Put Sellers Target Dollar General Corp.

Today’s tickers: DG, CBRL, M, TSN, NFLX & FUQI

DG - Dollar General Corp. – Shares in Dollar General Corp. rallied as much as 4.1% this afternoon to touch an intraday- and new 52-week high of $32.23 after fellow discount retailer, Dollar Tree, reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings this morning. Dollar General appeared on our scanners after bullish players sold out-of-the-money put options in the December contract. Put sellers are suggesting shares in DG are likely to trade above $30.00 through expiration day next month. Dollar General reports third-quarter earnings ahead of the opening bell on December 9, 2010. Options traders sold more than 14,200 puts at the December $30 strike to pocket an average premium of $0.18 per contract. Put sellers keep the full premium received on the transaction as long as DG’s shares exceed $30.00 through December expiration. More than 16,000 put options changed hands at the December $30 strike versus paltry previously existing open interest of just 7 contracts at that strike. Overall options volume of 16,535 contracts generated on Dollar General today is far greater than total existing open interest on the stock of 10,451 lots before today. Options implied volatility on Dollar General is down 8.5% to arrive at 23.88% in late afternoon trading.

CBRL - Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. – Near-term call options are in demand on the operator of retail and restaurant concept chain, Cracker Barrel, this afternoon. Shares in Cracker Barrel jumped 3.00% to $57.77, a new 52-week high for the stock, by 3:45 pm in New York. It looks like call buyers populating CBRL today expect shares to extend gains following the firm’s first-quarter earnings report before the opening bell tomorrow. Bulls scooped up roughly 1,100 calls at the December $60 strike for an average premium of $0.735 per contract. Investors…

Bears Descend on Genoptix as Shares Nosedive

Today’s tickers: GXDX, MRVL, QCOM, SMH, ORCL, FUQI & SMTS

GXDX – Genoptix, Inc. – Shares of the specialized laboratory service provider engaged in delivering personalized and comprehensive diagnostic services to community-based hematologists and oncologists plunged 25.79%, crashing straight through its now defunct 52-week low of $21.75, to reach a new low of $16.98 with just over 10 minutes remaining before the closing bell. The firm’s shares plummeted after the California-based company said it expects second-quarter net income of $0.30 per share, which disappointed analysts expecting an average of $0.40 a share. One bearish options investor took advantage of Genoptix’ hemorrhaging shares by initiating a credit call spread in the August contract. The trader appears to have sold 2,000 calls at the August $17.5 strike for a premium of $1.80 each, spread against the purchase of the same number of calls at the higher August $22.5 strike for a premium of $0.50 apiece. The investor pockets a net credit of $1.30 per contract, and keeps the full amount as long as shares of the underlying stock do not rally above $17.50 ahead of expiration day. The parameters of the transaction dictate maximum potential profits of $1.30 per contract, however, potential losses faced by the responsible party sum to a maximum of $3.70 per contract if GXDX shares rebound sharply and exceed $22.50 by August expiration. Losses start to accumulate for the investor if shares rally 10.6% from the current price of $16.98 to breach the effective breakeven price of $18.80 by expiration day in August.

MRVL – Marvell Technology Group Ltd. – Bullish and bearish options trading strategies were initiated on the semiconductor maker this afternoon with shares of the underlying stock up more than 1.6% at $19.25 as of 2:40 pm (ET). Optimists purchased call options in the June and July contracts to position for continued appreciation in Marvell’s share price. Investors picked up approximately 2,500 now in-the-money calls at the June $19 strike for an average premium of $0.34 apiece. Call buyers at this strike price are positioned to make money if MRVL shares rally above the average breakeven price of $19.34 by expiration on Friday. Buying interest spread to the higher July $20 strike where 1,100 call options were coveted at an average premium of $0.52 per contract. Investors long the calls profit only if shares of the underlying stock jump 6.6% to surpass the average breakeven…

After Mega Banks Supervised by the Fed Lose Over $10 Billion to a Highly Leveraged Hedge Fund, Fed Puts Lipstick on a Pig in its Financial Stability Report

Remember the phrase “putting lipstick on a pig.” It became popular after the dot.com bust when it was learned that the big Wall Street banks had glowingly recommended “hot” new issues of stocks to their customers while secretly calling them “crap” and “dogs” in internal emails.

Putting lipstick on a pig is what the Federal Reserve is attempting to do in the Financial Stability Report it rel...

Yellen can not stop the dollar decline

Printing money results in a lower currency, so long as the currency does not fall too fast.

Previous Post: US Dollar Forecast - Weakness

Here are the very strong fundamentals for a lower US dollar:

(a) US inflation exploding.
(b) Massive US twin deficits.
(c) Better conditions in Europe.

However French election worries in 2022 Q1 and Q2 may provide US dollar strength (via European weakness) after Christmas, but this strength may come after a low in the DXY near $84.

It looks like Yellen knows a down swing in the US dollar is near because ...

Will Historic Selloff In Treasury Bonds Turn Into Opportunity?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

Long-dated treasury bonds have been crushed over the past year, sending ETFs like TLT (20+ Year US Treasury Bond ETF) spiraling over 20%.

Improving economy? Inflation concerns? Perhaps a combination of both… interest rates have risen sharply and thus bond prices have fallen in historic fashion.

Today’s chart looks at $TLT over the past 20 years. As you can see, the recent decline has truly been historic. $TLT’s price has swung from historically overbought highs to oversold lows.

At present, the long-dated bond ETF ($TLT) is trading 7.8% below its 200-...

Adaptive Fibonacci Price Modeling System Suggests Market Peak May Be Near

Courtesy of Technical Traders

Our Adaptive Fibonacci Price Modeling system is suggesting a moderate price peak may be already setting up in the NASDAQ while the Dow Jones, S&P500, and Transportation Index continue to rally beyond the projected Fibonacci Price Expansion Levels.  This indicates that capital may be shifting away from the already lofty Technology sector and into Basic Materials, Financials, Energy, Consumer Staples, Utilities, as well as other sectors.

This type of a structural market shift indicates a move away from speculation and towards Blue Chip returns. It suggests traders and investors are expecting the US consumer to come back strong (or at least hold up the market at...

The numbers of new cases in some of the hardest hit COVID19 states have started to plateau, or even decline, over the past few days. A few pundits have noted it and concluded that it was a hopeful sign.

Is it real or is something else going on? Like a restriction in the numbers of tests, or simply the inability to test enough, or are some people simply giving up on getting tested? Because as we all know from our dear leader, the less testing, the less...
