Hundreds of Climate Scientists Just Got Fired and It Could Be a Disaster

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) just took a massive hit—about 800 employees were abruptly fired, and more layoffs could be coming. According to CNN, the move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to shrink government agencies, including those focused on climate science and disaster forecasting. The cuts impact nearly every division of NOAA, which plays a crucial role in tracking extreme weather, monitoring climate change, and protecting marine life.
The National Weather Service (NWS) was particularly affected, with between 350 and 375 probationary employees—those with less than a year of service—losing their jobs. Even some top researchers in hurricane modeling, tsunami warnings, and artificial intelligence-driven climate forecasting were terminated.
