Traders Look To Tumi Puts As Shares Edge Higher

Today’s tickers: TUMI, TWC & NRF

TUMI - Tumi Holdings, Inc. – Shares in luggage and travel accessories maker, Tumi Holdings Inc., are moving higher for a third consecutive session, up 1.6% today at $20.77 as of 12:10 p.m. ET. The stock continues to rebound following a sharp pullback last week during the first trading session of 2013. Options activity on Tumi this morning suggests some traders are wary the stock could reverse gains in the near term. The most active options on the stock today are the Jan. $20 strike puts, with upwards of 1,200 lots changing hands versus open interest of just nine contracts. It looks like most of the puts were purchased for an average premium of $0.70 apiece, thus positioning buyers to profit in the event that Tumi’s shares slide 7% from the current level to breach the average breakeven price of $19.30 by January expiration. Shares in the luxury luggage company last traded below $19.30 back in August 2012. Tumi Holdings, Inc. is scheduled to present at the 15th Annual ICR XChange Conference in Miami next Wednesday.

TWC - Time Warner Cable, Inc. – The provider of video, high-speed data and phone services popped up on our market scanners this morning due to heavy volume in the February expiry put options. Shares in Time Warner Cable kicked off the week in positive territory, but have since reversed gains to trade down 0.60% on the day at $97.17 as of 12:25 p.m. in New York. One options trader appears to be placing a floor on the cable operator’s shares, selling 6,250 puts at the Feb. $90 strike for a premium of $0.60 apiece. The strategy makes maximum profits of $0.60 per contract as long as shares in TWC settle above $90.00 and the puts land out-of-the-money at February expiration. The put seller could wind up having 625,000 shares of the underlying put to him at expiration if shares in the name decline 7.4% to $90.00 during the next five weeks. Time Warner reports fourth-quarter earnings ahead of the opening bell on the…

Recovery Play Initiated In Leap Wireless LEAPs As Shares Extend Losses

Today’s tickers: LEAP, TUMI & FOSL

LEAP - Leap Wireless International, Inc. – The wireless carrier’s shares have been hard-hit in recent months, down more than 50% off the 2012 high of $11.29 as of the close of trading on Monday. The stock plunged another 22% this morning to touch down at a new 52-week low of $4.28 after the company reported a wider-than-expected second-quarter loss and revealed net subscriber losses of around 289,000 customers. Options on Leap Wireless International are more active than usual today, and it looks like one strategist is positioning to benefit from a recovery in the shares over the long term. Speculation the company may be a takeover target for one of the larger carriers has sparked sharp rallies in Leap’s shares in the past; perhaps the bull call spread initiated in the January 2014 expiry this morning is preparing to benefit from a potential repeat performance in the future. Regardless of the impetus for the position, the parameters appear to be as follows. The trader purchased a roughly 2,500-lot Jan. 2014 $5.0/$10 call spread at an average net premium of $1.10 per contract. Profits are available on the trade in the event LEAP shares surge 40% to top the average breakeven price of $6.10 at expiration. The maximum payoff on the position amounts to $3.90 per contract should the stock more than double to settle above $10.00 by expiration in January 2014.

TUMI - Tumi Holdings, Inc. – Shares in the provider of premium travel products and luggage jumped more than 22% today to $22.74 after the company posted better-than-expected earnings and sales for the second quarter. Pre-earnings bullish bets, including a block of 2,692 Aug. $20 call options purchased for a premium of $0.65 each yesterday morning, have roughly tripled in value overnight given the current premium on the $20 calls of $2.35 as of midday in New York. The stock still trades at a 14% discount to…

Caesars, Tumi Options Active Ahead Of Earnings After The Close

Today’s tickers: CZR, TUMI & SYY

CZR - Caesars Entertainment Corp. – The casino entertainment company and owner of the World Series of Poker® attracted heavier than usual options activity ahead of its second-quarter earnings report after the closing bell today. Shares in Caesars Entertainment Corp. are up 0.25% on the day at $8.34, but have fallen 45% from the stock’s February 7th closing high of $15.40, the same date of the company’s IPO. The purchase of 2,400 Aug. $7.5 strike put options in the first 15 minutes of the trading week suggests one trader is preparing for the price of the underlying to extend losses after earnings. The bearish position cost $0.35 per contract and makes money if shares in Caesars drop 14% from the current price to trade below a breakeven point and record low of $7.15 by August expiration.

