XLB Puts In Demand As Materials Stocks Selloff

Today’s tickers: XLB, SHFL & HNR

XLB - Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF – U.S. equities are in retreat today after data showing Europe’s economy contracted in the fourth quarter sparked global growth concerns. Shares in the XLB, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the performance of the Materials Select Sector Index, are down 2.2% this morning at $35.89, with all 30 stocks represented in the fund on the decline just before midday in New York. Materials stocks are among those getting hit hardest as the major averages slump to session lows. A large block of put options in play on the XLB may mean one strategist is prepared for the pullback to continue. The purchase of a block of 30,850 puts at the April $35 strike for a premium of $0.92 each may be an outright bearish stance that benefits from an additional 5.0% correction in the sector. In this case, the put buyer starts making money on the position if the price of the underlying pulls back beneath the effective breakeven price of $34.08 by expiration. Alternatively, the trader may be hedging a long position in the underlying shares, protecting against further bearish movement in the ETF through April expiration, while maintaining upside exposure should growth concerns abate. Shares in the ETF are still up more than 10% since mid-December, the trader could be locking in gains, hedging additional turbulence in the near term, under the view that equities will get back on track this spring.

SHFL - Shuffle Master, Inc. – The maker of gaming-entertainment products and technologies popped up on our scanners this morning with call options a-buzz following the release of better-than-expected first-quarter earnings after the close on Monday. Shares today jumped 20.0% to an intraday high of $17.49. More than 3,350 contracts have…

Options Traders Tackle Research In Motion

Today’s tickers: RIMM, RRR, HNR & DAL

RIMM - Research in Motion, Ltd. – Bruised, battered and beaten-down does not adequately describe how shares in RIMM look these days, particularly today after the company revealed fourth-quarter sales and earnings guidance that missed expectations, and said the new generation of Blackberrys will launch later than it had anticipated. Shares in the Research in Motion opened the session down 13.3% at an eight-year low of $13.12. The stock this year has lost more than 80.0% of its value this year, having come down from a February 18, 2011, 52-week high of $70.54. Options volume on the stock is just about to top 400,000 contracts as of 1:00 PM in New York, making it the most actively traded single-stock name by options volume today. Puts on the Blackberry maker are changing hands roughly 1.8 times for each single call option in action today. Trading in weekly options set to expire next Friday suggest some traders expect the price of the underlying to slump to fresh lows during the next five trading sessions. Bearish positions accumulated at the Dec. ’23 $14 strike, where more than 4,500 in-the-money puts changed hands against 1,082 open positions. It looks like most of the puts were purchased for an average premium of $0.83 each. Traders eyeing continued near-term weakness snapped up around 2,000 puts at the lower Dec. ’23 $13 strike at an average premium of $0.35 a-pop. Investors long the $13 strike puts may profit at expiration in the event that RIMM’s shares slip beneath the average breakeven point at $12.65. Call sellers also made an appearance in the weekly options, selling roughly 2,000 contracts at the Dec. ’23 $13 strike to pocket an average premium of $0.84 apiece. Investors selling the call options may walk away with the full amount of premium in hand as long as shares settle below $13.00 at expiration.…

Oil Discovery Drives Demand for Harvest Natural Resources Call Options

Today’s tickers: HNR, ESI, XHB & FII

HNR - Harvest Natural Resources, Inc. – News Harvest Natural Resources discovered oil off the coast of Gabon sent shares in the Houston, TX-based company up as much as 29.0% to an intraday high of $13.56. The sharp rally in the price of the underlying on the reports spurred bullish plays in Harvest’s options this morning. Shares are currently up a lesser 12.65% at $11.83 as of 12:25pm on the East Coast. Options players purchased roughly 1,600 calls at the June $12.5 strike for an average premium of $0.54 each. The call options were in-the-money earlier in the session, but are now trading out-of-the-money as the rally has cooled somewhat. Investors long the calls are poised to profit should shares in HNR increase 10.2% over the current price of $11.83 to surpass the average breakeven point to the upside at $13.04 by expiration on Friday. Like-minded bulls seeking a longer-term run-up in the price of the shares picked up roughly 1,000 calls at the September $12.5 strike for an average premium of $2.09 a-pop. Call buyers at this strike make money if shares in Harvest Natural Resources surge 23.3% to trade above the average breakeven price of $14.59 by September expiration. Options implied volatility on Harvest stands 9.8% higher on the session at 82.44% just after 12:30pm in New York.

ESI - ITT Educational Services, Inc. – Shares in the for-profit provider of degree programs in the U.S. rallied nearly 2.0% this morning to touch an intraday high of $83.74 after analysts at Piper Jaffray raised their share price target on the stock to $84.00 from $75.00. Despite the rise in shares of ITT Educational Services today one options strategist is positioning for the price of the underlying to drop sharply ahead of June…

“Just because you’re buying stock, doesn’t mean you’re an investor”

Josh here – in the mid 1960’s, investors decided that there was a group of fifty growth stocks whose outlook was so bright that it didn’t matter what price you paid for them, as long as you were buying. By the early 70’s, they were learning a critical lesson about starting valuation – McDonalds, Coke and Procter & Gamble did indeed have a very bright future, but that didn’t prevent them from being cut in half. Investors in these names would have ...

The number of new COVID-19 cases in the U.S. has jumped to around 50,000 a day, and the virus has killed more than 130,000 Americans. Yet, I still hear myths about the infection that has created the worst public health crisis in A...

Hedge Funds And The Spirit Of The PPP Program

The Spirit Of The PPP Program

Without any real 'oversight' the compliance part of these loans seems - - - questionable --- on some.  I am not sure how it all really works, but the American public likely believes these funds should have gone to the 'small business', with waiters, waitresses, or bartenders who obviously couldn't work.  This was th...

DoJ, FTC Investigating TikTok Over Child Privacy Violations

Courtesy of ZeroHedge View original post here.

Update (1840ET): Not long after President Trump confirmed that the administration is "looking into" banning TikTok, Reuters has reported that the DoJ and FTC are, in fact, looking into probing TikTok over allegations the company violated a 2019 agreement where it promised to protect children's privacy.

And instead of citing the usual anonymous sources, the report cited officials from various nonprofit groups who claimed that officials from the DoJ and FTC had met with them over compla...

Here's Why QQQ and Large Cap Tech Stocks May Rally Another 10%!

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

The long-term trend for large-cap tech stocks remains strongly in place.

And despite the steep rally out of the March lows, the index may be headed 10 percent higher.

Today’s chart highlights the $QQQ Nasdaq 100 ETF on a “monthly” basis. As you can see, the large-cap tech index touched its lower up-trend channel support in March at (1) before reversing higher.

It may now be targeting the top of the trend channel at (2), which also marks the 261.8 Fibonacci extension (based on 2000 highs and 2002 lows). That Fib level is $290 on $QQQ.

If so, this upside target for $QQQ is still 10% above current prices. Stay tuned!

These Charts Show COVID 19 Is Spreading in the US and Will Kill the Economy

The COVID 19 pandemic is, predictably, worsening again in much of the US. Only the Northeast, and to a lesser extent some Midwestern states, have been consistently improving. And that trend could also reverse as those states fully reopen.

The problem in the US seems to be widespread public resistance to recommended practices of social distancing and mask wearing. In countries where these practices have been practi...
