Cheap Upside Calls Change Hands On General Motors Co.

Today’s tickers: GM, FRAN & FDO

GM - General Motors Co. – Trading traffic in weekly options on General Motors today indicates some traders are positioning for shares in the automaker to rise to the highest level since Valentine’s Day during the next couple of trading sessions. Shares in GM are near their highs of the day, up 2.0% at $28.67 as of 11:40 a.m. in New York. The most actively traded weekly contracts as measured by volume on Wednesday morning are the Mar. 22 ’13 $29 strike call options, with upwards of 4,500 contracts in play versus zero open positions. It looks like most of the calls were purchased at a premium of $0.05 apiece. Call buyers stand ready to profit at expiration later this week should shares in GM rally another 1.3% to settle above the average breakeven point at $29.05. Traders long the calls at $0.05 per contract have seen the value of the contracts double this morning, with the options currently changing hands at $0.11 each as of 11:45 a.m. ET. Bullish bets are also on the rise at the April $29 strike, with around 900 calls purchased for an average premium of $0.49 per contract. Shares in General Motors are down roughly 2.5% since the start of 2013.

FRAN - Francesca’s Holdings Corp. – Shares in Francesca’s jumped 10.5% to $29.80 on Wednesday morning after the retailer of women’s apparel and accessories reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings after the close on Tuesday. The sharp move in the price of the underlying shares sparked heavy options activity on the stock today, with volume topping 4,500 lots by midday on the East Coast versus average daily volume of around 1,600 contracts. Most of the activity is in April and May expiry put options, with some traders positioning for shares in Francesca’s to potentially pullback in the near term. The April $25 strike put options traded 1,300 times on Wednesday morning, and appear to have been mostly purchased at an average premium of $0.45 each. Similarly, the…

Bearish Positions On The Rise In Wells Fargo Options

Today’s tickers: WFC, SNE & FRAN

WFC - Wells Fargo & Co. – Put activity on Wells Fargo this morning suggests some traders are positioning for shares in the name to decline next week. The put-to-call ratio on WFC is greater than 9-to-1 at present, with most of the volume building in the June puts with one week remaining to expiration. The stock is currently down 1.0% at $30.86, trading lower along with a number of the other big banks as markets await further news out of Europe. Put volume is heaviest at the Jun. $30 strike where more than 32,000 contracts have changed hands against open interest of 6,877 positions. Traders appear to have purchased most of the $30 puts for an average premium of $0.26 apiece and may profit at expiration if WFC shares decline another 3.6% to breach the average breakeven price of $29.74.

SNE - Sony Corp. – Call buying on the electronics producer this morning appears to be a medium-term bet that shares in Sony Corp. may rebound somewhat during the next four months. Shares in the electronics producer have been hammered this year, selling down to levels last seen in the 1980s. Sony’s shares are struggling again today, slipping 3.75% to $12.81 in the first half of the session. One or more traders driving up volume in October expiry call options are prepared to benefit should the stock reverse course. More than 4,500 calls changed hands at the Oct. $14 strike against open interest of 1,966 contracts. It looks like traders purchased most of the calls for an average premium of $1.08 apiece and stand ready to profit at expiration should Sony’s shares rally 17.7% to top the average breakeven price of $15.08.

FRAN - Francescas Holdings Corp. – Shares in the specialty retailer of…

CVS, Walgreens Shares Slide As Amazon Files International Trademarks For Pharmacy Business

Courtesy of ZeroHedge

Amazon has just taken another step in its assault of the pharmacy industry. Since the company acquired PillPack, a disruptive online pharmacy, back in 2018, pharmacy mainstays like CVS and Walgreens Boots Alliance have been rattled by the e-commerce and cloud-computing giant's move into their territory. Their shares dipped on Tuesday as CNBC reported that Amazon had just filed trademarks for its 'Amazon Pharmacy' brand in several foreign markets, including Australia, Canada and the UK.

Amazon unveiled its plans to rebrand PillPack as 'Amazon Pharmacy' late last year, signaling to the market that it intended to pursue its pharmacy aims despite a high bar set by regulators in the US.

The problem with selling pharmaceutic...

SP500 Kitchin Cycle Review

Courtesy of Read the Ticker

The biggest known news date in the next 18 months is the US Election. The biggest unknown news date is when the US believes it is in a economic recession.

The Kitchin Cycle is still working.

We must conclude the major 900 period low is now in, and we are now in a up swing, which may top out ate 2020 or late 2021. Any future top out may only generate a 10% to 20% correction, of course this can be deemed very mild. This is expected, but the expected does always play out.

Rolling the dice to get '7' does not always work. Post US elections seasonal's aligned with a poor start of the decade seasonal trends, add on high global recession risk, add on a stock market slump tends to occur in the years ending 9,1,2,3,4 (like 1973, 1...
