Arnie Gundersen conducts a field demonstration simulating the impact of Fukushima’s intense heat upon Zircaloy [zirconium alloy] fuel rods. Arnie shows how intense heat will weaken Zircaloy changing it from a sturdy metal to a brittle oxide that is easily shattered.
