The following are the M&A deals, rumors and chatter circulating on Wall Street for Tuesday January 22, 2013:

Report Microsoft Could Take Up to $3B Stake in Dell

The Rumor:
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is reportedly in talks to invest between $1 billion and $3 billion in the LBO of Dell (NASDAQ: DELL), according to a report from David Faber of CNBC. Silver Lake was reported last week to be raising up to $7 billion to be used for the buyout.

A Dell spokesperson declined comment on the report. A spokesperson for Microsoft was not available for comment.

Dell closed at $13.12 Tuesday, a gain of 2% on more than twice average volume.

Research in Motion Shares Rise on CEO Comments

The CEO Comments:
Shares of Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) surged 13% Tuesday, following comments by CEO Thorsten Hines to the German newspaper Die Welt on Sunday that he is open to all options, including licensing the Blackberry operating system and selling the company’s hardware business.

Research in Motion closed at $17.90 Tuesday on 2.5 times average volume, and traded over $18 after-hours.

AT&T to Acquire Wireless Spectrum and Assets from Atlantic Tele-Network for $780M in Cash

The Deal:
AT&T (NYSE: T) today announced that it has signed an agreement with Atlantic Tele-Network (NASDAQ: ATNI) to acquire the company’s U.S. retail wireless operations, operated under the Alltel brand, for $780 million in cash. Under terms of the agreement, AT&T will acquire wireless properties, including licenses, network assets, retail stores and approximately 585,000 subscribers.

Atlantic Tele-Network closed at $44.20 Tuesday, a gain of 12% on 8.5 times average volume.
