Overstock.com Calls Active Ahead Of Q3 Earnings Report

OSTK – Overstock.com, Inc. – Options on Overstock.com are more active than usual to kick off the trading week ahead of the company’s third-quarter earnings report prior to the opening bell on Thursday. Volume in OSTK options is currently above 1,100 contracts versus the stock’s average daily options volume of around 215 contracts. Shares in the name are off 0.70% on the session to stand at $29.05 as of 11:45 a.m. ET.

The most actively traded options contracts on the online discount retailer as measured by volume today are the Oct $35 calls, with roughly 480 lots in play against open interest of 222 contracts. Time and sales data suggests most of the volume was purchased for a premium of $0.25 each. Traders long the $35 calls stand ready to profit at expiration this week in the event that Overstock.com’s shares jump 21% over the current price of $29.05 to exceed the breakeven point at $35.25. Shares in OSTK last traded above $35.25 at the end of July.

HST – Host Hotels & Resorts Inc. – Trading in Host Hotels & Resorts put options on Monday morning indicates some traders may be bracing for shares in the name to decline ahead of expiration at the end of the week. Shares are off 0.80% today at $17.77 as of 12:25 p.m. ET.

Heavy trading in front month puts on the owner of a portfolio of luxury hotels pushed HST onto our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner during the first 30 minutes of the session, with volume in the Oct $17 puts topping 5,000 contracts versus open interest of 334 contracts. It looks like most of the Oct $17 puts were purchased at a premium of $0.10 each. Buyers of the $17 puts may profit at expiration this week if shares in Host Hotels decline 5.0% from the current price of $17.77 to breach the breakeven point on the downside at $16.90.

Overall options volume on HST is up above 6,100 contracts as of the time of this writing, well above the stock’s average daily level of 280 contracts. The company is scheduled to report third-quarter earning before the open on November 5th

Host Hotels & Resorts Put Options Sold

Today’s tickers: HST, GSI, CST, MGM, UNH, AMD, XLI & XLY

HST Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc. – The stock has shed more than 9% to stand at $7.66 on the day. One investor has positioned himself to have shares put to him by expiration in June should shares continue to decline. The sale of 13,000 puts at the June 7.5 strike price for an average premium of 73 cents apiece allows this individual to accept the premium today while bearing the risk that shares continue to decline through $7.50 by expiration. If the puts land in-the-money, he will likely have the shares put to him at an effective price of $6.77. The stock last traded at $6.76 back on January 16, 2009 after declining from its 52-week high of $18.36 nearly one year ago to the day. The investor probably figures that if the puts remain out-of-the-money he retains the premium and is happy. If the puts land in-the-money he is also happy to have shares put to him at approximately one-third the value of the 52-week high for the stock.

GSI General Steel Holdings, Inc. – Shares of the operator of a number of Chinese steel companies have taken a nosedive today, losing more than 14.5% to stand at $4.72. The stock has eroded despite the fact that the firm’s adjusted earnings per share of 9 cents for the period ended March 31, 2009, beat analyst expectations which estimated loss of about a nickel per share. In line with the bearish move in the stock, one investor loaded up on downside protection in the near-term May contract. The sale of 5,000 calls at the May 5.0 strike price for a premium of 10 cents apiece was spread against the purchase of 5,000 puts at the same strike for 40 cents each. The net cost of the transaction amounts to 30 cents and yields a breakeven point to the downside at $4.70. The stock must fall by at least 2 pennies before the trader begins to experience gains on the long put position.

COST Costco Wholesale Corp. – The operator of membership warehouses that offer branded and private label goods ranging from gruyere cheese wedges to diamond rings has experienced a more than 2.5% decline to $45.49. We observed option traders bracing themselves for potential continued bearish movement in the stock. Investors loaded up on 4,400 puts at the…

Howard Marks Interviewed: What If The Fed's Master Plan Is To Kill The Business Cycle

Courtesy of ZeroHedge View original post here.

There was a brief period when in the days just after the covid crash, Oaktree's iconic founder Howard Marks - perhaps due to lack of more productive outlets - was publishing memos faster than people could read them. Then, he kinda faded away - perhaps because he was too busy cramming down his fellow investors in creditors fights involving covenant-lite loans - but re-emerged again last week when his latest memo "...

