Bearish Player Foresees Fall From W.R. Grace & Co.

Today’s tickers: GRA, BAC, XEC & UNT

GRA - W.R. Grace & Co. – Bearish activity in options covering the producer of specialty chemicals and materials today suggests shares in W.R. Grace & Co. may extend losses through the end of 2011, and into the New Year. GRA’s shares today trade 3.5% lower on the session at $34.26. The stock has fallen 34.7% since July 26, when shares were trading up at a more than 10-year high of $52.50. One options player expecting shares to continue to head south for the winter purchased a 530-lot Jan. 2012 $22.5/$32.5 put spread for a net premium of $2.95 per contract. The investor may be taking an outright bearish stance on the stock, or could be building up downside protection to hedge a long position in the underlying shares. The spread positions the trader to profit should GRA’s shares drop 13.75% from the current price of $34.26 to breach the effective breakeven point to the downside at $29.55 by January expiration. Maximum potential profits of $7.05 per contract pad the investor’s wallet if shares in W.R. Grace & Co. plunge 34.3% to trade below $22.50 at expiration in 2012. Options implied volatility on the stock is up 9.9% at 66.67% just before 12:20 pm ET. The company’s Senior VP and CFO, Hudson La Force, is scheduled to present at the 2011 KeyBanc Capital Markets Basic Materials & Packaging Conference in Boston tomorrow, as well as at the Credit Suisse Chemicals and Ag Science Conference in New York City on Thursday.

BAC - Bank of America Corp. – Shares in Bank of America Corp. rallied earlier in the session, perhaps signaling markets are eager to learn more about CEO Brian Moynihan’s Project New BAC. The stock turned negative in early-afternoon trade, but continues to outperform…

Option Player Cops a Strangle on ConocoPhillips

Today’s tickers: COP, POT, BAC, HPQ, AMZN, SLV, SPWRA, XEC, WFMI & C

COP – ConocoPhillips – A short strangle employed in the May contract on ConocoPhillips this afternoon suggests one investor expects shares of the underlying stock to remain range-bound through expiration. COP’s shares are down 1.25% to $49.29 with approximately thirty minutes remaining in the trading session. The trader ‘copped’ a strangle play by selling 3,000 puts at the May $46 strike for a premium of $1.77 apiece in combination with the sale of 3,000 calls at the May $52.5 strike for an average premium of $1.13 each. The investor responsible for the transaction pockets a gross premium of $2.90 per contract, and keeps the full amount of premium if ConocoPhillips’ shares trade within the confines of the strike prices described through expiration in May. The short position undertaken in both calls and puts leaves the trader vulnerable to potentially devastating losses should COP-shares swing dramatically in the next few months. Losses accumulate for the investor if shares rally above the upper breakeven price of $55.40, or if the price of the stock plummets through the lower breakeven point at $43.10, ahead of expiration day.

POT – Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Inc. – Fertilizer and feed products manufacturer, Potash Corp., attracted bullish options traders this afternoon. POT-shares are up 0.75% today to $114.01 just ahead of the closing bell, which contributes to the more than 14.50% rally in the price of the underlying stock since February 5, 2010, when shares stood at $99.36. Optimistic trading patterns appeared in the March contract where one investor established a ratio call spread. The transaction involved the purchase of roughly 4,500 calls at the March $125 strike for a premium of $1.77 apiece, marked against the sale of about 9,000 calls at the higher March $135 strike for an average premium of $0.52 each. The net cost of the ratio spread amounts to $0.73 per contract. Maximum potential profits of $9.27 per contract pad the investor’s wallet if Potash’s shares rally sharply by 18.50% over the current day’s price to reach $135.00 by March expiration. Shares must increase at least 10.25% before the investor breaks even on the spread at a share price of $125.73.

BAC – Bank of America Corp. – B of A investors have enjoyed an 8.75% rebound in the financial firm’s share price to $15.66 today, up from…

The world’s second most valuable cryptocurrency, ether, has been touching all-time highs in price ahead of a major upgrade of its underlying platform, ethereum. Ether is currently worth in aggregate just shy of US$500 billion (£363 billion). That’s still slightly less than half that of the biggest cryptocurrency, bitcoin.

Similar to yesterday's stellar 2Y auction, which many were worried would see a drop in demand only to be silenced by the burst in demand due to a furious scramble for physical paper on the back of a record front-end short (which we previewed earlier in the week), so a quick look at just how special the 5Y TSY had become ahead of today&...

Price and Volume Swing Analysis on Bitcoin and Silver

Courtesy of Read the Ticker

Many take guidance from news, pundits or advisors. Well sometimes the swings of price and volume are a better measure of what happens next.

The big boys do not accumulate or distribute in single 1 second trade, they build positions over weeks, months and years. They use price swings in the market to build or reduce positions, and you can see their intent by studying swings of price and volume and applying Tim Ord logic as written in his book called 'The Secret Science of Price and Volume: Techniques for Spotting Market Trends, Hot Sectors, and the Best Stocks'.

Tim Ord is a follower of Richard Wyckoff logic, his book has added to the studies of Richard Wyckoff, Richard Ney and Bob Evans.

Richard Wyckoff after years of...

Crude Oil Cleared For Blast Off On This Dual Breakout?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

Is Crude Oil about to blast off and hit much higher prices? It might be worth being aware of what could be taking place this month in this important commodity!

Crude Oil has created lower highs over the past 13-years, since peaking back in 2008, along line (1).

It created a “Double Top at (2), then it proceeded to decline more than 60% in four months.

The countertrend rally in Crude Oil has it attempting to break above its 13-year falling resistance as well as its double top at (3).

A successful breakout at (3) would suggest Crude Oil is about to mo...

Adaptive Fibonacci Price Modeling System Suggests Market Peak May Be Near

Courtesy of Technical Traders

Our Adaptive Fibonacci Price Modeling system is suggesting a moderate price peak may be already setting up in the NASDAQ while the Dow Jones, S&P500, and Transportation Index continue to rally beyond the projected Fibonacci Price Expansion Levels.  This indicates that capital may be shifting away from the already lofty Technology sector and into Basic Materials, Financials, Energy, Consumer Staples, Utilities, as well as other sectors.

This type of a structural market shift indicates a move away from speculation and towards Blue Chip returns. It suggests traders and investors are expecting the US consumer to come back strong (or at least hold up the market at...

Texas, Florida, Arizona, Georgia – The Branch COVIDIANS Are Still Burning Down the House

The numbers of new cases in some of the hardest hit COVID19 states have started to plateau, or even decline, over the past few days. A few pundits have noted it and concluded that it was a hopeful sign.

Is it real or is something else going on? Like a restriction in the numbers of tests, or simply the inability to test enough, or are some people simply giving up on getting tested? Because as we all know from our dear leader, the less testing, the less...
