Upside Call Buyers Enjoy Gains As Shares In Ciena Corp. Rise

Options brief will resume April 12, 2013.

Today’s tickers: CIEN, TITN & KKR

CIEN - Ciena Corp. – Shares in networking products and services provider, Ciena Corp., jumped 8.0% on Wednesday morning to and intraday high of $16.81, rising in sympathy with ADTRAN after that company reported better-than-expected first-quarter earnings and revenue after the closing bell on Tuesday. Some options traders are benefitting handsomely from the pop in Ciena’s shares today, having purchased upside calls on the stock yesterday. The largest increase in call open interest on CIEN since the prior session was in the April $16 strike calls. Time and sales data indicates some 5,000 of the $16 calls were purchased yesterday for an average premium of $0.21 apiece. The sharp rally in the price of the underlying today has more than tripled the value of the $16 calls overnight, with the contracts currently changing hands at $0.72 each as of midday in New York. Meanwhile, traders initiating bullish bets on Ciena Corp. today looked to the April $18 strike, buying up around 3,000 call options for an average premium of $0.09 per contract. Buyers of the $18 calls stand ready to profit at expiration should shares in the name rally another 8.0% to top the average breakeven point at $18.09 by expiration next week. Bulls also snapped up more than 1,200 calls at the May $18 strike this morning at an average premium of $0.35 each.

TITN - Titan Machinery, Inc. – Bearish options purchased on Titan Machinery yesterday ahead of the backhoe manufacturer’s fourth-quarter earnings report are generating sizable overnight paper profits for some traders today, with shares in the name plunging to the lowest level since November of 2012. TITN shares are currently down 16% on the session at $21.95 as of 12:15 p.m. ET. It looks traders picked up around 1,600 puts at the April $25 strike on Tuesday, the nearest to-the-money strike price available with shares in Titan Machinery closing the session at around $26.14. Put buyers paid $0.90 in premium per contract…

Options Suggest Carnival Corp. Rally Is Running On Empty

Today’s tickers: CCL, ELX, OVTI & KKR

CCL - Carnival Corp. – Shares in the provider of cruise vacations are up 3.0% at $30.30 in early-afternoon trade, but options activity on the stock indicates the rally may lose steam. Investors appear to be selling in- and out-of-the-money calls on the cruise operator today perhaps on the expectation that today’s stock market rally represents but a brief respite from painful market pullbacks on the horizon. Abundant signs the market is slowing coupled with potential debt disasters overseas could dampen consumers’ willingness to spend hard-earned money on a non-essential cruise vacation. Shares in Carnival currently hover just above Wednesday’s fresh 52-week low of $29.35. Traders expecting Carnival’s shares to sink below $30.00 by expiration next month sold some 8,500 calls at the September $30 strike to pocket an average premium of $1.80 per contract. Call sellers keep the full amount of premium received as long as CCL’s shares fail to exceed $30.00 at expiration day. Premium received on the sale acts as a buffer against potentially uncapped losses to the upside, but protection gives way in the event that shares exceed the effective breakeven price of $31.80. Call selling spread to the higher September $32 strike where some 200 lots sold for an average premium of $0.92 a-pop. Reminders of the strong headwinds to growth going forward would likely once again spur investors to abandon ship on consumer discretionary names such as Carnival. The call options sold today expire several days ahead of CCL’s third-quarter earnings report on September 20.

ELX - Emulex Corp. – Shares in the provider of networking convergence solutions and equipment rose 1.6% this afternoon to $6.92, led higher by the broad market rally in U.S. stocks and Cisco’s better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings report. Emulex is slated to post its…

Regional Banks About To Send Important Message!

Courtesy of Chris Kimble.

Large and Regional banks have struggled this year, as both indices have declined nearly 15% in 2018.  These declines have taken place as interest rates have been moving higher, which historically is positive for banks.

The declines of late in Regional Bank ETF (KRE) has it testing 7-year rising support as well as the 2007 highs at (1).

The Power of the Pattern is of the opinion, what KRE does at (1), will send an important message to the banking industry and the broad markets.

Keep a close eye on KRE in the weeks ahead friends, this looks to be an important test of support!...

How low will Bitcoin now go? The history of price bubbles provides some clues

The Bitcoin bubble is perhaps the most extreme speculative bubble since the late 19th century. Shutterstock

Nearly 170 years before the invention of Bitcoin, the journalist Charles Mackay noted the way whole communities could “fix their minds upon one object and go mad in its pursuit”. Millions of people, he wrote, “become simultaneously impressed with one delusion, and run after it, till their attention is caught by some new folly more captivating than the first”.

Weekly Market Recap Dec 09, 2018

Courtesy of Blain.

Bears are certainly showing the type of strength we haven’t seen in a long time.   A week ago at this time futures were surging on news of a “truce” for 90 days between China and the U.S. in their trade spat.  But the charts were still not saying lovely things despite a major rally the week prior.   And by Tuesday, darkness had descended back on the indexes, with another gut punch Friday.    A lot of emphasis was put on a long term Treasury yield dropping below a shorter term Treasury.

On Monday, the yield on five year government debt slid below the yield on three year debt, a phenomenon which has p...

Ever since the financial crisis, there has been a huge fascination with predictions of the next “big crash” right around the next corner. Whether it is Greece, Italy, Chinese debt, the “overvalued” stock market, the Shiller Ratio, Puerto Rico, underfunded pensions in Illinois and New Jersey, the Fed (both for QE a few years ago and now for removing QE), rising interest rates, Federal budget deficits, peaking profit margins, etc...
