D.A. Davidson downgraded RF Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD) from Buy to Neutral and maintained a $16 price target.

Analyst Thomas Diffely explained that he has moved to the “sidelines after a 200 percent move.”

“While our bullish model and positive outlook on the pending merger with TriQuint Semiconductor remains intact, we believe the robust stock outperformance largely reflects the more positive margin and synergy targets that management outlined at the recent Qorvo analyst meeting,” according to Diffely.

The analyst note added that “with shares trading at a reasonable 12x 2016 EPS and only modest upside to our 12-18 month price target, we believe the risk-reward profile is now balanced.”

Diffely concluded that the basis for the price target is the "fact that RFMD shareholders will receive one share of Qorvo for every RFMD share owned, and the initial Qorvo share count will be 600 million (prior to a planned 4:1 reverse split), the $5.00 of earnings power projected from the new target model equates to $1.25 in earnings power for current RFMD shareholders in 2016.”

RF Micro Devices recently traded at $14.80, down 4.5 percent.

Deutsche Bank Downgrades Ford Motor Company To Hold

Making Money With Charles Payne: 12/8/14 (Fox Business)

Deutsche Bank’s Rod Lache on Monday downgraded shares of Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) to Hold from Buy with a $16 price target.

Shares of Ford were trading 7 percent away from Lache’s $16 price target, implying a more cautious approach towards investing in shares of Ford (and the overall U.S. auto sector) as the sector faces “significant prospective challenges.”

“We believe that U.S. vehicle affordability is reaching an inflection point,” Lache wrote. “The prospective regulatory cost burdens facing U.S. Automakers are unprecedented.”

The analyst notes that Ford’s new F-150 truck is one of the “most prominent” examples of how vehicles are reaching an inflection point. The analyst questions if consumers will pay higher costs for the F-150′s “advanced but costly powertrain, light-weighting and safety technologies” even when the price of gas hovers between $2 to $3 per gallon.

Lache concludes by stating that “at the very least” a combination of rising new car prices, falling used car prices, a rising rates environment and a strong U.S. dollar vs. the Japanese Yen will likely “perpetuate questions” regarding the implications for ownership cycles, industry mix, pricing and U.S. automakers’ competitive positioning.

Shares of Ford were down about 0.3 percent in the premarket at $14.95.

According to a recent report, Morgan Stanley analysts believe 2015 and 2016 could be big years for U.S. rail companies Union Pacific Corp (NYSE: UNP), CSX Corp (NYSE: CSX), and Norfolk Southern Corp (NYSE: NSC).

Analysts see tight capacity, increasing truck pricing, and inflation as driving forces behind a projected doubling of rail core price growth in 2015.

Trucking Leads The Way

While analysts have no direct indicator of rail capacity utilization, analysts turn to trucking numbers as an indication of what to expect in rails. A recent survey of shippers reveals that industry insiders believe that trucking capacity is now above previous peak capacities reached in 2004 and 2006.

Analysts predict similar capacity tightening for the rail companies as well.

Pricing Power

Analysts believe that demand growth will outpace capacity growth for rails in 2015, and this environment will lead to increased pricing power. If trucking prices rise 4 to 5 percent, rail prices are expected to increase at least that much as well.

A large utility company recently told Morgan Stanley that one rail service provider is already asking for a 5 to 10 percent pricing increase in 2015.

Rising Margins

Morgan Stanley analyst William J. Greene makes a strong case for a big boost in incremental margins at the rail companies in 2015.

“If we assume ~3% total carload growth, with 50% incremental margins on volumes, mid-single-digit core pricing gains, 2.5% inflation, and then add back productivity headwinds experienced in 2014 as well as incremental productivity gains for 2015, we think incremental margins of 70-90% are achievable,” he wrote.

Analysts expect the beneficial environment for rail companies to continue into 2016.

Some Big Banks Have Wildly Different Risk Exposure Than Others
#PreMarket Primer: Thursday, December 11: Investors Flock To Safer Bets
Making Money With Charles Payne: 12/9/14 (Fox Business)

A recent Morgan Stanley report offered some insight into what analysts believe Citigroup Inc (NYSE: C)'s capital return plan will be in 2015.

After an embarrassing rejection of its plan by the Federal Reserve in 2014, the analysis indicates Citigroup could be well-positioned to institute aggressive share buyback and dividend programs next year.

Analysts see four key reasons Citigroup should be free to return money to shareholders in 2015.

1. Elimination of subprime lending business: Citigroup plans to get rid of OneMain, its subprime lending unit.

Regardless of whether Citi accomplishes this goal via IPO or an outright sale of the business, analysts estimate it will free up at least $3.2 billion of capital that could potentially be included in Citi’s capital return plan.

2. Better regulatory positioning: Citigroup’s reputation took a hit after its 2014 capital return plan was rejected, and analysts believe the company will not make the same mistake twice. Citi has been closely engaged with regulators in recent months.

Analysts see Citi’s recent announcement to exit 12 international positions (in addition to recent exits from troubled Greece and Spain) as partially motivated by the 2014 CCAR rejection.

3. Strong capital ratios: Citi’s Common Tier 1 capital ratio of 10.7 percent outshines both Bank of America Corp’s (NYSE: BAC) 9.6 percent and JPMorgan Chase and Co’s (NYSE: JPM) 10.1 percent.

4. Earnings growth: Analysts predict that additional expense cuts will boost Citi’s bottom line, and they project these cuts to result in about $5 billion in deferred tax asset utilization.

In last week’s recap we asked:  “Has the Fed solved all the market’s problems in 1 speech?”

Thus far the market says yes!  As Guns n Roses preached – all we need is a little “patience”.  Four up days followed by a nominal down day Friday had the market following it’s normal pattern the past nearly 30 years – jumping whenever the Federal Reserve hints (or essentially says outright) it is here for the markets.   And in case you missed it the prior Friday, Chairman Powell came back out Thursday to reiterate the news – so…so… so… patient!

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell reinforced that message Thursday during a discussion at the Economic Club of Washington where he said that the central bank will be “fle...