TUMI - Tumi Holdings, Inc. – The retailer of high-end luggage, briefcases and bags is enjoying a 1.4% upside move in the price of its shares today to $18.20 ahead of its second-quarter earnings report after the final bell. Call buying initiated on the stock this morning suggests one or more options players are positioning for the price of the underlying to extend gains in the near term. Perhaps anticipating a pop in the shares after Tumi announces its quarterly results for the second time as a public company, traders exchanged more than 3,200 calls at the Aug. $20 strike against previously existing open interest of 136 contracts. It looks like most of the calls were purchased for an average premium of $0.63 apiece, thus positioning buyers to profit at expiration in the event TUMI shares surge 13% to top the average breakeven price of $20.63. Some luxury retail names, such as handbag maker, Coach, Inc., were slammed after recent top line misses. Shares in Coach fell more than 18% on July 31st after fourth-quarter revenue failed to meet analyst expectations. Tumi’s shares…

The COVID Comeback

The COVID Comeback

Rocky Balboa (“The Italian Stallion”) the underdog boxer from the movie, Rocky, was down and out until he was given the opportunity to fight World Heavyweight Champion, Apollo Creed. Like the stock market during early 2020, Rocky was up against the ropes and got knocked down, but eventually he picked himself up and rebounded to victory in his rematch with Creed.

The stock market comeback also persisted last month as th...

How Can We Address the Cybersecurity Skills Gap?

By Dale Strickland. Originally published at ValueWalk.

A 2019 report from Burning Glass noted a 94% growth in the number of cybersecurity job postings since 2013. Unfortunately, the available pool workers with the cybersecurity skills needed to fulfill these roles has risen in proportion, creating a significant gap. What can be done to increase the available pool of candidates?

Silver volume says something is near boiling point

Courtesy of Read the Ticker

Fundamentals are important, but they must show up in the chart. And when they do and if they may matter, it is a good sign if price and volume waves show a change of character.

The Point and Figure chart below is readtheticker.com version of PnF chart format, it is designed to highlight price and volume waves clearly (notice the Volume Hills chart).

Silver ETF volume is screaming at us! The price volatility along with volume tells us those who have not cared, are starting to, those who are wrong are adjusting, and those who are correct are loading up. Soon the kettle will blow and the price of silver will be over $20.

Normally silver suffers in a recession, maybe this time with trillions of paper money being creat...

Tech Indicator Suggesting A Historic Top Could Be Forming?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

Tech stocks have been the clear leader of the stock market recovery rally, this year and since the lows back in 2007!

But within the ranks of leadership, and an important ratio may be sending a caution message to investors.

In today’s chart, we look at the ratio of large-cap tech stocks (the Nasdaq 100 Index) to the broader tech market (the Nasdaq Composite) on a “monthly” basis.

The large-cap concentrated Nasdaq 100 (only 100 stocks) has been the clear leader for several years versus the ...

M2 Velocity Collapses - Could A Bottom In Capital Velocity Be Setting Up?

Courtesy of Technical Traders

M2 Velocity is the measurement of capital circulating within the economy.  The faster capital circulates within the economy, the more that capital is being deployed within the economy to create output and opportunities for economic growth.  When M2 Velocity contracts, capital is being deployed in investments or assets that prevent that capital from further circulation within the economy – thus preventing further output and opportunity growth features.

The decline in M2 Velocity over the past 10+ years has been dramatic and consistent with the dramatic new zero US Federal Reserve interest rates initiated since just after the 2008 credit crisis market colla...

US Southern States COVID19 Cases – Let’s Give Credit Where Due

Courtesy of

The number of new COVID 19 cases has been falling in the Northeast, but the South is not having the same experience. The number of new cases per day in each Southern state has been rangebound for the past month.

And that’s assuming that the numbers haven’t been manipulated. We know that in Georgia’s case at least, they have been. And there are suspicions about Florida as well, as the State now engages in a smear campaign against the fired employee who built its much praised COVID19 database and dashboar...
