Micron Calls Change Hands At A Clip Ahead Of Earnings After The Close

Options brief will resume June 21st, 2013.

Today’s tickers: MU, VNDA & MW

MU - Micron Technology, Inc. – Options traders appear to be snapping up out of the money call options on Micron Technology this morning ahead of the company’s third-quarter earnings report after the closing bell today. Shares in the name kicked off the trading session in rally mode, rising as much as 2.6% to a six-year high of $14.11 in the early going, but have since turned negative to stand 0.15% lower on the day at $13.73 as of 11:10 a.m. ET. Micron’s shares are up roughly 130% since this time last year. July expiry call options are seeing the most volume as of the time of this writing. Notable fresh interest is building in the Jul $16 and $17 strike calls, with more than 23,000 contracts in play at each. It looks like much of the volume in the $16 strike calls was purchased for an average premium of $0.44 apiece, while bulls paid an average premium of $0.26 each to get long the Jul $17 strike calls. Traders long the $16 strike calls stand ready to profit at expiration next month should shares in MU rally 16.5% over today’s high of $14.11 to top the average breakeven point at $16.44, while the $17 strike calls make money given a more than 22% move in the price of the underlying to $17.26 by July expiration. Overall options volume of 187,000 contracts on Micron is well above the stock’s average daily level of around 111,000 contracts less than two hours into the trading day. Heavy trading traffic in MU calls has pushed the call/put ratio to 4.0 as of 11:25 a.m. in New York.

VNDA - Vanda Pharmaceuticals, Inc. – Shares in Vanda Pharmaceuticals are getting slammed on Wednesday; down 24% at $8.31 as of 11:25 a.m. ET after…

Put Options Active On AmerisourceBergen

Today’s tickers: ABC, VNDA & DMND

ABC - AmerisourceBergen Corp – Shares in AmerisourceBergen are up 2.4% today and nearly 30% year to date, but options in play on the stock suggest one or more traders are bracing for the price of the underlying to potentially pull back during the next couple of months. Shares are currently hovering around $55.00 as of 12:45 p.m. ET, helped higher by an upgrade to ‘Outperform’ from ‘Market Perform’ at Leerink Swann yesterday. The most actively traded options on ABC are the Aug $50 puts, with upwards of 18,000 contracts traded thus far in the session against open interest of just 160 contracts. Time and sales data suggests much of the volume was purchased for an average premium of $0.88 each, thus positioning buyers to profit should shares in ABC drop more than 10% from the current level to breach the average breakeven point on the downside at $49.12 by August expiration. Shares in AmerisourceBergen last traded below $49.12 in March.

VNDA - Vanda Pharmaceuticals, Inc. – Far out of the money call buying on Vanda Pharmaceuticals today indicates some traders are positioning for shares in the name to extend gains in the near term, with the stock up more than 18% on the session at a new three-year high of $11.94 as of 12:30 p.m. ET. The stock moved up sharply today after hedge fund, Baker Bros. Advisors, LLC, disclosed in a 13G filing a 13.99% stake in the company, roughly double the number of shares held by the fund as of the end of March 2013. Shares in VNDA have rallied approximately 120% since mid-May. Options players betting the price of the underlying has more room to run ahead of June expiration snapped up several hundred calls at the Jun $13 and $14 strikes on Tuesday morning. It looks like traders picked up around 500 calls at the $13 strike for an average premium of $0.65 each, and purchased some 300 lots at the higher $14 strike at an average premium…

Vanda-Pharm Receives a Dose of Covered Call Selling

Today’s tickers: VNDA, PFE, S, ZION, GDX, PBR, BSX, AIG & PEP

VNDA – Vanda Pharmaceuticals, Inc. – The biopharmaceutical company, which specializes in the development of drug candidates for central nervous system disorders, attracted covered call selling in afternoon trading. It looks like one bullish individual purchased shares of the underlying stock in combination with the sale of 10,000 calls at the September $12.5 strike for an average premium of $1.13 per contract. Vanda’s shares – at the time of the transaction – were trading at $10.80 apiece. Thus, the investor effectively paid a net $9.67 per share because of the financing provided by the sale of the call options. The covered call strategy positions the investor to accumulate maximum potential profits of 29.25% if Vanda’s shares rally above $12.50 by expiration in September. This is because the short call stance provides an exit strategy for the trader which dictates gains of 29.25% on the appreciation in value of the underlying shares from the purchase price of $9.67 up to the $12.50 price at which the shares will be called from him – should the calls land in-the-money – at expiration in seven months. Vanda is scheduled to reveal its fourth-quarter earnings report before the opening bell on Tuesday February 16, 2010.

PFE – Pfizer, Inc. – Shares of the global pharmaceutical company commenced the current session in the red, but rallied in afternoon trading, rising 0.85% to $17.89 with forty-five minutes remaining in the trading day. Long-term optimistic trading patterns emerged in the January 2012 contract where one investor initiated a bullish risk reversal on the stock. It looks like the trader sold 5,000 puts at the January 2012 $17.5 strike for a premium of $3.20 each in order to purchase 5,000 calls at the same strike for $2.60 apiece. The investor pockets a net credit of $0.60 per contract on the reversal play, which he keeps in his piggy bank if Pfizer’s shares trade above $17.50 through January 2012 expiration. Additional profits amass to the upside as shares increase above the stated strike price of $17.50.

S – Sprint Nextel Corp. – Massive strangles plays on the communications company today indicate investors expect shares of the underlying stock to remain range-bound through expiration in May. Sprint’s shares fell significantly yesterday afternoon and continued lower by 2% to $3.28 today following disappointing fourth-quarter sales, which fell 6.7% to…

Wild Volatility Continues As US Markets Attempt To Establish New Trend

Courtesy of Technical Traders

We’ve continued to attempt to warn investors of the risks ahead for the US and global markets by generating these research posts and by providing very clear data supporting our conclusions.  Throughout the entire months of May and June, we’ve seen various economic data points report very mixed results – and in some cases, surprise numbers as a result of the deep economic collapse related to the COVID-19 virus event.  This research post should help to clear things up going forward for most traders/investors.

As technical traders, we attempt to digest these economic data factors into technical and price analysis while determining where and what ...

Nasdaq 100 Relative Strength Testing 2000 Highs

The tech bubble didn’t end well. BUT it did tell us that the world was shifting into the technology age…

Since the Nasdaq 100 bottomed in 2002, the broader markets have turned over leadership to the technology sector.

This can be seen in today’s chart, highlighting the ratio of Nasdaq 100 to S&P 500 performance (on a “monthly” basis).

As you can see, the bars are in a rising bullish channel and have turned sharply higher since the 2018 stock market lows. This highlights the strength of the Nasdaq 100 and large-cap tech stocks.

Where is price going, is there strength or weakness in the chart?

Previous Post on the US Dollar : Where is the US Dollar trend headed ?

The question is always what will the future price action look like ?

This post will highlight the use of lines generated by angles. Not trend lines, as trend lines require two known points on a chart, where as angles require only one known point and a angle degree to draw a line. The question then becomes how is the angle degree determined.

There are two theories: ...

These Charts Show COVID 19 Is Spreading in the US and Will Kill the Economy

The COVID 19 pandemic is, predictably, worsening again in much of the US. Only the Northeast, and to a lesser extent some Midwestern states, have been consistently improving. And that trend could also reverse as those states fully reopen.

The problem in the US seems to be widespread public resistance to recommended practices of social distancing and mask wearing. In countries where these practices have been practi...
