Positive Outlook from LDK Chief Boosts Solar Stocks and Options

Today’s tickers: LDK, BP, ASH & VIA

LDK - LDK Solar Co. Ltd. – The prospects look brighter for solar panel maker according to its president who told Taiwanese electronics website DigiTimes that the industry hit its low point in the first quarter. LDK’s chief also told the website not only to expect a second-quarter rebound but that the industry was not playing out investors’ currently pessimistic scenario. Adding fuel to a rally across shares in the renewable energy sector was confirmation from Germany that its last nuclear power station would close in 2022. One investor struck to make a bullish play on LDK by writing put options expiring in less than three weeks raking in a total premium of $145,000. The investor sold 5,000 put options for 29 cents apiece guaranteeing to take delivery of 50,000 shares at $7.00 each by June 17. Just two weeks ago LDK’s share price meaningfully breached $10.00 for the first time since September on fears for earnings across the industry. Last week they traded as low as $6.14 before today’s rally took hold and kicked them back to as high as $7.24. Currently the speculative strategy is an at-the-money investment, but by taking in the 29 cent premium the investor is effectively lowering his buy price to $6.71 and presumably is banking on June 7 earnings to help vilify his stance.

BP - BP Plc – Shares in Europe’s second-largest oil company have performed strongly in recent weeks, shrugging off a disastrous outcome with its Russian subsidiary that left it floundering without an expansion policy. Nevertheless investors have warmed to recent news of possibly less financial liability resulting from the Gulf of Mexico spillage one year ago. Shares reached the highest since May 2 on Tuesday in early going although have pared gains throughout…

Thank GDP It’s Friday – Finally Some Facts

Is bad news going to be good news?

Last quarter, after several adjustments, it has been decided that our GDP grew at a 1.7% rate.  The general consensus is that this quarter we should be up around 2% but the whisper number is a big miss, down to 1.3%.  Slower GDP growth will be GOOD for the stock market as it gives Ben and Tim the excuse they need to crank up the printing presses for some real Zimbabwe-style inflation.

It’s easy to pay off $15Tn in fixed rate 2-year to 30-year notes when your country is cranking out $1Tn bank notes, right?  Can this really be the path our nation is following?  The markets are certainly betting on it but we have been betting against it with longs on UUP at $22.50 (still there) and a short play on the QID weekly $13 calls at .46 yesterday along with other bearish trade ideas we’ve entered ahead of the GDP as well as the elections and next week’s Fed meeting.

Why can’t we just give up and go with the flow?  Well, first of all, you can read my last few weeks of posts or you can read our last few Newsletters so I won’t rehash the great global macros here but I will make the point that (and this may shock you) we are not alone in the World and the things we do, or try to do in our economy, affect the economies of other nations.  Perhaps when the US was 40% of Global GDP, we could have gotten away with it but now we are 20% and falling fast yet we still attempt to run our foreign and economic policies as if we are large and in charge.

This is not the way the rest of the World sees us anymore.  To the rest of the World we are unrealistic children with dangerous spending habits who happen to owe them A LOT of money.  We borrowed $15Tn and our "plan" is to pay them back with hyperinflated dollars that are already discounted 33% from where we began cranking up the borrowing in 2002 (to pay for wars and tax cuts).

Already, other nations are refusing to lend us more money so we have begun to engage in what Bill Gross, the world’s biggest bond

Are Commodities Sending Global Macro Message To Investors?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble.

Commodities are becoming a hot topic… and an important investing theme. With the US Dollar coming back to life, commodities have pulled back. And that pullback now has the “equal weight” complex in trouble.

Below is a chart of the Thomson Reuters Equal Weight Commodity Index. The green shaded area represents a 20-year rising channel (point 1).  Within that channel, however, commodities have formed a multi-year downtrend (point 2 – marked in red).

Using the all-time high and the early 2016 low, we can identify key Fibonacci levels. One level is the 23.6% Fib, which proved to be stiff resistance (point 3), marking a bearish reversal as well.

Currently, the Commodity Index is attempting to break 20-year channel support (point 4).

Investors should watch for ...

The Anatomy Of A Crisis: A Strong USD And Disappearing Liquidity

By Adem Tumerkan (PalisadeResearch). Originally published at ValueWalk.

Since March – the dollar’s rallied over 7%. And it’s caused the Emerging Markets to implode.

Q2 hedge fund letters, conference, scoops etc

But the bigger problem is what lies ahead.

And that’s a global dollar shortage – which the mainstream continues to ignore. . .

I’ve touched on this a couple months back. Wondering when the mainstream would start to r...

Derivatives: Donald Trump's Most Dangerous Knowledge Gap

President Donald Trump Addresses a Joint Session of Congress, February 28, 2017

It has been soundly demonstrated that the President of the United States has a knowledge vacuum in proper presidential decorum, diplomacy, and accepted norms of behavior. Just yesterday the President Tweeted that a former black female colleague in the White House, Omarosa Manigault Newman, is a “crazed, crying lowlife” and a “dog.”  On June 25, the President Tweeted that a sitting black female member of Congress, Maxine Waters...

Tesla's Board Throws Elon Musk Under The Bus

Courtesy of ZeroHedge. View original post here.

One of the key questions to emerge from Elon Musk's going private "funding secured" fiasco, is where was the board before, during and after the series of torrid tweets sent out by the Tesla CEO in the past two weeks.  In an overnight NYT article, we finally get a fairly clear picture of what was going on through the heads of the company's board of directors, and it's not pretty.

While we urge readers to skim the full piece here, below ...

People are just becoming acquainted with the idea of digital money in the form of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, where transactions are recorded on a secure distributed database called a blockchain. There Are 3 Main Theories That Explain Trump's Approach to Putin and Russia-Which One Makes the Most Sense?

What do you think?

Thom Hartmann suggests that the "Manchurian Candidate theory" is the least likely explanation for Trump's pro-Russia behavior in "There Are 3 Main Theories That Explain Trump’s Approach to Putin and Russia—Which One Makes the Most Sense?" (below).  disagrees and suggests that Putin probably has "the goods" on Trump in "Trump’s Plot Against America". (To be fair, Hartmann acknowledges that his three theories are not mutually exclusive.) Jonathan Chait argues ...

Mapping The Market

Mistakes were Made. (And, Yes, by Me.)

Via Jean-Luc:

Famed investor reflecting on his mistakes:

Mistakes were Made. (And, Yes, by Me.)

One that stands out for me:

Instead of focusing on how value factors in general did in identifying attractive stocks, I rushed to proclaim price-to-sales the winner. That was, until it wasn’t. I guess there’s a reason for the proclamation “The king is dead, long live the king” when a monarchy changes hands. As we continued to update the book, price-to-sales was no longer the “best” single value factor, replaced by others, depending upon the time frames examined. I had also become a lot more sophisticated in my analysis—thanks to criticism of my earlier work—and realized that everything, including factors, moves in and out of favor, depending upon the market environment. I also realized...