Caught in a Debt Trap

Caught in a Debt Trap

Courtesy of John Mauldin, Thoughts from the Frontline

We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Elvis Presley’s rendition of Suspicious Minds topped the record charts in 1969. The lyrics portray a romance that couldn’t work, but was also impossible to escape. That’s also a good way to describe our relationship with government debt. We know it can’t last, but we can’t walk out. We love government spending and its benefits (like Medicare, Social Security, and unemployment insurance) too much.

In other words, we are in a debt trap. Our political process can&rsqu...

Coronavirus stimulus checks: How to get your AGI if you don't have tax return?

By Aman Jain. Originally published at ValueWalk.

Negotiations for another coronavirus relief package have been ongoing for the past three months now. However, the lawmakers have failed to reach a deal. Hopes of a deal are fading fast with an election close by, but they aren’t dead yet because negotiations are still ongoing. If somehow, lawmakers do reach a deal on the coronavirus relief package and stimulus checks, then your AGI (adjusted gross income) will be the sole criteria to determine how much money you would get.

Dan's Covid Charts: Blue States vs. Red States Over Time

The trend of lower Covid-19 case numbers per capita in blue states compared to red states isn't itself surprising, but the magnitude of the differences may be. You can visualize the evolving differences in case loads by watching the infection's progression, as measured by cases per capita, at Dan's website.

[Visit Dan’s COVID Charts to see these amazing animated charts and more. Fortunately, Dan broke his Twitter hiatus to share his work.]

People say I should break my 12-year Twitter hiatus to share my latest animated COVID chart. It compares state cases factoring in partisanship since June 1, when science had proven methodology as to how to stop the spread after the initial sucker punch. ...

Euro Weakness Here Could Spell Trouble For Gold & Silver Bulls-

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

The Euro is facing one of the most important price tests in the past 20-years, and what it does here, should have a large influence on the price of Gold and Silver weeks from now!

This chart looks at the Euro on a monthly basis, since the late 1990s. Line (1), which is the 1.20 level, has come into play numerous times as both support and resistance.

Since 2008, the Euro has been consistent about creating a series of lower highs and lower lows.

The Euro created a triple bottom from 2015 to 2016. Metals have done VERY well, once the Euro created a triple bottom from 2015 to 2016.

The rally from the 2020 lows, has the Euro testing line (1) and the...

Bitcoin chart review, here we go again!

Bitcoin has charged to the moon 4 times, well it looks like we going for a 5th. Bitcoin having 52 week new highs will bring the 'Robin Hoods' into the game.

This time may not be 10x, but 1x or 2x is still very nice thank you!

Chart 1: Accumulation is present, this alone suggest higher prices. In this blog view a typical risk on period is required to allow crypto's to rally (that is SP500 and oil up with the US dollar down), and this may arrive during the US election chaos.

COVID-19 Forces More Than Half of Asset Management Firms to Accelerate Adoption of Digital Marketing Technology

By Jacob Wolinsky. Originally published at ValueWalk.

There is no doubt that the use of technology to support client engagement initiatives brings both opportunities and threats but this has been brought into sharp focus this year with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has brought to the fore the need for firms to enable flexibility in client engagement – the expectation that providers will communicate to clients on their terms, at their speed and frequency and on their preferred channels, is now a given. This is even more critical when clients are experiencing unparalleled anxiety from both market conditions and their own personal circumstances.

Adaptive Fibonacci Price Modeling System Suggests Market Peak May Be Near

Courtesy of Technical Traders

Our Adaptive Fibonacci Price Modeling system is suggesting a moderate price peak may be already setting up in the NASDAQ while the Dow Jones, S&P500, and Transportation Index continue to rally beyond the projected Fibonacci Price Expansion Levels.  This indicates that capital may be shifting away from the already lofty Technology sector and into Basic Materials, Financials, Energy, Consumer Staples, Utilities, as well as other sectors.

This type of a structural market shift indicates a move away from speculation and towards Blue Chip returns. It suggests traders and investors are expecting the US consumer to come back strong (or at least hold up the market at...

Texas, Florida, Arizona, Georgia – The Branch COVIDIANS Are Still Burning Down the House

Courtesy of Lee Adler, WallStreetExaminer

The numbers of new cases in some of the hardest hit COVID19 states have started to plateau, or even decline, over the past few days. A few pundits have noted it and concluded that it was a hopeful sign.

Is it real or is something else going on? Like a restriction in the numbers of tests, or simply the inability to test enough, or are some people simply giving up on getting tested? Because as we all know from our dear leader, the less testing, the less...
