Will We Hold It Wednesday – Global Correction Edition

You call this a correction?

The Nasdaq is down 4%, Russell is down 5%, the Hang Seng is down 6% and the FTSE is down 3.6% but barely a pause from the rest of our Global Indexes.  The problem is, it's been so long since we had a proper pullback that people think a tiny little correction is the end of the World.  Even in the good old days, before high-frequency trading made a joke out of the market – investors didn't get too upset about a 5% pullback

That may be the problem as well.  The reason the market has marched off to record highs is BECAUSE investors have been led to believe that it's better than bonds, better than cash, even – to have your money in the stock market.  We certainly seem to have convinced a lot of Boards of Directors that the best thing to do with their company's money is to buy back their own stock or the stock of their competitors – no matter how ridiculous the price.

$533Bn of hard-earned Corporate Profits were spent buying just the S&P 500, by the S&P 500, in the past 12 months alone.  That's 20% more than all of 2013 ($420Bn) and 30% over the 5-year average and that DOESN'T include M&A activity – also at a record pace.   While this has been going on, insiders have been SELLING their company stock at a record pace – Interesting…

So the company uses it's profits, not to invest in it's own future but to prop up it's own stock price – making earnings seem better because you are dividing the profits by a lower number of shares than there were last year.  This inflates the stock price and the insiders get out and that's when you buy – is that about right?

What a friggin' scam - I can't believe you fell for that!  Seriously, that is such an obvious fraud that you would think people would run screaming away from equities.  The problem is, there's nowhere to run to, is there.  Your cash is being devalued, bonds don't keep up with inflation, real estate is still very…

How To Profit In A Market Correction

How To Profit In A Market Correction

Courtesy of David at All About Trends

Last week’s action should not come as any surprise to those who follow us closely. Since the beginning of the month we talked about being overbought, we talked about not chasing the market or stocks, we talked about not reacting when the drive by media was saying WOW the market is up it’s time to buy. We talked about follow the leaders and how for weeks leading stocks were selling off and why that was important as it always forecasts how the rest of the market isn’t far behind. We talked about listening to the market and what it was saying. Now you know why we say what we say all the time. And sure enough here we are!

We even showed you how to use short term support and resistance levels and how they act real time.

Now you know why we hit and ran early in the month and went to cash. We’re up for the month nicely while the market hasn’t gone anywhere since the beginning of October.

The chart above shows that of being in the zone for a potential turn higher in the coming days. It’s the quality of that bounce when we get one that we are most concerned with.

You can see the lower blue line support level is very near. It would not surprise us to see us open down there on Monday. Why? Because when you go into a weekend like we have, emotional money has the tendency to listen to fear without doing their homework like we are so they hit the sell button on their online accounts to sell at the open at the market. And you know what? All those orders are sitting on the books for when the market makers and specialists come in Monday morning.

They know there are sell orders on the books from the weekend so do you really think they are going to be nice to that emotional money and let them out? Chances are not. This is what’s called trap door opens. It’s where they gap down and fill all that emotional money then run the market without them. We’re not saying this is the way it’s going to be, we’re just saying we’ve seen it before and don’t be surprised if the open…

You will often hear that there is something wrong or artificial about the current secular bull market because of the relatively high concentration of the FAAMG stocks – Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google. Three of the five have attained trillion dollar market caps and the other two are getting cl...

When it comes to investor positioning and flows, we have been quite clear over the past two weeks: with stocks hitting all time highs on a daily basis, we first reported on Jan 11 that "Institutions, Retail And Algos Are Now All-In" and then again one week later, "Never Before Seen Market Complacency, As Everyone Goes Even More "All In"."

Confirming one part of this, overnight Goldman showed that equity net future positioning of hedge funds has hit an all time high, meaning there is little marginal space l...

Junior Gold Miners Setting Up For Another Rally

Courtesy of Technical Traders

Our recent research suggests the US stock market may be entering a period of volatility that may include a broad market rotation/reversion event.  We believe this volatility event could begin to happen anytime over the next 10 to 30+ days.  The rally in the US stock market ending 2019 and carrying into 2020 appears to be setting up a “rally to a peak” type of price pattern. Please take a minute to review the following articles we’ve posted recently about this topic and how it relates to opportunities in
Metals/Miners.

Benzinga Pro's Stocks To Watch For Wednesday

  • Netflix (NFLX) - Shares were up just 0.4% following a Q4 beat and mixed Q1 guidance. The company said it expects Q1 global streaming paid net subscriber additions of about 7 million subs.
  • Tesla (TSLA) - With Tesla shares up 5% in pre-market activity, the company's market cap, at market open, will hit $100 billion for the first time in its history. While a Neutral-rated Wedbush analyst, Daniel Ives, raised his price target on the stock from $370 to $550 this morning, this news item isn't necessarily driving the stock Wednesday as this analyst was mostly playing catch up after not having updated his price targ...

Hang Seng Index Double Topping At 2007 Highs?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble

Could the Hang Seng Index be “Double Topping” at its 2007 highs? Possible, yet not proven!

The Hang Seng Index attempted to break above its 2007 highs at (1), only to see a key reversal pattern take place the following month.

After the reversal pattern, the index has created a series of lower highs, just below falling resistance.

So far this month, the index is attempting to break above falling resistance, where it could be created a bearish reversal monthly pattern at (2).

What would it take to prove that a double top was i...

The repo market problem isn’t the problem. It’s a sideshow, a diversion, and a joke. It’s a symptom of the problem.

Today, I got a note from Liquidity Trader subscriber David, a professional investor, and it got me to thinking. Here’s what David wrote:
