Citi-Bull Sheds Just Under a Quarter Million Put Options

Today’s tickers: C, ERTS, ATVI, DNDN, HIG, DD, RCL, SFD & AMR

C – Citigroup, Inc. – One investor established a mammoth bullish stance on Citigroup in the first 20 minutes of the current trading session. Citigroup’s shares at the time of the transaction were trading at approximately $4.05, but have since slipped lower and are down 0.50% to $4.03 as of 2:45 pm (ET). It looks like the Citi-bull sold 240,000 put options outright at the April $4.0 strike to take in a premium of $0.16 per contract. Premium received on the sale, which represents maximum potential profits, amounts to $3.840 million to the investor if Citigroup’s shares trade above $4.00 through expiration day. The short stance in put options implies the investor is willing to have 24 million shares of the underlying stock put to him at an effective price of $3.84 each should the puts land in-the-money at expiration.

ERTS – Electronic Arts, Inc. – An enormous bullish debit call spread purchased on video game software publishing company, Electronic Arts, Inc., indicates one big options investor is expecting shares of the underlying stock to rally sharply ahead of expiration in January 2011. Electronic Arts’ shares are up 2.40% this afternoon to $18.57. The options player purchased approximately 61,000 call options at the January 2011 $25 strike for an average premium of $0.60 apiece, and sold roughly the same number of contracts at the higher January 2011 $30 strike for $0.14 each. The net cost of the spread amounts to $0.46 per contract, thus yielding maximum potential profits of $4.54 apiece if shares surge through $30.00 by expiration day next year. ERTS shares must increase at least 37% from the current price in order for the investor to break even on the trade at $25.46. Maximum profit acquisition of $4.54 per contract, or total gains of $27.694 million, requires a 61.55% rally in shares to $30.00 by January expiration. The 122,000 call options utilized in the transaction represent a staggering 44.58% of total existing open interest on the stock of 273,639 contracts.

ATVI – Activision Blizzard, Inc. – The producer of online, console and hand-held games received a vote of confidence by one large options player anticipating bullish movement in the price of its shares through expiration in January 2011. Activision’s shares rallied 2.12% to $12.05 in the first half of the trading session. The optimistic investor established…

Jobless Thursday – Max Keiser Bashes Banks

This is a good one!

I've never embedded a video before but you just have to see this so I'm learning a new trick.  Keiser puts out some gems like:

  • Goldmans Sachs, JPM, CitigGroup are all engaged in accounting fraud
  • The American peasants have got to be the stupidest people in the World today.  They don't mind becoming peasants, they don't mind living like peasants and, if that's the case, then we should do nothing to stop them from sliding into a peasant class.
  • Banks are just stealing money outright from the World economy.
  • There is no liquidity being provided by the banks, they are hoarding their cash and non-disclosing their losses.
  • In part 2 of the video: "The reality is people are dying due to the actions of JPM, GS and the Wall Street Jihadists"

Max compares Wall Street bankers to suicide bombers and predicts it is only a matter of time before they are back before Congress with a gun to their heads threatening the destruction of America if they don't get another bailout.  I'm glad he said it an not me because I get enough hate mail from GS fans…  Keiser makes the point that, while the American people may put up with this nonsense, the leaders of Europe and Russia and China look at what's going on here and have no faith in our currency.

I think this is great as it saves me from ranting and raving this morning.  I had my fill in yesterday's post when I said the only way to play this market to the bull side is to suspend all logical disbelief.  Fortunately, we had a huge, ridiculous run-up in the morning that gave us tremendous shorting opportunties.  Even as the market was rising, in my 9:56 Alert to Members, we targeted the DIA $99 puts at $1.30 and those finished the day at $2 (up 54%) and in my 10:32 Alert to Members we sold the FAZ $19 puts for $1.80 and those finished the day at $1.20 (up 33%).  We also took short plays as the market topped on MS, IYT, CS, ICE, V, GMCR, DD, EBAY and even our beloved AAPL as the market was just too ridiculous looking to be bullish. …

Double Top Testing Tuesday – 8,900 or Bust!

Whee, what fun!

We got the S&P stick that kept us well and truly above 946 into the close.  If we hold it for a couple of days, we won't be calling it a "stick save," we'll be saying this was the day that 946 turned from resistance to support – a good chartist needs to travel to the future, look back at today's charts and think about them in context of the follow-through move they expect.  Looking further back in time, however, what we have so far is a double top on the S&P at the upper end of our primary range on very low volume.  956.23 was our June high and that still needs to be both taken out and held (preferably at decent volume) in order for us to don our rally caps for the next leg up

I'm encouraged this morning that we may be able to do it though – CAT had great numbers, beating estimates of .22 by .38 per share, that's very impressive for what was a $35 stock yesterday.  Fellow Dow component KO had a nice beat as well as did DD, MRK and UTX,  That's 5 Dow beats in one day and yesterday we finished at 8,848 which is why I'm saying 8,900 or bust today.  If we can't add 52 little points on these earnings, then surely the rally into these earnings was overdone.  If, on the other hand, we can hold 8,900 and build from there – then perhaps we are ready to move 8,650 to the bottom of our range and look to make a 10% move over that to 9,500, a mere 32% off the highs.

I'm excited because it's almost time to pull out a brand new Big Chart with all new targets – if only we can prove this move is real.   Let's not get too ahead of ourselves but I was already very pleased with last night's eanings when all 20 reporting companies beat estimates with PKG and TXN raising guidance of all things!  This morning we also have both ICSC and Redbook Retail Sales reports and Bernanke gives the old Humphrey-Hawkins address to Congress against a very pretty market background which will hopefully overshadow TARP Czar Neil Barofsky, who will be reporting to Congress under the shadow of his "leaked" report that shows that the government's POTENTIAL exposure under TARP is

DAX Index Hits Two 18-Year Support Lines, Creates Large Bullish Reversal

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

Has the DAX index from Germany experience a large decline of late? Yes, it has!

Has the decline broken long-term rising support lines? Not so far!

This chart looks at the DAX index on a monthly basis over the past 25-years. Over the past 6-years, it has traded sideways inside of the blue rectangle at (1).

The decline this year saw the DAX hit two 18-year rising support lines at (2) last month, where a large bullish reversal took place.

Until broken, important support remains in play at (2), which is bullish for this key index....

Anyone holding bitcoin would have watched the market with alarm in recent weeks. Despite recovering to the mid-US$6,000s at the time of writin...
