Pope – three oversized chocolate Easter eggs for Vance’s kids, plus a Vatican tie and some rosaries. Vance, ever the polite politician, thanked the Pope, saying, “I pray for you every day. God bless you,” before heading off into the Roman sunshine.

Sounds wholesome, right? A recovering Pope and a VP sharing Easter cheer. But hold onto your tinfoil hats, because less than 24 hours later, on April 21st, Pope Francis was dead. Natural causes, they say. His age, his illness, his five-week hospital stint – sure, that’s the official story. But what if there’s more to it? What if that meeting wasn’t so innocent after all?

Not often I agree with the Catholic church. : r/PoliticalHumorThe Conspiracy: A Chocolate-Coated Cover-Up?

Here’s where the plot thickens faster than a Vatican vespers hymn. Pope Francis wasn’t just any old pontiff, he was a vocal critic of the Trump administration, particularly its hardline immigration policies. Just weeks before his hospitalization, he’d fired off a letter to U.S. bishops, slamming deportation plans as a “disgrace” and subtly jabbing at Vance’s theological defense of them. Vance, you see, had leaned on the concept of “ordo amoris(a fancy way of saying “love your own first”) to justify the administration’s stance at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in February. The Pope wasn’t having it, and their ideological clash was no secret.

Picture this: Easter Sunday, a fragile but feisty Pope meets the VP who’s been thumbing his nose at papal pleas for compassion. Maybe it wasn’t the chocolate eggs that did him in – those were for Vance’s kids, after all – but what about the stress of it all? A tense exchange over border walls and deportations, a raised voice or two, and suddenly the Pope’s ticker can’t take it. Or perhaps Vance, with that smooth Ohio charm, slipped a sly threat into his “God bless you” – something like, “Enjoy your Easter, Your Holiness… while it lasts.

The timing is just too perfect. Francis had been getting better, making appearances, defying the odds. Then, bam, one quick chat with Vance, and he’s gone. Coincidence? Or did the VP bring something more than Easter greetings to the Vatican that day?

The Evidence: Facts That Fuel the Fire

Let’s stack up the facts—because even the wildest conspiracies need a little meat on their bones:
  • The Pope’s Health: Francis had double pneumonia, sure, but he’d been discharged and was back in action. His doctors had him on a light schedule, yet he still met Vance. Why risk it?
  • The Meeting: Reported as “brief” by the Vatican, but brief doesn’t mean benign. Video footage shows a smiling Pope and a courteous Vance, but smiles can hide a multitude of sins and Vance got close enough to pass on a full spectrum of life-ending pathogens to the pontiff.
  • The Timing: Dead within 24 hours. That’s not a statistic you can ignore. The Pope’s been frail for years, yet it’s this moment – post-Vance – THAT does him in?
  • The Motive: Francis’s criticism of Trump’s policies, including Vance’s defense of them, gave the administration plenty of reason to want him quiet. A vocal Pope rallying Catholics against deportations? Bad for business.
Drawing Board: JD Vance - The Press DemocratMaybe Vance didn’t poison the Pope’s tea (though we’re not ruling it out this early into the investigation), but his mere presence, his steely gaze, his unwavering loyalty to Trump, could’ve been enough to tip the scales. Stress kills after all, and who’s more stressful to people than JD Vance?

The Counterpoint: Or Just Another Day at the Vatican?

Of course, the naysayers – those buzzkills in sensible shoes – will point to the obvious: Pope Francis was 88, sick as a dog, and lucky to have lasted as long as he did. His death was a tragedy, not a thriller. The meeting with Vance? A footnote, a polite gesture, nothing more. The Vatican’s own reports confirm it was all above board, and medical experts would likely chalk his passing up to pneumonia’s lingering toll, not some cloak-and-dagger nonsense.

But where’s the fun in that? Why settle for the mundane when you can imagine a world where JD Vance, armed with a rosary and a grudge, takes down the Pope in a plot twist worthy of a Netflix special? Sure, it’s probably a coincidence. Probably. But as we’ve learned from every conspiracy worth its salt, “probably” is just the beginning and Tom Hanks has been itching to make another Vatican movie!

17 Really Fun Pope Francis MemesAnyway, all kidding aside, I have been amazed by Pope Francis, he was a man of true conviction. His life was a testament to the power of humility and compassion, qualities that defined his papacy and touched the hearts of millions, restoring our faith in the Church (and, as a Jew, I mean for all faiths). From the moment he stepped onto the global stage, he showed us what it meant to lead with a servant’s heart, choosing simplicity over grandeur and empathy over judgment.

