Overstock.com Calls Active Ahead Of Q3 Earnings Report

OSTK – Overstock.com, Inc. – Options on Overstock.com are more active than usual to kick off the trading week ahead of the company’s third-quarter earnings report prior to the opening bell on Thursday. Volume in OSTK options is currently above 1,100 contracts versus the stock’s average daily options volume of around 215 contracts. Shares in the name are off 0.70% on the session to stand at $29.05 as of 11:45 a.m. ET.

The most actively traded options contracts on the online discount retailer as measured by volume today are the Oct $35 calls, with roughly 480 lots in play against open interest of 222 contracts. Time and sales data suggests most of the volume was purchased for a premium of $0.25 each. Traders long the $35 calls stand ready to profit at expiration this week in the event that Overstock.com’s shares jump 21% over the current price of $29.05 to exceed the breakeven point at $35.25. Shares in OSTK last traded above $35.25 at the end of July.

HST – Host Hotels & Resorts Inc. – Trading in Host Hotels & Resorts put options on Monday morning indicates some traders may be bracing for shares in the name to decline ahead of expiration at the end of the week. Shares are off 0.80% today at $17.77 as of 12:25 p.m. ET.

Heavy trading in front month puts on the owner of a portfolio of luxury hotels pushed HST onto our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner during the first 30 minutes of the session, with volume in the Oct $17 puts topping 5,000 contracts versus open interest of 334 contracts. It looks like most of the Oct $17 puts were purchased at a premium of $0.10 each. Buyers of the $17 puts may profit at expiration this week if shares in Host Hotels decline 5.0% from the current price of $17.77 to breach the breakeven point on the downside at $16.90.

Overall options volume on HST is up above 6,100 contracts as of the time of this writing, well above the stock’s average daily level of 280 contracts. The company is scheduled to report third-quarter earning before the open on November 5th

Host Hotels & Resorts Put Options Sold

Today’s tickers: HST, GSI, CST, MGM, UNH, AMD, XLI & XLY

HST Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc. – The stock has shed more than 9% to stand at $7.66 on the day. One investor has positioned himself to have shares put to him by expiration in June should shares continue to decline. The sale of 13,000 puts at the June 7.5 strike price for an average premium of 73 cents apiece allows this individual to accept the premium today while bearing the risk that shares continue to decline through $7.50 by expiration. If the puts land in-the-money, he will likely have the shares put to him at an effective price of $6.77. The stock last traded at $6.76 back on January 16, 2009 after declining from its 52-week high of $18.36 nearly one year ago to the day. The investor probably figures that if the puts remain out-of-the-money he retains the premium and is happy. If the puts land in-the-money he is also happy to have shares put to him at approximately one-third the value of the 52-week high for the stock.

GSI General Steel Holdings, Inc. – Shares of the operator of a number of Chinese steel companies have taken a nosedive today, losing more than 14.5% to stand at $4.72. The stock has eroded despite the fact that the firm’s adjusted earnings per share of 9 cents for the period ended March 31, 2009, beat analyst expectations which estimated loss of about a nickel per share. In line with the bearish move in the stock, one investor loaded up on downside protection in the near-term May contract. The sale of 5,000 calls at the May 5.0 strike price for a premium of 10 cents apiece was spread against the purchase of 5,000 puts at the same strike for 40 cents each. The net cost of the transaction amounts to 30 cents and yields a breakeven point to the downside at $4.70. The stock must fall by at least 2 pennies before the trader begins to experience gains on the long put position.

COST Costco Wholesale Corp. – The operator of membership warehouses that offer branded and private label goods ranging from gruyere cheese wedges to diamond rings has experienced a more than 2.5% decline to $45.49. We observed option traders bracing themselves for potential continued bearish movement in the stock. Investors loaded up on 4,400 puts at the…

The US Can't Afford To Let Shale Fail

Courtesy of ZeroHedge View original post here.

Authored by Robert Rapier via OilPrice.com,

It’s no secret that the growth of U.S. shale oil has been a thorn in the sides of both Saudi Arabia and Russia. They have seen their market shares erode as the shale boom made the U.S. the world’s largest producer of crude oil. But Saudi Arabia’s national oil company, Saudi Aramco, is a single entity that produces 13 percent of the world’s oil and controls 17 percent of the world’s proved reserves. That puts them in a very p...

S&P Facing A Historical Kiss of Resistance?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

Is the S&P starting out a new month and quarter at a very important price point? This chart would say YES!

This chart looks at the S&P 500 on a weekly basis over the past 12-years, reflecting that it has spent the majority of the past 9-years “inside of this rising channel and above its 200-week moving average!”

The weakness in March saw the S&P break below the bottom of the channel and its 200-week ma line for the first time in 9-years.

The small counter-trend rally last week has the S&...

Weakness Appears To Be Setting For This Weeks Economic Data

Courtesy of Technical Traders

As the world reacts to the global economic slowdown because of the COVID-19 virus event and the massive stimulus programs and central bank efforts to support the global economy, investors still expect weakness in the US and foreign markets.  We believe this expected weakness will not subside until news of a proper resolution to this virus event is rooted in the minds of investors and global markets.

Hong Kong and China are currently concerned about experiencing a “third wave” of the COVID-19 virus within their society.  As the economies open back up to somewhat normal, people are very concerned that a renewed wave of new infections will suddenly appear and potenti...

The Federal Reserve had a precursor before it became the lender of last resort. It wasn’t an institution or a government department. It was a single, solitary man named J. Pierpont Morgan. Mr. Morgan, he was called in the newspapers, and you didn’t need to go any further – everyone knew to whom you were referring.

Stock market panics were common in the early 1900’s because of the agrarian nature of the economy. Each summer, the local banks that catered to farmers throughout the country began calling their money back from the banks in New York City and Chicago so they could raise enough capital to bring in the h...

Anyone holding bitcoin would have watched the market with alarm in recent weeks. The virtual currency, whose price other cryptocurrencies like ethereum and litecoin largely follow, plummeted from more than US$10,000 (£8,206) in mid-February to briefly below US$4,000 on March 13. Despite recovering to the mid-US$6,000s at the time of writin...
