According to MetsBlog, New York Mets owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon Wilpon may not be liable for the reported $1 billion that Madoff trustee Irving Picard was seeking from the owners.
Instead, only the profits earned are being sought as part of the clawback, and this number is around $300 million.
The news was first reported by the New York Post.
Hedge fund honcho David Einhorn has been in talks with the Mets to purchase a minority stake in the team, but the deal has not closed as of yet. The still was supposed to close on June 30. Einhorn runs Greenlight Capital.