Pope Francis stood out as a champion for the marginalized, tirelessly advocating for the poor, the forgotten, and the vulnerable. His emphasis on mercy and love echoed the teachings of Christ, reminding us that faith is not just a doctrine but A CALL TO ACTION! He faced the world’s challenges: be it Climate Change, Social Injustice, or the struggles of a Global Pandemic – with a courage that inspired us to look beyond ourselves and work for the common good.

The Pope’s leadership was not confined to the walls of the Vatican. He reached out across faiths and cultures, building bridges where division once stood. As Francis said “ALL religions are paths to God.” His voice carried a Universal message of Peace, urging us to care for our planet and for one another. In every gesture, from washing the feet of prisoners to comforting the sick, he showed that true strength lies in tenderness.

As Trump consolidates his power, he no longer feels the need to pretend he’s religious and, though he was up at 5:46 am rage-tweeting to the masses – he did not feel the need to attend Church yesterday as he hit the links at his Virginia Golf Club.

Over the holiday weekend, the news cycle threw a tantrum. China did not waste any time, issuing stern warnings about “countermeasures” against any nation dumb enough to back the U.S. in this trade pressure circus. Nothing screams “winning” like poking a global superpower with a stick and hoping it doesn’t poke back.

USD Chart Daily

Investors, predictably, freaked out, sending the Dollar sliding all the way down to 98 and Gold soaring past $3,400 – classic signs that they are running for the hills and stuffing their mattresses with anything shiny – even BitCoin, which jumped back to $87,000 per thing…

Then there’s Trump’s ongoing feud with the Federal Reserve, because why let an independent body do its job when you can yell at it instead? Trump has been lobbing attacks at the Fed while Powell tries to keep a straight face and point out the obvious: Tariffs mean higher inflation and slower growth!

But sure, let’s keep pretending this is all part of some genius master plan. The Fed’s stuck in “wait-and-see” mode, probably because they’re tired of playing whack-a-mole with the Administration’s chaos and the fallout is not just for the big shots. From beauty brands to Chinatown markets, everyone is bracing for the tariff hammer, proving this trade war is going to be an equal-opportunity wrecking ball. Word on the street is Trump only softened his tariff stance after his own bond holdings got jittery – which is why he was so mad at Powell. Nothing says “putting America first” like tweaking national policy to protect your personal piggy bank, right?

Meanwhile, Wall Street is whispering about a recession that the market hasn’t “fully priced in” yet. In other words, we might be in more trouble than the Earnings Reports and Conference Calls this quarter are admitting. About 1/3 of guidance has been pulled so far as companies don’t really know what the policies are going to be but no guidance is certainly not good guidance – as a rule of thumb…

The market’s already choppy, with stocks plunging as Powell weighs in and tech giants like Nvidia take a nosedive, all while the Administration’s “tough on trade” bravado keeps rippling through the business world like a bad case of indigestion and, this weekend, China has threatened to retaliate against countries that sign Trade Deals with Trump that put China at a disadvantage – more wood on the Global dumpster fire! As you can see from the chart above, the tariff pause bought us until July but a 2/3 chance of Recession when the tariffs are scheduled to be reinstated.

The stock market tanking this morning because the weekend gave us a fresh dose of Trade Tension, Fed Bashing and Economic Uncertainty, all courtesy of an Administration that’s “making America great again” one market meltdown at a time.

We have 9 Fed speeches this week packed around hundreds of Billions of Dollars worth of Note Auctions and God help us if those don’t go well (and why would they with the Dollar dropping another 1.5% since Friday?) and, don’t forget – we’re between popes – so praying might not help!

Leading Indicators today, Richmond Fed and Money Supply tomorrow (watch out for liquidity issues!), Wednesday it’s PPI, Atlanta Fed and the Beige Book, Thursday we have Durable Goods, Chicago Fed, Home Sales and the 7-year Auction and Friday it’s Consumer Sentiment – that could be awful:

And, of course, we have earnings – lots and lots of earnings.  It should be an exciting week:

The most anticipated earnings releases for the week of April 21, 2025 are Tesla #TSLA, Intel #INTC, Alphabet #GOOGL, O'Reilly Automotive #ORLY, Verizon Communications #VZ, Alaska Air #ALK, Celestica #CLS, Boeing #BA, American Airlines #AAL, and Freeport-McMoRan #FCX.
