Crowd Forms Around CoreLogic Call Options

Today’s tickers: CLGX, XLY, JDSU & FNF

CLGX - CoreLogic, Inc. – Options volume on the provider of business support services has ballooned to more than twice the number of existing positions on the stock, with calls changing hands more than 20 times for each single put option in action. The spike in demand for calls is no surprise given the 28.6% rally in CoreLogic’s shares to $11.30 today, on news the company hired Greenhill & Co. to help it consider various options that could include putting itself up for sale. Increased activity in CLGX options sent implied volatility on the stock screaming higher to 66.48%, a 79.3% gain over yesterday’s close. Much of the nearer-term positioning in CoreLogic call options today appears to be the work of bullish investors expecting the price of the underlying to continue higher. But, open interest patterns in the calls suggest not all players acted after news of Greenhill & Co.’s hire hit the stands. It looks like some traders picked up 445 of the October $10 and 550 of the Jan. 2012 $10 strike call options yesterday for an average premium of $0.14 and $0.40 apiece, respectively. The values of these positions no doubt exploded overnight, with buyers of these options now paying around $1.53 and $1.64 for the right to purchase shares in CLGX at $10.00 come expiration day in October and January 2012. Although overnight success stories such as these tend to raise an eyebrow or two, there is no evidence as yet to indicate call buyers knew what was coming to them today.

Meanwhile, new bullish stances were initiated on the stock across all available expiries. Call buyers took to the $10 and $12.5 strikes expiring in September and October to presumably get in on the way up. Sizable…

Moronic Monday – Still No Deal?

This is amazing, isn’t it?

Our "leaders" still can’t work out a debt deal with just 7 days left until the Government shuts down (and we’re already at the end of our bonus time as Treasury has been juggling the books for three months just to allow us this much).  I wrote extensively about this over the weekend so we can move on – just as we moved on in Chat yesterday evening when my 6:09 pm Alert to Members was to go long on the Dow Futures (/YM) over the 12,500 line (now 12,543, up $215 per contract), Russell (/TF) at 830 (now 831.80, up $180 per contract) and, of course, shorting oil (/CL) below 99.50 (now $98.97, up $530 per contact) so the winner of the morning is oil!  Congrats to all the players with a lovely start to our week!

On the whole, we were just protecting our bearish bets as I remained very grumpy into the weekend on Friday.  Those of you who followed our suggestions from Friday’s post were no doubt pleased because, at the time, we were short the Dow Futures at 12,720 and the Russell Futures at 842.60 with $1,100 and 1,260 moves from there to Sunday night’s flip-flop respectively.

We also picked the S&P (/ES) short at 1,346 (now 1,331) and the only one that isn’t working is the Nasdaq (/NQ) – back at the same 2,415 we had in Friday Morning’s Futures.  Well, it’s not the only one – gold went over our $1,605 shorting target this morning, after giving us a quick gain on Friday.  This is not good for our GLL August $22 calls (.40 on Friday) or our ZSL Sept $11/15 bull call spread at $2, offset with the sale of SLW Sept $44 puts for $1.20 for net .80 on the $4 spread but a nice re-entry opportunity today – if you are still a believer.

We’re more agnostic now.  We were bearish into the weekend expecting pretty much what happened – NOTHING, and now we’re waiting to see what actually happens and how the markets react.  The Shanghai Composite freaked out this morning and dropped 3% – only saved by the closing bell as the Government moved to shut down counterfeit Apple Stores and bullet trains went off the rails.  The Hang Seng…

CVS, Walgreens Shares Slide As Amazon Files International Trademarks For Pharmacy Business

Courtesy of ZeroHedge

Amazon has just taken another step in its assault of the pharmacy industry. Since the company acquired PillPack, a disruptive online pharmacy, back in 2018, pharmacy mainstays like CVS and Walgreens Boots Alliance have been rattled by the e-commerce and cloud-computing giant's move into their territory. Their shares dipped on Tuesday as CNBC reported that Amazon had just filed trademarks for its 'Amazon Pharmacy' brand in several foreign markets, including Australia, Canada and the UK.

Amazon unveiled its plans to rebrand PillPack as 'Amazon Pharmacy' late last year, signaling to the market that it intended to pursue its pharmacy aims despite a high bar set by regulators in the US.

The problem with selling pharmaceutic...

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

Could the Hang Seng Index be “Double Topping” at its 2007 highs? Possible, yet not proven!

The Hang Seng Index attempted to break above its 2007 highs at (1), only to see a key reversal pattern take place the following month.

After the reversal pattern, the index has created a series of lower highs, just below falling resistance.

So far this month, the index is attempting to break above falling resistance, where it could be created a bearish reversal monthly pattern at (2).

What would it take to prove that a double top was i...

SP500 Kitchin Cycle Review

Courtesy of Read the Ticker

The biggest known news date in the next 18 months is the US Election. The biggest unknown news date is when the US believes it is in a economic recession.

The Kitchin Cycle is still working.

We must conclude the major 900 period low is now in, and we are now in a up swing, which may top out ate 2020 or late 2021. Any future top out may only generate a 10% to 20% correction, of course this can be deemed very mild. This is expected, but the expected does always play out.

Rolling the dice to get '7' does not always work. Post US elections seasonal's aligned with a poor start of the decade seasonal trends, add on high global recession risk, add on a stock market slump tends to occur in the years ending 9,1,2,3,4 (like 1973, 1...
