Bullish Action Detected In Macy’s Options Ahead Of Earnings Next Week

Today’s tickers: M, FSYS & TMUS

M - Macy’s Inc. – Call options changing hands on Macy’s during morning trading suggests at least one strategist is taking a bullish stance on the stock ahead of the retailer’s second-quarter earnings report next Wednesday. Shares in the name are slightly in the red today, down 0.20% at $47.74 just before midday in New York. The stock has slipped roughly 6.0% in recent weeks from a record high of $50.77 reached back in July. Trading traffic in Aug $48.5 strike calls initiated during the first 10 minutes of the session indicates one trader is preparing for shares to move higher ahead of expiration next week. It looks like the strategist purchased 1,500 of the $48.5 calls for a premium of $0.76 apiece. The bullish position makes money at expiration in the event that Macy’s shares rise more than 3.0% to exceed the breakeven price of $49.26.

FSYS - Fuel Systems Solutions, Inc. – Shares in Fuel Systems are soaring on Thursday, rising nearly 23% to touch a new 52-week high of $21.44, after the company posted better than expected second-quarter earnings ahead of the opening bell this morning. Options traders positioning for the price of the underlying to extend gains in the near term snapped up August expiry calls in the early going. The most traded front month options are the Aug $21 strike calls, with upwards of 870 lots in play versus open interest of 286 contracts. Time and sales data indicates most of the volume was purchased during the first 10 minutes of the session for an average premium of $0.30 apiece. Call buyers stand ready to profit at expiration next week in the event that FSYS shares settle above the average breakeven price of $21.30. Intraday gains in the price of the…

Bank of America Bearish Option Position Closed – Shares Rally

Today’s tickers: BAC, MCD, ADM, XRT, CVS, STT, PFE, CVS, FSYS & AEO

BAC – Bank of America Corp. – One investor banked profits today by unraveling a massive bearish credit spread established back on October 28, 2009. The trader’s decision to take profits ahead of expiration could be a bullish sign for BAC. Shares are trading up 2% near the end of the trading day to stand at $15.00. The investor originally sold approximately 130,000 calls at the November 16 strike for an average premium of 49 cents apiece, spread against the purchase of the same number of calls at the higher November 17.5 strike for 15 cents each. The trader received a net credit of 34 cents per contract on the transaction. Today, the investor left money on the table by closing out ahead of expiration. It appears he sold the upper strike calls for 4 pennies and bought back the lower strike calls for 19 cents apiece. Net profits received for unraveling the spread amount to 19 cents per contract for a total of $2.47 million. One might interpret such a decision as a bullish signal for BAC because the trader decided to walk away with 19 cents – half of the maximum profit potential of 34 cents. The investor would only have been able to retain the full 34 cents if shares traded beneath $16.00 through expiration day in November.

MCD – McDonald’s Corp. – A bullish risk reversal in the January 2010 contract significantly reduced the price paid by one investor establishing an optimistic stance on the fast-food chain. Shares of MCD are trading 1.5% higher today to $61.20 despite yesterday’s downgrade to ‘hold’ by analysts at EVA Dimensions. The investor sold 13,000 put options at the January 60 strike for an average premium of 1.91 apiece to partially offset the cost of purchasing 13,000 in-the-money calls at the same strike for 2.51 each. The net cost of the reversal amounts to 60 cents per contract.

ADM – Archer Daniels Midland Co. – Food products company, Archer Daniels Midland, jumped onto our ‘most active by options volume’ market scanner this afternoon due to bullish activity in the March 2010 contract. Shares edged 0.5% higher to $32.37 during the trading session after the firm revealed better-than-expected first-quarter profits of 77 cents per share. One investor sold out-of-the-money put options to partially finance the purchase of a…

2019 Is 5th Consecutive Year With No Operating Profit Growth

Courtesy of ZeroHedge View original post here.

Submitted by Joe Carson, former Chief Economist & Director of Global Economic Research for Alliance Bernstein

2019 operating profits will show no growth for the 5th consecutive year. That would mark the longest stretch of no earnings growth since the late 1990s. Prospects for 2020-profit growth look slim as well given consensus GDP growth estimates of around 2%, slow global growth and rising costs pressure from labor.

Q4 GDP and the full year 2019 operating profit numbers will not be released until March, but one...
