AeroVironment Calls In Play As Shares Take Off

Today’s tickers: AVAV, YHOO & JCI

AVAV - AeroVironment, Inc. – Shares in the maker of drones are ripping higher on Wednesday morning, up as much as 15.5% in the early going to $23.85, the highest level since October of 2012, on reports activist investment firm, Engaged Capital LLC, has taken a roughly 5% stake in the company. Options traders betting the stock continues to move higher in the near term snapped up call options on AeroVironment. It looks like traders picked up more than 400 now in-the-money calls at the Jul $22.5 strike for a premium of $0.40 apiece during the first 30 minutes of the trading session. Intraday gains in the price of the underlying since those contracts were purchased has pushed the price tag on the $22.5 strike calls up to $1.25 each as of 11:20 a.m. ET. Bulls also appear to have purchased roughly 400 in-the-money calls at the Aug $22.5 strike for an average premium of $0.66 per contract in the early going. Premium required to purchase the Aug $22.5 calls has more than doubled since this morning to $1.60 as of the time of this writing. Finally, around 380 calls changed hands at the Aug $25 strike versus zero open interest, with most of the volume purchased for an average premium of $0.49 each. Traders long the Aug $25 strike calls stand ready to profit at expiration next month should shares in AVAV rally 8.4% over the current price of $23.51 to exceed the average breakeven point at $25.49.

YHOO - Yahoo! Inc. – Options volume is soaring on Yahoo today, with more than 125,000 contracts traded on the stock by 11:35 a.m. in New York versus average daily volume of around 37,000 contracts. Most of the action is in YHOO calls, with shares in the Internet media…

Bears Paw At Calls And Puts On Cisco Systems

Today’s tickers: CSCO, DELL, JCI & RRR

CSCO - Cisco Systems, Inc. – Shares in the maker of routers and switches were on a tear this week, rallying as much as 9.3% over Monday’s open to a high of $16.76 on Thursday. The stock had been in positive territory to start the final trading session of the week, but have since slipped 0.30% to stand at $16.70 as of 11:50 am in New York. Activity in put options set to expire one week from today suggest some traders are positioned to see Cisco’s shares continue to lose ground in the near term. Meanwhile, longer-dated calls indicate investors expect shares to run up against resistance at the $17.00 and $18.00 levels through April 2012 expiration.

Investors predicting a near-term pullback in the price of the underlying purchased roughly 2,600 puts at the Oct. ’14 $16 strike for an average premium of $0.10 per contract. Put buyers profit at expiration next week should shares in Cisco Systems drop 4.8% from the current price of $16.70 to breach the effective breakeven point on the downside at $15.90. Looking out to the April 2012 contract, it appears traders are selling large blocks of call options. Investors may be selling the calls outright, or writing the contracts against long stock positions. The heaviest volume was observed at the April 2012 $18 strike, where more than 10,000 calls were sold for an average premium of $1.25 each. It looks like the largest single block sold 7,481 times. The investor responsible for the sizeable position keeps the $1.25 premium received on the trade as long as shares in Cisco fail to exceed $18.00 at expiration in April. Cisco’s shares last traded above $18.00 back in April 2011. Options implied volatility on the stock rose 14.7% to…

Strangle Strategist Sees Sharp Shifts in Johnson Controls Shares

Today’s tickers: JCI, LEA, X, LFT, TS, MU, LULU, DLB & RRC

JCI – Johnson Controls, Inc. – A long strangle enacted on the maker of batteries for automobiles and hybrid electric vehicles this afternoon implies the firm’s share price could swing dramatically ahead of May expiration. Johnson’s shares gained 0.72% in late afternoon trading to stand at $33.35. Earlier in the session shares of the underlying stock reached a new 52-week high of $33.60. The investor responsible for the long strangle play is expecting to profit if JCI’s shares trade outside of a specified range ahead of expiration day. The volatility player purchased roughly 10,000 puts at the May $32 strike for an average premium of $0.89 apiece and picked up 10,000 calls at the higher May $34 strike for $1.14 each. The net cost of the strangle amounts to $2.03 per contract. Shares must trade above the upper breakeven price of $36.03, or trade beneath the lower breakeven point at $29.97, in order for the strangler to amass profits ahead of May expiration.

LEA – Lear Corp. – Bullish options activity on the manufacturer of automotive seat systems suggests at least one investor is preparing for shares to trade at a significantly higher price by expiration in September. Lear’s shares increased 0.85% to $80.37during the current session to trade just $0.53 below the current 52-week high on the stock of $80.90. The optimistic options strategist initiated a debit call spread by purchasing 2,500 calls at the September $85 strike for a premium of $5.40 apiece, and by selling the same number of calls at the higher September $95 strike for $2.10 each. Net premium paid for the transaction amounts to $3.30 per contract. Thus, the trader stands ready to accrue maximum potential profits of $6.70 per contract if Lear’s shares surge 18.20% from the current price to $95.00 by expiration day in September.

X – United States Steel Corp. – Bullish options trading on U.S. Steel Corp. today follows news reports that steelmakers are set to hike prices globally as the economic recovery drains inventory levels and boosts demand and prices for raw materials. The price of steel, according to a Bloomberg News article, increased 9.1% in the U.S. during the month of February. U.S. Steel’s shares rallied 2% during the first half of the trading session to stand at $64.77, and earlier this morning traded up to…

Boeing cuts thousands more jobs than originally said

By Michelle Jones. Originally published at ValueWalk.

Boeing’s job cuts are going deeper than initially said. The aerospace giant is cutting over 12,000 jobs in the U.S., which is thousands more than it originally planned to cut. The job cuts come as Boeing restructures and seeks to deal with the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic without a government bailout after years of share buybacks.

Tech Indicator Suggesting A Historic Top Could Be Forming?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

Tech stocks have been the clear leader of the stock market recovery rally, this year and since the lows back in 2007!

But within the ranks of leadership, and an important ratio may be sending a caution message to investors.

In today’s chart, we look at the ratio of large-cap tech stocks (the Nasdaq 100 Index) to the broader tech market (the Nasdaq Composite) on a “monthly” basis.

The large-cap concentrated Nasdaq 100 (only 100 stocks) has been the clear leader for several years versus the ...

M2 Velocity Collapses - Could A Bottom In Capital Velocity Be Setting Up?

Courtesy of Technical Traders

M2 Velocity is the measurement of capital circulating within the economy.  The faster capital circulates within the economy, the more that capital is being deployed within the economy to create output and opportunities for economic growth.  When M2 Velocity contracts, capital is being deployed in investments or assets that prevent that capital from further circulation within the economy – thus preventing further output and opportunity growth features.

The decline in M2 Velocity over the past 10+ years has been dramatic and consistent with the dramatic new zero US Federal Reserve interest rates initiated since just after the 2008 credit crisis market colla...

US Southern States COVID19 Cases – Let’s Give Credit Where Due

The number of new COVID 19 cases has been falling in the Northeast, but the South is not having the same experience. The number of new cases per day in each Southern state has been rangebound for the past month.

And that’s assuming that the numbers haven’t been manipulated. We know that in Georgia’s case at least, they have been. And there are suspicions about Florida as well, as the State now engages in a smear campaign against the fired employee who built its much praised COVID19 database and dashboar...
