The next two years will be a bonanza for satirists.
I have concluded, from my reading of history, that the greatest periods of change are best marked, are the most notable, by the almost remarkable inability, and sometimes tragic failure, of contemporary observers, including the participants, to understand them. They do not see their causes, and fail to measure their progress, at the time and place in which they happen. The big changes in the progress of life are writ large, in letters so immense that they are only decipherable by the best minds of the day, and those of the rest at a more considerable distance.
