Bulls Eye Valero Energy And Western Refining Options

Today’s tickers: VLO, WNR & TSN

VLO - Valero Energy Corp. – The largest independent refiner in the U.S. is the biggest gainer in the S&P 500 Index today, with shares in Valero Energy Corp. currently up more than 7.6% at $27.09 as of 12:10 p.m. in New York. Options activity on the San Antonio, Texas-based Company suggests traders are positioning for the price of the underlying to extend gains in the months ahead. April expiry calls attracted buyers today, with the $26 and $28 strike options seeing the most volume. Traders eyeing further upside moves in the stock purchased most of the 2,200 $28 calls in play for an average premium of $0.66 each. Call buyers profit at expiration next month in the event that Valero’s shares rally another 5.8% to surpass the average breakeven price of $28.66. But, it looks like one strategist trading VLO calls on Monday is already sitting on paper profits given the positive price action since the options were purchased. Call open interest in the April expiry is greatest at the $26 strike, with some 4,574 open positions. Most of these positions were initiated in a block of 3,700 call options, purchased on Monday afternoon for a premium of $1.05 per contract. These calls are now trading at $1.95 apiece as of 12:30 p.m. ET, indicating the value of the position has jumped roughly 85.0% in two days. Finally, the largest transaction in Valero options was established within the first 20 minutes of the opening bell. One trader appears to have sold June $24 strike puts to offset the cost of getting long the June $27 strike calls. The bullish position has the potential to become increasingly profitable for the strategist as shares climb north of the $27-level.

Bears Take a Bite Out of Las Vegas Sands Corp. Options

Today’s tickers: LVS, JPM, WNR, PFE, SLW, PCLN & XLK

LVS - Las Vegas Sands Corp. – Options strategists are initiating trades on the operator of casino resorts that suggest LVS shares could pull back further off recent highs. One big player wary of bearish movement in the price of the underlying shares purchased a large-volume ratio put spread in the January 2011 contract. Las Vegas Sands’ shares started the session in the red, but recovered this afternoon, and are currently up 1.65% at $52.84 as of 3:20 pm in New York. The put player purchased 20,000 contracts at the January 2011 $52.5 strike for a premium of $5.50 each, and sold 40,000 puts at the lower January 2011 $45 strike at a premium of $2.21 a-pop. Net premium paid to initiate the bearish spread amounts to $1.08 per contract. The investor responsible for the transaction is prepared to make money, or realize downside protection on a long position in the underlying shares, if LVS shares decline 2.7% from the current price of $52.84 to breach the effective breakeven point at $51.42 by January expiration. Maximum potential profits of $6.42 per contract are available to the trader if shares of the casino operator plunge 14.8% lower to settle at $45.00 at expiration. More than 216,000 option contracts have changed hands on LVS with 35 minutes remaining before the final bell. Options implied volatility on the stock is up 4.1% at 57.43%, the highest reading of IV since the end of July.

JPM - JPMorgan Chase & Co. – Shares of the financial services firm fell 0.85% to $40.59 late in the trading session, but earlier today one cautiously optimistic investor initiated a delta neutral hedge using longer-dated put options in the June 2011 contract. It looks like the investor picked up…

In a crisis, time is not on your side.

A crisis creates a vacuum, an informational void that gets filled one way or another. The longer a company or other organization at the center of the crisis waits to communicate, the more likely that void will be filled by critics.

That’s exactly what&...

US Home Price Growth Slowest Since 2012

Courtesy of ZeroHedge. View original post here.

Following disastrous starts and permits data, Case Shiller's home price index was expected to show growth continuing to slow. and it did, considerably worse than expected.

Case-Shiller's 20-City Composite grew at just 3.58% YoY in January (well below the 3.8% YoY expectation and December's 4.14% YoY print). This is the weakest annual growth since September 2012, decelerating for a 10th month in January as buyers held out for more affordable properties.

Weekly Market Recap Mar 24, 2019

Courtesy of Blain.

It was looking like another week of Federal Reserve Kool Aid and crushing bears .. until Friday.  On the back of bad economic news out Europe, the yield curve inverted on the 3 month vs 10 year bond – before you fall asleep to that news, it is a quite important indicator for the economy (not necessarily the stock market… yet).   More on that in a bit.  As you can see the action in the bond market Friday was quite severe so it will be interesting to see the move in the coming few days.

As for the Federal Reserve:

The Federal Reserve signaled no more increase in interest rates this year and just one in 2020, according to its new ‘dot plot,’ and the bank said it would...

Despacito - How to Make Money the Old-Fashioned Way - SLOWLY!

Are you ready to retire?

For most people, the purpose of investing is to build up enough wealth to allow you to retire.  In general, that's usually enough money to reliably generate a year's worth of your average income, each year into your retirement so that that, plus you Social Security, should be enough to pay your bills without having to draw down on your principle.

Unfortunately, as the last decade has shown us, we can't count on bonds to pay us more than 3% and the average return from the stock market over the past 20 years has been erratic - to say the least - with 4 negative years (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2008) and 14 positives, though mostly in the 10% range on the positives.  A string of losses like we had from 2000-02 could easily wipe out a decades worth of gains.

Still, the stock market has been better over the last 10 (7%) an...

It's Not Capitalism, it's Crony Capitalism

A good start from :

It's Not Capitalism, it's Crony Capitalism

Excerpt:

The threat to America is this: we have abandoned our core philosophy. Our first principle of this nation as a meritocracy, a free-market economy, where competition drives economic decision-making. In its place, we have allowed a malignancy to fester, a virulent pus-filled bastardized form of economics so corrosive in nature, so dangerously pestilent, that it presents an extinction-level threat to America – both the actual nation and the “idea” of America.

This all-encompassing mutant corruption saps men’s souls, crushes opportunities, and destroys economic mobility. Its a Smash & Grab system of ill-gotten re...
