Best Funds for IRAs

0:03the morning’s time Jeremy Glaser its tax relief week here on Wednesday I dot com

0:07and here to talk to fund investors about how they should think about filling the

0:11IRS is Christian bands are director personal finance

0:13christine thanks Jeremy Jeremy it’s great to be here so first off before we

0:17get into some specific find ideas that you have to think about us elected

0:22investments that go into a tax-advantaged accounts like an IRA the

0:25key thing you need to think about is your time horizon for that money so for

0:29younger people who are accumulating assets for retirement and don’t expect

0:34that they will tap that money for another 20 years thirty years or more

0:38by all means they’d want to have their ire a predominantly invested in stocks

0:43for people who are using their IRAs to take advantage of that tax sheltered

0:48rapper and maybe they’re getting a little bit closer to retirement so they

0:51want to begin accumulating safer types of assets I i raised are an ideal

0:57receptacle for bonds because that bond income is taxed at ordinary income rates

1:02so your taxable accounts tend to be a bad place to hold taxable bonds higher a

1:09shelter you from those year-to-year income distribution so they’re a good

1:14place to house tax that house income producing assets finally I would say

1:20that investors who have already well diversified portfolios and are using

1:24their IRA contributions to kind of diversify the already well diversified

1:30equity and bond piece of their portfolios they might think about using

1:34their IRAs to use some diversifying asset types that are also tax

1:39inefficient so here I am thinking of categories like real estate perhaps

1:44commodities areas that diversify their plain vanilla stock for stock bond

1:49portfolio ok let’s start with investors who do have that long time horizon what

1:53are some ideas of what they can put in there i read well one thing I would say

1:57is that if you have an equity philosophy that you believe in and that you’re

2:00operating with there’s no reason to depart from it so maybe you’re an

2:04individual equity investor or maybe you’re someone who really believes in

2:08the merits of indexing all those are both pretty tax efficient strategies but

2:13there’s no reason to go out of your way to beat

2:15tax inefficient simply because you’re investing in an IRA so if you have one

2:19of those philosophies and you believe in it by all means employers within your

2:23IRA but one thing I would say is that for investors who do want to take

2:27maximum advantage of the tax sheltering that you get with an IRA you might want

2:33to think about holding dividend-paying stocks and the reason is that you get

2:37those dividends if you hold them in a text book county received them and

2:40you’ll owe taxes on them in the year in which you received them if you hold them

2:45inside of an IRA you can reinvest those dividends and the only tax you’ll pay if

2:51you are holding a traditional IRA is when you begin pulling money out of the

2:55account so that’s one reason why I say if you like dividend-paying equities

2:59think about holding them inside of a tax-sheltered account so here I have a

3:04couple of ideas one actively managed fund that our team likes quite a bit

3:08that has a dividend yield that is high in absolute terms is Vanguard equity

3:13income it’s a fun that is about two-thirds managed by the team at

3:17Wellington investment management and the other third is managed by vanguards

3:22in-house quantitative equity group it’s historically been a very strong

3:28performing fund in part because it has very low costs and a lot of the yield

3:33that it kicks off flows through to shareholders because the lower expenses

3:38are being deducted from Matt yield so that’s a good actively-managed option

3:43for people who are thinking about some sort of an index product and certainly

3:47indexing can be a good way to invest in dividend-paying equities to I might look

3:52at Vanguard high dividend yield this is available either as a traditional index

3:57mutual fund or as an exchange-traded fund or you might consider schwab us’

4:02dividend equity both are really low-cost products that offer well diversified

4:08exposure to the dividend-paying equities space let’s turn to investors you maybe

4:14have a shorter time rising are looking to buy bonds TransCore bond funds and

4:18their iraq what are some options there well here I would think about some of

4:22the intermediate-term bond funds that our team likes quite a bit

4:26so these would be appropriate for people who are maybe getting into their fifties

4:30and sixties and starting to take some risk out of their portfolios as their

4:35retirements approach so here among our favorites would be dodging Cox income

4:41fidelity total bond MapQuest total return bond Vanguard total bond market

4:46index just those big core funds that provide fairly well diversified exposure

4:52the Vanguard fund is obviously a total bond market index fund the other

4:57products are actively managed they all feature again nice low costs and bonds

5:02in general

5:03take good advantage of that tax sheltered wrapper that you get with an

5:06IRA if you own taxable bonds in a taxable account you’ll pay ordinary

5:11income on each of those income ordinary income tax on each of those income

5:16distributions if you are sheltering those income distributions within an IRA

5:21you won’t put pay taxes on the money year-to-year basis to have core bond

5:26exposure would it make sense to maybe look at some satellite holdings in an

5:30IRA absolutely because when I look at the 401k plan universe for example one

5:35thing that you often see is that 401k plan menus usually do a good job about

5:39giving you that good for core fixed income exposure so they’ve got that

5:43Vanguard total bond marketed indexer they’ve got PIMCO total return on the

5:48menu so usually covered if you’re building up your portfolio primarily in

5:52your 401k so investors may want to look to their IRA to be that sort of

5:56satellite fixed-income holding a couple of ideas come to mind for that base one

6:03would be Treasury inflation protected securities they tend to be a good

6:07security type 2 house within some sort of a tax sheltered account because you

6:12pay taxes on their income distributions just as you would with any other bond

6:16fund and you also pay taxes on the adjustments that you get to your

6:20principal value when inflation goes up so it’s generally a good idea to think

6:25about housing them just like any other bond fund type within a tax-sheltered

6:30account a couple of funds that we like in this

6:33space would be a PIMCO real return and I also like vanguards inflation-protected

6:39funds both Vanguard inflation-protected securities as well as the relatively

6:44newer Vanguard short-term inflation protected securities the Vanguard funds

6:49are low cost and generally kind of vanilla options in that tip space but I

6:55think that tips in general are are good thing to think about when you’re

6:58thinking about your IRA beyond taps are there any non core fixed income types of

7:01black men try right definitely so for the person who has that core peace

7:06filled out another area that you might consider for an IRA would
