Can a Fundamentalist Find Happiness with a Technical Overlay?

Can a Fundamentalist Find Happiness with a  Technical Overlay?

By Scott Brown, Sabrient

(Or . . . How to Increase Your Returns on Sabrient’s Top Performing Stocks!)

For many investors, it’s an either/or situation—either you believe that a company’s fundamentals drive the stock price or you think that technical overlay on a price chart is the only way to go.

At Sabrient, we’ve always come down on the side of fundamentals (quantified, of course, for our strategies and reports).

But we have an open mind . . . and we’re always looking for ways to help our customers improve their returns.

The Challenge

In the spirit of improving our returns, we issued a challenge this past year to several prominent technicians:  Can you take the outstanding 2009 results from our fundamentals-based rankings and improve the returns with a technical overlay?

Most couldn’t.  But two traders did succeed

·   Trader #1 took on 300 top-ranked and 300-bottom ranked stocks in the Sabrient VCU list and and used his technical overlay to generate a winning percentage of 67% and an average profit of +$249.84 (+2.50%) per trade!

·   Trader #2 took Sabrient’s Top Stocks of 2009 and used his trend reversal system to increase the 2009 returns from +41.3% to +101.0%!

We were impressed.

The Second Challenge

So we issued another challenge to the two winners:  Conduct a three-month forward test so we can see the results in real time.  In a forward test, the traders sent us their trades as they were made each day.

The real-time test began in January and ended mid-June 2010, and both traders had outstanding results.

And The Winners Are . . .John Ehlers and Luiz Alvim
