NY Times reports:

The good news for retailers in September is that sales were the best they have been all year. The bad news is that sales in major retailing categories are merely at 2005 levels.

On Thursday morning, some of the nation’s biggest retail chains posted September sales that were better than previous months, though that was largely because the stores had easier year-over-year comparisons. For the first time this year, retailers were comparing their sales to the abysmal numbers they began posting last fall, when the markets collapsed. Stores also benefited from a calendar shift that pushed Labor Day, as well as the usual back-to-school shopping rush, later in September.

Leading Indicators Point to Economic Rebound

Marketwatch reports:

An economic recovery may begin soon, and the recession is bottoming out, the Conference Board said Thursday. For its fourth consecutive monthly gain, the index of leading economic indicators rose in 0.6% in July, following an upwardly revised increase of 0.8% in June. Economists polled by MarketWatch were looking for a gain of 0.7% in July.

The interest rate spread was the largest positive contributor, while a reading on consumer expectations was the largest negative contributor. Overall, six of the 10 indicators were positive contributors, three were negative, and one was steady. The six-month growth rate for the overall index hit its highest level since mid-2004, according to the Conference Board.

Consumer Confidence at 11-Month High

Courtesy of Doug Short's Advisor Perspectives.

The latest Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index was released this morning based on data collected through August 18. The headline number of 101.1 was a solid increase from the final reading of 96.7 for July, a downward revision from 97.3. Today's number was substantially above the Investing.com consensus of 97.0. This is the highest reading of the past 11 months.

Here is an excerpt from the Conference Board press release.

“Consumer confidence improved in August to its highest level in nearly a year, after a marginal decline in July,” said Lynn...

Hedge Funds Bail on Copper as Goldman Sees ‘Supply Storm’ (Bloomberg)

Copper is stuck in a rut.

While other metals have shined in 2016, copper has struggled to gain traction and last week erased its gains for the year. Demand in China, the world’s biggest user, is slowing just as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. predicts a “supply storm” will hit the market and drag prices even lower.

Why Millennials Can't & Won't Grow The US Out Of Trouble

Courtesy of ZeroHedge. View original post here.

Submitted by Chris Hamilton via Econimica blog,

As the Millennials are making their way into adulthood, countless economists and nervous Boomers have pinned their hopes on this generation to kickstart the moribund US economy.  There are 3 basic sources of consumptive growth in a nation with twin budget and trade deficits... population growth, wage growth, and/or credit growth and population growth the greatest among these to drive greater demand.  So,...

Wake Up America - It's Time To Eliminate The 'Pusher'

Courtesy of Charles Hugh-Smith of OfTwoMinds

The fact that central banks provide welfare for the wealthy is now entering the mainstream. The fact that all central bank policies since 2008 have dramatically increased wealth and income inequality is now grudgingly being accepted as reality by mainstream economists and the financial media.

The central banks' PR facade of noble omniscience on behalf of the great unwashed masses has cracked wide open. Even The Wall Street Journal is publishing critiques of Federal Reserve policies that suggest the Fed has no idea how the U.S. economy actually works because their policies have failed to help the bottom 95%.

The grudging admission that central bank policies have enriched the rich while failing to benefit the bottom 95% is a breakthrough--the stone wall of denial...

Banks attempting to breakout of pennant pattern

Courtesy of Chris Kimble.

When one looks back over the past 10-years and compares the performance of Banks to the broad markets, banks look broken. We shared with members last week that since the highs in 2007, banks have under performed the S&P 500 by nearly 77%. Is this under performance about to end?

Epizyme - A Waiting Game

Reminder: Pharmboy is available to chat with Members, comments are found below each post.

Epizyme was founded in 2007, and trying to create drugs to treat patient's cancer by focusing on genetically-linked differences between normal and cancer cells. Cancer areas of focus include leukemia, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and breast cancer.  One of the Epizme cofounders, H. Robert Horvitz, won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2002 for "discoveries concerning genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death."

Before discussing the drug targets of Epizyme, understanding epigenetics is crucial to comprehend the company's goals.

Genetic components are the DNA sequences that are 'inherited.'  Some of these genes are stronger than others in their expression (e.g., eye color).  Yet, some genes turn on or off due to external factors (environmental), and it is und...

Help One Of Our Own PSW Members

"Hello PSW Members –

This is a non-trading topic, but I wanted to post it during trading hours so as many eyes can see it as possible.  Feel free to contact me directly at jennifersurovy@yahoo.com with any questions.

Last fall there was some discussion on the PSW board regarding setting up a YouCaring donation page for a PSW member, Shadowfax. Since then, we have been looking into ways to help get him additional medical services and to pay down his medical debts.  After following those leads, we are ready to move ahead with the YouCaring site. (Link is posted below.)  Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated; not only to help aid in his medical bill debt, but to also show what a great community this group is.
