Vale Options Bulls Continue to Charge as Shares Slumber

Today’s tickers: VALE, AMZN, TAP, FDO, SYMC, MON, MFA & TLB

VALE - Option traders set up long-term bullish trades across several contracts on the world’s largest iron-ore producer. Shares edged 0.25% lower this afternoon to $23.82 despite the upgrade to ‘buy’ from ‘neutral’ and the increase in target price to $31.00 from $25.00, at Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. One investor reeled in profits by closing out an existing short put position. He originally sold 6,500 puts at the March 23 strike for a premium of 3.35 apiece. Today he made a closing purchase of all the contracts for 2.40 each. Net profits on the transaction amount to 95 cents each or total gains of $617,500. Next, it seems the same investor initiated a new bullish stance on the stock by employing the same short-put strategy at the January 2011 22.5 strike where he sold 6,500 puts for 4.00 per contract. The next optimistic transaction today was a bullish risk reversal. One investor shed 10,000 puts at the January 2011 20 strike for 2.87 each in order to partially finance the purchase of 10,000 calls at the January 25 strike for 4.00 per contract. The net cost of the reversal amounts to 1.13. Thus, profits are available on the trade if VALE’s shares rally a minimum of 10% by expiration, to surpass the breakeven price of $26.13. – Vale S.A. –

AMZN - Shares of e-tailer, Amazon.com, are up 3% to $93.61. A bullish risk reversal in the November contract today suggests at least one option trader expects to see significant near-term gains in the stock by expiration. The reversal involved the sale of 5,000 puts at the November 80 strike for an average premium of 1.80 apiece. The short sale of the put options partially financed the purchase of 5,000 calls at the November 105 strike for 2.30 each. The net cost of the trade amounts to 50 cents per contract. If the investor is to accumulate profits by expiration, shares of AMZN must add at least 13% to the current price to breach the breakeven point at $105.50. – Amazon.com, Inc. –

TAP - The beer brewing company appeared on our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner due to bearish options action in the January 2011 contract. Shares edged 0.5% higher during the trading session to $49.52. The investor responsible for the trade sold 5,000 calls at the January 55…

Bearish Put-Spreader Paws Profits at Merck

Today’s tickers: MRK, IMMU, AET, ODP, FSLR, EEM, MFA & XLI

MRK – The pharmaceutical company declared a quarterly dividend of 38 cents per share for the fourth quarter of 2009 today, amid a 3% decline in shares to arrive at the current price of $29.81. A bearish put spread established in the October contract suggests some investors are wary of further declines for the company. The spread involved the purchase of 7,400 puts at the October 31 strike price for 2.23 apiece against the sale of 7,400 puts at the lower October 29 strike for a premium of 1.28 each. The net cost of the transaction amounts to 95 cents, yielding the investor maximum potential profits of 1.05 if the stock slips to $29.00 by expiration. The current market price of MRK is currently lower than the breakeven point on the trade of $30.05. Thus, the investor responsible for the spread has already earned 24 cents by assuming a bearish stance on the stock. – Merck & Company, Inc.

IMMU – Shares of the biopharmaceutical company engaged in the development of products designed to treat cancer, autoimmune, and other serious diseases, have surged more than 14% to $5.24 during the trading session. Bullish movement in the stock was fueled by the news that IMMU has entered into a partnership and cross-licensing agreement with Alexis Biotech Ltd., of London, England. The firms are combining efforts in order to develop “targeted vaccines against cancers” such as melanoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, as well as infectious diseases such as AIDS. Option traders hoping for continued upward movement in the price of the underlying were seen getting long of bullish call options in the September contract. The September 7.5 strike price had approximately 3,500 calls coveted for 38 cents apiece. Investors holding the calls will begin to realize profits in the event that shares climb another 50% to surpass the breakeven point at $7.88 by expiration. – Immunomedics, Inc.

AET – The third-largest health insurer in the United States has enjoyed a rally in shares of more than 13% to $29.08 this afternoon after receiving an upgrade to ‘outperform’ from ‘neutral’ at Cowen and Company. Call options exchanged on the stock today exceeded the number of puts by a factor of more than 3-to-1, reflecting bullish sentiment by investors. The near-term August 30 strike price had more than 8,800 calls purchased for

"Make It Stop"

“Make It Stop”

Courtesy of

Every time the stock market falls, no really, every single time, a friend of mine texts me the same thing: “Make it stop.” And every time I tell him the same thing- “You should hope stocks go a lot lower.”

For people still contributing to their retirement accounts, they shouldn’t fear lower prices, they should pray for them.

Let’s look at a real world hypothetical example.

I sorted all twenty-year rolling returns for the S&P 500 and plucked returns near the median. Stocks had nearly identical compound annual growth rates in the ...

Nomura: Global Equity Sentiment "Has Managed To Avoid 'The Panic Zone'"... For Now

Courtesy of ZeroHedge View original post here.

US equity markets are excitedly recovering last week's losses as hope once again washes across global markets that lower rates, fiscal recklessness will save the world. The explicit driver of the bounce is yet another short-squeeze - the second biggest since the start of 2019.

Source: Bloomberg

The last time we saw a bounce like this was the first days of June, when - again - a heavy oversold reading going into a barrage of Fed speakers prompted m...

Transports 10-Year Bullish Trend Being Tested! Rally Time or Breakdown?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

Is the DJ Transportation Index presenting a rare buying opportunity? The broad market most likely hopes so!

Transports have spent the majority of the past decade creating a series of higher lows. This pattern has created rising channel (1), which started back in 2009.

Transports have created a bearish divergence to the S&P 500 over the past 20-months, as they have created lower highs, while the S&P has done the exact opposite.

The softness in Transports has the testing its May lows and the 10-year rising channel to start out the week at (2). While testing...

New Zealand Becomes 1st Country To Legalize Payment Of Salaries In Crypto

Courtesy of ZeroHedge View original post here.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have been on a persistent upswing this year, but they're still pretty volatile. But during a time when even some of the most developed economies in the word are watching their currencies bounce around like the Argentine peso (just take a look at a six-month chart for GBPUSD), New Zealand has decided to take the plunge and become the first country to legalize payment in bitcoin, the FT reports.

The ruling by New Zealand’s tax authority allows salaries and wages to b...

Despacito - How to Make Money the Old-Fashioned Way - SLOWLY!

Are you ready to retire?

For most people, the purpose of investing is to build up enough wealth to allow you to retire.  In general, that's usually enough money to reliably generate a year's worth of your average income, each year into your retirement so that that, plus you Social Security, should be enough to pay your bills without having to draw down on your principle.

Unfortunately, as the last decade has shown us, we can't count on bonds to pay us more than 3% and the average return from the stock market over the past 20 years has been erratic - to say the least - with 4 negative years (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2008) and 14 positives, though mostly in the 10% range on the positives.  A string of losses like we had from 2000-02 could easily wipe out a decades worth of gains.

Still, the stock market has been better over the last 10 (7%) an...
