Zale Options Active As Shares Pop After Earnings

Today’s tickers: ZLC, GCI & CHS

ZLC – Zale Corporation – Shares in jewelry retailer, Zale Corp., are soaring today, rallying as much as 23.6% during morning trading to touch a new four-year high of $11.08 after the company posted a narrower than expected fourth-quarter loss and its highest full year net income in six years ahead of the opening bell. Some options traders looking for the stock to rise after earnings initiated bullish trades on Zale two weeks prior to the report. Traders snapped up ZLC call options back on August 14th, for example, purchasing around 500 of the Sep $10 calls for an average premium of $0.86 apiece. The value of these calls has since increased substantially, with the asking premium up at $1.35 each as of 12:30 p.m. ET. Options traders also picked up the Sep $12.5 strike and the Nov $12.5 strike calls back on August 14th at premiums of $0.35 and $0.60 per contract, respectively. Today, it looks like traders are adding to bullish interest on the jeweler. More than 900 of the Nov $12.5 strike calls changed hands during morning trading versus open interest of 640 contracts, and it looks like most of the call options were purchased at a premium of $0.80 each. Buyers of the $12.5 strike calls stand ready to profit at November expiration should shares in ZLC rally 20% over today’s high of $11.08 to top the breakeven price of $13.30.

Traders Construct Call Spreads On Lennar

Today’s tickers: LEN, ZLC & M

LEN - Lennar Corporation – Shares in single-family home builder, Lennar Corp, slipped 2.4% on Wednesday morning to $31.39, the lowest level since August 21st of last year, but options changing hands on the stock today indicate one or more traders are positioning for shares to rebound somewhat during the next five weeks. It looks like options players are buying the Sep $32/$36 call spread, roughly 4,500 times as of the time of this writing, and paying an average net premium of $1.03 per spread. The bullish strategy makes money at expiration next month if shares in LEN rally 5.2% over today’s low of $31.39 to exceed the average breakeven point at $33.03, with maximum potential profits of $2.97 per contract available in the event of a more than 14.5% rally in the price of the underlying to $36.00. Shares in the homebuilder last traded above $36.00 in mid-July.

ZLC - Zale Corporation – Options in play on the operator of specialty retail jewelry stores today suggests some traders are looking for shares in Zale Corp to extend gains in the near term. Shares in ZLC, up nearly 170% since March, increased more than 10% today to touch a new four-year high of $10.29. The Aug and Sep $10 strike call options are the most actively traded by volume today, with roughly 800 of the Aug $10 calls purchased for an average premium of $0.18 each, and around 500 of the Sep $10 calls picked up at an average premium of $0.86 apiece. Traders long the Sep $10 calls may profit at expiration next month if shares in Zale rally 5.5% over today’s high of $10.29 to top the average breakeven price of $10.86. Zale Corp is scheduled to report fourth-quarter earnings ahead of the open…

Zale Corp. Calls And Puts Active As Shares Extend Gains

Today’s tickers: ZLC, KFT & VRX

ZLC - Zale Corp. – Shares in jewelry retailer, Zale Corp., rallied as much as 6.7% this morning to hit a fresh 52-week and intraday high of $5.89. The stock rose sharply last week as well after the company reported its seventh consecutive quarterly increase in sales and a narrower-than-expected fourth-quarter loss. The stock has nearly doubled in value since the beginning of August, and is up 185% since trading down to a 52-week low of $2.06 back in October. Options traders appear to be selling put options in the front month and picking up October expiration calls. It looks like 320 puts were sold for a premium of $0.10 each at the Sep. $5.0 strike today versus open interest of 544 contracts. Around 400 of the existing positions in the $5.0 strike put appear to have been purchased on Friday for a premium of $0.17 apiece. Put sellers may be ditching recently purchased downside protection on the name as the shares continue to climb, or could be selling the contracts outright in the expectation that the puts expire worthless later this month. Meanwhile, the purchase of around 170 of the Oct. $5.0 strike calls for an average premium of $0.84 per contract today indicates one or more strategists are positioning for shares to continue higher during the next seven weeks. Call buyers stand ready to profit at expiration next month should Zale Corp.’s shares rally 5% over the current price to exceed the breakeven point at $5.84. The stock is currently off its highs of the session, trading up 0.72% at $5.56 as of 12:45 p.m. in New York.

KFT - Kraft Foods, Inc. – The food products company popped up on our ‘most active by options volume’ market scanner this morning after a burst of trading activity in the September expiry calls. The trader or traders responsible for the bulk of the roughly 18,000 contracts in play…

Dow Jones Industrial Average “monthly” Chart

The Dow Industrials have spent the past 70 years in a wide rising price channel marked by each (1). And the past 25 years have seen prices test and pull back from the upper end of that channel.

The current bull market cycle has seen stocks rise sharply off the 2009 lows toward the upper end of that channel once more.

In fact, the Dow has been hovering near the topside of that price channel for several months.

But just as the Dow is kissing the top of this channel, it might be creating back-to-back “monthly” bearish ...

Yield Curve Patterns - What To Expect In 2020

Courtesy of Technical Traders

Quite a bit of information can be gleaned from the US Treasury Yield Curve charts.  There are two very interesting components that we identified from the Yield Curve charts below.  First, the bottom in late 2018 was a very important price bottom in the US markets.  That low presented a very deep bottom in the Yield Curve 30Y-10Y chart.  We believe this bottom set up a very dynamic shift in the capital markets that present the current risk factor throughout must of the rest of the world.  Second, this same December 2018 price bottom set up a very unique consolidation pattern on the 10Y-3Y Yield Curve chart.  This pattern has been seen before, in late 1997-1998 and late 2005-2008.

Oil cycle leads the stock cycle

Sure correlation is not causation, but this chart should be known by you.

We all know the world economy was waiting for a pin to prick the 'everything bubble', but no one had any idea of what the pin would look like.

Hence this is why the story of the black swan is so relevant.

There is massive debt behind the record high stock markets, there so much debt the political will required to allow central banks to print trillions to cover losses will likely effect elections. The point is printing money to cover billions is unlikely to upset anyone, however printing trillions will. In 2007 it was billions, in 202X it ...

Threats to democracy: oligarchy, feudalism, dictatorship

Fascinating and important to consider, since it is probably one of the reasons why the world aristocracy is pulling its all-out putsch right now… “Trillions will be inherited over the coming decades, further widening the wealth gap,” reports the Los Angeles Times. The beneficiaries aren’t all that young themselves. From 1989 to 2016, U.S. households inherited more than $8.5 trillion. Over that time, the average age of recipients rose by a decade to 51. More ...
